They didn't have a locker big enough for my suitcase, so I got pointed to a luggage storage place around the corner. It's run by the same guys who provide the Smarte Carts at the airport. I was able to quickly drop off my bag, get a receipt and go. For an extra fee, they even delivered my bag to the airport for me! Sweet! When I went to retrieve my bag, it all worked out- they had it in one piece. They were cheaper than the luggage place at Southern Cross, but the drawback is that they close early. Don't show up on time, and you gotta wait for the next day. However, the desk at the airport is open late! If you're getting it delivered- no worries, mate! The location was a bit hard to find, tucked back in the far side of a two story red brick building, where you have to go through a courtyard full of bicycle art to get there.

The drive is about 30 minutes. Once you get dropped off the Southern Cross Station, you can take a tram to your final destination. Buses run every 10-15 minutes.

Apparently, they were still transitioning over to the digital format as none of the Border Force agents knew what to do with that QR code. After taking care of that, I exited the terminal to head over to terminal 1 to catch my short flight into Sydney.

Checking baggage weight at the boarding gate and very old tight seats. Worse is some of the staff like the heavy set woman and Cairns. She immediately had an attitude when I asked where I was sitting. Even though I purchased extra weight for carry on, it registered as check-in. When I asked if I could just carry on, she flatly refused and waited to charge me extra even though I was only carrying 16 KG when I I paid online for 25kg. Avoid the hassle unless you are small and carrying under 7 kg. Otherwise, the price will be comparable with Qantas even though they charge more upfront. They don't have all the limitations that Jetstar imposes. Avoid avoid and abort.

This applies to BOTH the carry on and backpack together, which I did not know. My two empty bags alone probably weighed 5kg... My main issues with the hotel, and hence a relatively low rating are the fact that the room was so dated, the furniture looked old and the decor was somewhat battered - it looked like someone had been hacking chunks out of the window frame. The bed wasn't the most comfortable, and to ensure I was awake early a delivery vehicle was parked right under my bedroom window with its engine running for at least 45 minutes in the early hours. The walls and windows seem to offer very little in the way of sound proofing, in fact I could hear voices from neighbouring rooms almost constantly. I expected better from a Mercure. The hotel has a bar with daily happy hours where prices are reduced by 20%, though the bar itself is a windowless box and not the nicest place to spend time, although some of the seating is comfortable. The hotel includes free wifi, though it was painfully slow. Good service from the friendly concierge who booked the bus to the airport for me. Despite its good location within walking distance of Melbourne's main attractions, I would probably book elsewhere for my next trip to Melbourne.

The location cannot be beat. Located in the center of Melbourne's CBD with Swanston Street and Chinatown literally on it's door step both Mercure and Hotel Welcome score 5 stars for location. The lobby is a consistant stream of groups checking in and the staff were polite although not friendly and welcoming as the name suggests. The room itself is practical. The comfortable bed takes up most of this shoebox sized room. The bathroom is small and appears to have been tacked on as an afterthought. For me, what makes a hotel stay amazing is the room décor and space. This is where Hotel Welcome falls short in comparison to Mercure as well as many other budget hotels I have frequented. Both Mercure properties share a similar aesthetic. Muted decor and no injection of colour to speak of. But where Mercure suites are spacious and well finished, Hotel Welcome is not. It is clearly the budget option which is fine but at the same time I do expect more from a Mercure hotel. The separate lift and entrance at the rear of the hotel does little to dissuade comparisons as the poor cousin. While Hotel Welcome is a great budget option, you can't help but compare it to it's big sister and it sure isn't the family favorite.
