We flew through Melbourne three times on our latest trip to Down Under…read more International arrivals required a little bit of a hike to get to immigration. We were able to use the egate to enter so no more passport stamp. We grabbed our luggage and proceeded through customs. That was the much longer and slower line. Definitely better to declare conservatively (per announcement on our flight) and explain all Yes answers to the agent. To connect to our domestic leg to Hobart we followed the signs to T3 and did the self serve baggage drop like everyone else. Security was next and water was allowed to be carried through. To connect to our international flight to Queenstown in T2 we had to queue to check bags and get our boarding pass since they had to verify our NZETA and return flight. Security screening was quick but a little slower at the egate customs as people fumbled around for their passport (required first step). Some people had to be rerouted to the in person agent when flagged by the egate. After all this, at least there was a good selection of restaurants and shops in each terminal we visited. Prices were roughly just a couple AUD higher than outside the airport so it felt reasonable. Overall good signage and well connected terminals.

Our recent MEL experience included 2 domestic flights, one coming in from Hobart on Virgin…read moreAustralia, and the other flying up to Alice Springs on Quantas. The highlight of these experiences was running into members of Allegaeon at baggage claim. They are an American death metal band from Fort Collins, on tour here I guess. I'm not into that type of music, but one of my step-sons has made some cool art related to that genre. I can't speak for the International side of MEL, but I found Domestic to be "Easy Out/Easy In", even though this is a busy place. It also helps when your tour guide is facilitating baggage check-in and transportation. Security was on our own, but by this time, Gayle and I knew the Australian Rules (everything out of your pocket, plus belt). Signage was good, so there were no problems finding baggage claim or our gate.

Where to begin? I regret booking three flights in advance. Otherwise, Quantas exceeds on all…read morecounts. Jetstar is an economy airline. I pack light, but they make everything difficult. Checking baggage weight at the boarding gate and very old tight seats. Worse is some of the staff like the heavy set woman and Cairns. She immediately had an attitude when I asked where I was sitting. Even though I purchased extra weight for carry on, it registered as check-in. When I asked if I could just carry on, she flatly refused and waited to charge me extra even though I was only carrying 16 KG when I I paid online for 25kg. Avoid the hassle unless you are small and carrying under 7 kg. Otherwise, the price will be comparable with Qantas even though they charge more upfront. They don't have all the limitations that Jetstar imposes. Avoid avoid and abort.

Duplicate review from 10/27/23…read more First of all, it was a whole experience getting here... My fault for not looking at my emails, etc. But why did I have to go to the international airport for a domestic flight...? Then a crooked taxi cab driver ripped us off driving from the domestic to international terminal because we did not have enough time to hop on the free shuttle. This happened to so many people we met at the Jetstar terminal. Quality/Quantity - Low cost carrier. And they are proud of it. Advertises it aggressively, part of their branding. For the people reading from the US - Think Frontier, Spirit low cost. If you know, you KNOW! On our flight back, our fault (not theirs), we went over the luggage weight of only 10kg (22 lbs). This applies to BOTH the carry on and backpack together, which I did not know. My two empty bags alone probably weighed 5kg... The penalty was $65AUD, probably more than the cost of our one way flight per person, LOL! Atmosphere - No thrills, no frills. As advertised, you get what you pay for. Service - Minimum service. My main issues with the hotel, and hence a relatively low rating are the fact that the room was so dated, the furniture looked old and the decor was somewhat battered - it looked like someone had been hacking chunks out of the window frame. The bathroom was tiny. The air conditioning was very noisy but the room quickly got too hot with it switched off. The bed wasn't the most comfortable, and to ensure I was awake early a delivery vehicle was parked right under my bedroom window with its engine running for at least 45 minutes in the early hours. The walls and windows seem to offer very little in the way of sound proofing, in fact I could hear voices from neighbouring rooms almost constantly. I expected better from a Mercure. The hotel has a bar with daily happy hours where prices are reduced by 20%, though the bar itself is a windowless box and not the nicest place to spend time, although some of the seating is comfortable. The hotel includes free wifi, though it was painfully slow. Good service from the friendly concierge who booked the bus to the airport for me. Despite its good location within walking distance of Melbourne's main attractions, I would probably book elsewhere for my next trip to Melbourne.

There is also a train station at Melbourne Central. The rooms are quite cheap and not too small in comparison to some other budget hotels. (If you are comparing them to say Japan or France, they are huge!) We had a king sized bed and a decent view of city buildings. The bathroom is quite compact but has all that you need. If you are worried the basic room will be too small, there is a small fee for a bigger room, bigger bed and better view. The staff are friendly and efficient. We arrived about 10.30am, hoping to have our luggage put into holding. They told us our room was clean but hadn't been inspected yet but would be ready in an hour - pretty great for early check in. We were really impressed they were happy for us to check in several hours earlier than usual. The down side for me is were the wifi, it costs $15 for 36 hours and also, the air conditioner just recycled the air and it made the room quite stuffy. Considering the price and the amazing central location to shops, China town, restaurants and bars I would absolutely recommend a stay here. If not anything else, you will save on taxi fares and train tickets if you stay in the heart of the city.
