They have standards pub food such as fish and chips, bangers and mash etc. Th quality is good if not outstanding (don't expect an upscale gastropub as you might find in London). The atmosphere is welcoming and loud. We had two children with us and they did fine. When I am in the UK I really enjoy the pubs. We just don't seem to be able to get these right in the US although some of the new microbreweries are getting close. Anyway the ship and Castle is a good place to have dinner after visiting the exhibits at the Portsmouth Historic Dock complex as it is almost next door.

This year, for the first time, I went alone having lost my fiance last year to cancer. I felt a bit uncomfortable going alone, but the staff remembered me and made me very welcome, thereby making the whole experience bearable, and actually quite enjoyable.
