Casual restaurant attached to ranch lodge. We went for the Christmas dinner which was awesome. Service was great considering how many customers were relying on the restaurant for food that night. They played Christmas music and the dining room was comfortable and well decorated. The plate was $24 and included ham, turkey, gravy, squash casserole, scalloped potatoes, some sort of pecan / pumpkin stuffing, cranberry salad, dinner rolls and a side salad with dressing. We also ordered a bottle of wine. Good selection of wines all less than $40 a bottle. We got a blueberry crumb pie and chocolate cream pie which were DELICIOUS!

We stopped in after a long day at Big Bend, and it ended up being one of the highlights of our whole trip. Let's start with the beef nachos. I've had a lot of nachos in my life, but these are on another level. The beef was incredibly flavorful--seasoned perfectly and piled on generously. Each chip was individually loaded instead of just dumping toppings on top, so every single bite had that perfect balance of crispy chip, melty cheese, tender beef, and fresh toppings. Do not skip these. I'm still thinking about them days later. For my main, I went with the shredded beef sandwich, and wow. The beef was so tender it practically fell apart, slow-cooked to perfection and piled high on what I think was a fresh-baked bun. It came with these seasoned fries that were crispy and well-salted. My partner got the enchiladas (also great), but honestly I couldn't stop stealing bites of my own sandwich. The view from the patio is ridiculous--you're looking straight at the Chisos Mountains while eating some of the best food in West Texas. The cocktail menu is legit too; the mezcal margarita paired perfectly with everything. Service was friendly and laid-back, exactly the vibe you want in Terlingua. A heads-up: it gets busy around sunset, so either show up early or be prepared to wait a bit. Totally worth it though. If you're in the Big Bend area, do yourself a favor and eat here. Get the beef nachos. Get the shredded beef sandwich. Thank me later.

However, with uncanny timing in the scorching Texas Summer, the power was out at our Airbnb. Sweaty, tired, and frustrated, we arrived at the Starlight looking for solace. Thankfully, coming in during the exact offseason of Big Bend, there was no wait at all for our group of six. Service was great. Namely, we quickly got waters to quench our thirsts. Never having tried an antelope burger, I opted for that. Minimal to no gamey flavor at all. If anything, it was pretty much similar in almost all aspects to a lean beef burger. The green chile added some texture and flavor but not to the point where it detracts from the meat itself. That's a plus! Other things that I will note - the restroom is outside in a shack that's right across from the outside bar area. The inside of the restaurant truly feels rustic and magical at the same time - a feel that really encapsulates Terlingua. We didn't get to see a performance. It looked like they were preparing for one but there wasn't anything for that evening. Some pluses were that our waitress was kind enough to give us a bag of ice as the restaurant was closing for the night. It was definitely appreciated as our the power to our Airbnb would not be restored until afternoon of the next day. She could have easily charged us but she did not. Much appreciated!

In the in seasonal peak times, our waiter informed us there could be up to 200 people lining up out the door. While the food was good with great service, I think I'd be disappointed. It was great to be able to check off antelope from the bucket list of exotic fare. The food was good and represented the area well, but I wouldn't rave about it. Fir beer and soda, there is only canned and bottled as their soda fountain was broken along with the draft system- which has been for years now. Now on the other hand, the 3 margaritas we had were outstanding! There is a ramp along with stairs to enter. For the not-so-nice... there is a shared outdoor restroom with a toilet, urinal snd sink attached to the old jail cell. The urinal was so close to the toilet, that when getting up, it felt like you were shoving your head inside. And it reeked of old nasty urine. My suggestion, hold it.

The first time I went to check it out I was offput by the QR code ordering nonsense. The employees were completely locked to their phones doomscrolling and it was difficult to get anyone's attention. Food was pretty weak, but acceptable for a diner. Price was ok. Then tonight I thinks to myself, I can't sleep, I should try that diner again - so I go out there at 1:30a and all the employees are hanging out in the parking lot playing with a car and tell me the diner is closed. Come back in a few hours. If you're driving through Alpine and you want a mediocre burger that isn't going to end up costing you $45, maybe it's worth a stop (it isn't) - but definitely don't go a single mile out of your way for it. They do not care at all and they really want you to know that.

There was an American Flag and a Texas flag flying out front. We walked in and waited for someone to greet us and seat us. After we were at our table, drink orders were taken. When our water was brought out, we were also given some Honey Pecan Biscuits with butter. They were warm and I liked the pecans in it! Hubby & I shared everything. We started with a cup of Jalapeño and Cilantro Soup. It's a cream based soup. I couldn't detect much of any heat from the Jalapeños and the cilantro was pretty much hidden. Maybe a sprinkling of fresh cilantro on top would have made it more pronounced. It also needed to be served hot. We then got the 14oz Ribeye which came with mashed potatoes & green beans. This was a great plate of food! It came out hot! The person who brought it out waited until we cut into it to see if it was acceptable. We've never had any staff person do that for us before! It was a little under done on one side, but the other was perfect. We almost finished the plate. It was delicious! Lastly, we got the Chocolate Bread Pudding Tamale. It comes wrapped in a corn husk that it is cooked in. You remove it and eat the bread pudding. It was gummy in a good way, as hubby described it. It needed the fresh strawberries & ice cream that came on the plate. We really enjoyed our dinner! Our server, Jordan, was very efficient & made it a nice experience! We probably won't travel this way again, but if we did, we would definitely return!
