We are staying at the Sleepy Hollow campground in Wall SD and our Ram 3500 would not shift into gear so we were stuck able to go no where. My husband reached out to Jerry at Badlands Auto and he came out that night to look at what was causing our issue. He was not able to fix it then so he said he would call Dodge in the morning for suggestions. Turns out the part that needed to be replaced is now obsolete. He then went to work on a temporary fix for us. He just came out again and brought some bushings he thought may help but they were all too big. He had reached out to the Dodge dealer in Phillip SD and explained our issue and they can get us in this afternoon for a repair!!! We asked if he could show me the problem which he had no issue with so under the truck we went and he added two zip ties which should get us to the Dodge place in Phillip this afternoon!! If I could give 10 stars I would!! He was so willing to do whatever he could to get us up and running again! Let me start by saying I used to do all my own work on my vehicles until about a month ago when I sold everything and got on the road. I have a 12 year old truck that I hate to let anyone but myself work on and I'm very picky about my mechanics, especially coming from the east coast where finding an honest and knowledgeable mechanic is like herding cats. I was sitting in Badlands National Park when we realized the car was leaking coolant. Lots of coolant. Took it to the only guy that would make the time to look at it. Mom and Pop shop which to me, is a good thing. I always try to support local small business. It took him a minute to figure out what it was and showed me. Had the part ordered immediately. When it came a few hours later, toward the end of the day, turned out to be the wrong part (catalogue fault, not his) and with the nearest store being 45 minutes away, most shops would've quit for the day. What does this guy do? Has his wife pick up the part and drive it to the shop so he can get it installed the same day. If that's not customer service, I don't know what is. read more

Like others, I was on vacation and had just pulled off the freeway in order to visit Wall Drug. I noticed a distinct grinding/scratching noise whenever the car drove forward or backward. When I rolled down the window, I realized it was coming from my rental car. It was a Saturday and Wall is a very small town. So I pulled into a convenience store and asked if there might be an auto repair place in town. I was directed to Jerry at Badlands Automotive. Even though he had another customer waiting for help, he found time to solve my problem. The problem wasn't bad fortunately, but it meant the world to me to have it taken care of. (I had hit a tumbleweed while driving on the freeway and that scraping/scratching noise was the tumbleweed -- still caught under my car. Jerry went under the car and removed all of the tumbleweed.) Jerry handled it quickly and professionally and I was so relieved to have it taken care of. I thought I had a very serious car problem, and Jerry was terrific in taking care of my concerns. We bought a used car in Rapid City. We paid $14,000 for a car, drove it off the lot and headed home, back to Pierre. Needless to say the car quit us by exit 90. We went to Wall and were referred to Badlands Automotive. It was 9 pm when we called and spoke to Jerry. We gave him a description of what happened and he said he was pretty sure it was the alternator. He told us he could have the part from Rapid City the next day by noon. He gave us the numbers for a couple of tow companies and we had the car towed to his shop that night. We stayed the night in Wall. The next day, just as Jerry had said, he had the part by noon and had the car fixed and on the road again by early afternoon. He did a fantastic job and was very helpful. We would highly recommend his services! He was very fair on his prices and very helpful even after hours! You don't find service like this very often! While going through the Badlands National Park we noticed a puddle of coolant fluids under our van. We started checking around and in Wall, SD, the nearest town, we were referred to Badlands Automotive. We were told that this mechanic was honest, good and very decent in his pricing. We went over to his shop and talked to him. He quickly checked the problem. It was a cracked radiator. He ordered the part, the next day he fixed the van as soon as the part arrived. We were on the road again soon. He test drove the van and assured everything was fine. We've been touring South Dakota, Wyoming and Colorado after that. No more overheating or spilled coolant, the gauge stays in place and everything works fine. The invoice was indeed very affordable and honest. I wish I had a mechanic like him at home. read more

I was 1500 miles from home, on vacation, and got a small coolant leak coming through Badlands. I knew this was going to cost a lot of money and probably take about a day or two from my vacation. I made it into Wall and quickly locals referred this place because it was the only one around. I figured I would go check it out. The guy at this shop immediately came to check it out, which was awesome to begin with, and told me what the problem was and even a couple more things I needed to get checked out when I got home. I had just been to Dealership before trip but he was correct about it all. The shop is weathered, but what I gathered from my experience is this guy loved what he did and not ripping people off to have a fancy shop. read more

Heading home to Seattle in a truck that had been sitting for about ten months when the battery light starts flashing on and off. Ended up stopping in Wall for the night asked the hotel if they had a shop in town they recommended Badlands Auto run by Jerry. Went to see him in the morning he looked at the truck right way and diagnosed a bad alternator. I didn't expect him to have the part but he did and replaced it within the hour. He found a Toyota headlamp in Sioux Falls & had it delivered overnight, in order to replace our busted headlamp after a deer ran into our Toyota RAV while pulling a camper trailer. I was on vacation when a wheel bearing on our popup camper went bad. The owner fixed it by 5:00pm the next day (he had to get the part from Rapid City). The repair came to $134 the tow for the camper cost more. The owner could easily have over charged us as there are few repair options in the area but didn't.
