Hierdurch war es natürlich recht laut, aber erträglich. Für ein lauschiges Rendezvous würde sich aber eh ein Italiener anbieten.... Nun zum Essen. Wir waren zu viert und hatten auch recht unterschiedlich bestellt, somit konnten wir super vergleichen. Alle Gerichte waren superlecker, der Knaller jedoch waren die Linsen. Die auf der Karte mit Peperonis markierten Gerichte haben diese Markierung nicht umsonst. Wer nicht wirklich scharfes Essen gewöhnt ist sollte es vielleicht eine Stufe niedriger versuchen oder dies bei der Bestellung erwähnen. Wir hatten einen sehr mäkligen Esser dabei, für den die Küche alle Wünsche umsetzte. Alles in allem ein gelungener Abend. Wir werden mit Sicherheit wiederkommen obwohl wir hierfür einen nicht unerheblichen Fahrweg auf uns nehmen müssen. Es lohnt sich!

What they call onion bhajis in this restaurant are poor, low-quality onion rings. Onion coated in a fatty batter. The spicy dishes like madras, jalfrezi and vindaloo are much the same degree of spiciness and flavour as each other... not very. I have always asked for authentic Indian vindaloo (so HOT), and I think that they just put an extra pinch of chilli powder in the sauce. Very disappointing. All very similar sauces. The chicken I believe (and I might be wrong), is mechanically-recovered chicken. It always has the strangest texture. Slightly slimy too..! Not a quality ingredient at all. Dishes are 'well padded out' with potato. What did it for us at our last (and very last) visit was when my partner ordered a glass of water instead of his usual beer. When the bill came we were horrified to see that we had been charged €4,40 for a glass of water. Not a bottle brought to the table, not a pretentious, fancy Italian brand.. just plain water 'mit'. There aren't many choices of authentic Indian restaurants in Germany, in fact, I haven't come across any but I do object to being ripped off with poor quality ingredients and obscenely over-priced water. As locals who live a short walk from Zaika and have recently visited the restaurant on a weekly basis, we won't be going again. The hunt continues for an 'authentic', quality Indian restaurant in East Berlin.

The do's (1) Please try their vadas (deep fried lentil donuts) as they are fresh and crispy (2) the coconut chutney was really well done (3) yellow lentils are a good preparation as well. Note that entrees are served with rice and salad. (4) one of the mixed vegetable entree had a distinct flavor of some left over fish based preparation - perhaps the same pan was used (we were told that was not the case). It took a while to get there and I am SO glad I did. Walking in the owner lady was obviously very busy with the service, but she made sure to stop and welcome me and get me to a table right away. The smell that one is hit with as you enter will give you the smile you know that will come with great Indian food. After looking over the excellent menu offerings, I opted for the duck (ente) tikka. It was sizzling at it hit the table and the only bad thing is that I had to let it cool off just a bit before jumping it. A painful wait. But that said, I absolutely loved it. The duck was perfectly cook and the spice combination was excellent. Just great all the way around. And the owner came by several times to check on me and I know why she is smiling all the time, because everyone is killing what they serve. Well worth the effort to get there.

We were the only patrons at lunch time the day before Christmas, and given the slow season they did a great job serving us a variety of foods from the menu. The paneer, lamb meat, and lentil soup that I've tried tasted well (maybe a little bit too much salt), and the naan bread plus dip was warm and fluffy. Prices are on the upper end for the area - but the food justifies it. The restaurant is centrally located and it's only a short walk to the historic city wall.

It was so good, I had to get the name of it, Louis Eschensauer Merlot. I can't wait to have this again! After my meal, I was served a mango shot on the house.
