Driving here from the Rio Grande beach area requires navigating a lot of windy very narrow roads. We only attempt the drive when we know we can be back before dark. When you arrive at the restaurant you park at the bottom of the hill and then walk up. (You won't see it from the road) For mobility impaired guests you can drive up and drop off passengers. The restaurant is two floors and is "open air" with plastic and/or shades that roll down in the event of a quick shower. Cons: It's so removed from everything and remote, account for a good 45-70 mins to get here from anywhere on the island even with tolls. The roads leading to this place are winding and narrow so a bit creepy. It's all out in the open, which is beautiful because countryside but also exposed to bugs and lizards esp with all the unpredictable rain. There's a steep slope leading to the restaurant. Service is a wee bit slow. Pros: Food - there's skill here and it comes through in the execution of the dishes. We tried a lot of vegetarian options - watermelon and cucumber salads, roasted pumpkin, root veg fritters, bread pudding and chocolate cake and one fried chicken dish. Some dishes use techniques that show finesse. But flavors are very subtle, as with the rest of the island. read more

WOW is probably the only appropriate description. The substantial portion of fresh prawns, simply prepared, head on over a romesco sauce, served with pumpkin rice, were nothing short of succulent and the Lamb Pastelon was expertly crafted into delicate layers that made this traditionally heavy dish, seem lighter Finally, the denouement of the meal was the Bread Pudding. The pigeon pea dip was grainy and very strong cumin taste. The pumpkin dip tasted good, well-balanced flavor and texture. I got the grilled whole snapper. The fish was on the dry side. There's nothing spectacular or amazing flavor - just fish with a good squeeze of lemon. The only redeeming food was the NY steak covered with coffee. It was tender and cooked very well. The pina colada flavor tasted more like coconut cream - very weak pineapple flavor. Overall, very disappointed. For a bill of $180 for 2 people - it was not worth it. read more

The ambience was lovely with traditional puertorrican music on the background. Very chill vibe. I went with my mom and husband and we stated with some cocktails and appetizers. We ordered the cabbage, the 'bacalaitos' and the smoke local pork. Everything exceptional! The bacalaitos were perfectly crunchy, the cabbage had a smoke to it that was delicious and the pork was tender and tasty. As main course I had the swordfish fillet made perfectly with a buttery sauce and some malanga chips on top. My mom and my husband shared the catch of the day made on the grill. Our waitress was so nice and told us all about the menu and best items to try! My wife and I had the cod and beef croquettes which had so much lasting flavor I recommend. Then we had the lentil and pork ragu with fresh bread... this was so flavorful and delicious. For mains we had the coffee and pepper crusted prime rib with a chimichurri sauce along with rice and beans, and the wood fired red snapper. Appetizers were great. The tomato and cherry salad was marvelous, so was the pumpkin with goat cheese, but there were several appetizers and foods we couldn't explore because of technical difficulties in the kitchen. Nevertheless that did not include the steak, which was amazing. El churrasco and the NY steak are definitely great dishes. The eggplant was.. questionable, but then again I have never had eggplant before. My father did, however, and we did not enjoy the plate. My mother did though, so take that as you will! Amarillitos were also okay. Here is where it gets troubling. We had gotten at the restaurant at 5:15 just in time for our reservations. The man at the front was very kind and willing. Nonetheless, we had to wait around five minutes outside until they notified us that we could enter via text. No problem. We placed in our orders for appetizers at around 5:30, entrees at 5:50. The appetizers came out incredibly fast! We were all impressed with the service until thirty minutes had passed and our food had not arrived yet. We tried to given the kitchen the benefit of the doubt since many of us had ordered complicated dishes like the steak, but when we asked the waitress for an update, she disappeared for thirty minutes. We waited over an hour, and even the manager had to get involved, offering to push up our order after we said we could not wait for four more tables since we had a 3 year old. (They said it would be another four tables until they could start preparing our order, after an hour and 30 minutes.) They ended up giving us our dessert on the house due to the inconvenience. Their banana desert, el budín, was stupendous. Reasonable prices, beautiful scenery upon arrival. I loved the pond and loved that they had a bar available for those waiting to be seated outside. The walk was not bad at all, just a small hill. And there was the option to bring the car to the front of the restaurant for those with physical disabilities. It's definitely a farm, it's not high-end. It's cozy, familiar, a great place to eat with family. No mosquitoes, a few bugs here and there yes, but that's just Puerto Rico! Bathrooms were fine as well. This place would have had a much better review if it weren't for the fact that it took over an hour to receive our food. Even if it was a holiday such as Father's Day, the kitchen malfunctioning, half of the menu not being available, and the ridiculously long wait time, cast somewhat of a negative light. The manager and the on-the-house desserts saved this experience. I do understand that these kinds of things can happen. read more

I think I had high expectations of this spot because I read a BBC article about how this might be the best restaurant in the U.S., which is admittedly a high bar. I think some things were five stars - the pumpkin dish with nuts and the acerola (Suriname cherry) juice. The bread with pigeon pea (gandules) dip was yummy, but not enough I'd go out of my way to get it again. The prime rib was so disappointing to me - an unexciting steak at a really high price, which I think really lowered my experience of the restaurant (def 2-3 stars). It is a pretty restaurant and lots of greenery around, and the service and staff were great. But I don't think I'd go out of my way to eat here again or recommend folks do (maybe if you order better). read more

I write this review with mixed feelings and I'll tell you why. After reading the BBC article on Bacoa and it being considered one of the best restaurants in the United States and in PR I figured it was worth a shot - of course expectations were set high based on the article. Upon arriving we were greeted and seated right away. Began our drinks order with a piña colada and mojito. Simply put, drinks were spectacular - best piña colada I've had in Puerto Rico so far. For appetizers we had the beets dip, bacalaito (cod fritters), and watermelon salad. I can't tell you how insanely delicious the beet dip and fritters tasted ( I was not a fan of the salad). Moving to entrees, we had the prime rib steak and whole branzino. Both dishes were beautifully presented and looked mouthwatering. Prime rib was cooked as ordered and pretty tasty. Branzino had some very fishy tasting parts and some with no flavor. I also didn't think the mango slices pair well with the fish. Lastly for dessert we had a very original dessert - almond flan with a thick layer of shredded almond found at the bottom of the custard dessert. Never had a flan like this before - muy yummy. You might be wandering, why the low rating? I enjoyed our apps and drinks more than the entrees because it was fresh and tasty. However, I struggle with this restaurant being considered one of the very best in the US and it's territories. Although, service was great, we informed our server from the beginning that we planned to share our entire meal and for the prime rib steak we only got one steak knife. Our experience can be described as good, but not remarkable. Food can be described as good, but not outstanding. This is going to be one of my new "you gotta go" places for Puerto Rico. This restaurant was a bit of a drive, for us, and left me feeling a bit car sick but it is absolutely worth the ride. We had a late night, large group reservation and the staff took such good care of us, as if we were their friends and family. The open area seating area makes it a beautiful and relaxing dining, even when we had some rain roll in. We got so many items to share, and with all of us eating I did not get any pictures sadly of the food and due to the person who wanted to go there I am not 100% sure on dishes names as he ordered for the entire table. The meat was delicious, juicy and smokey.. I could have just ate meat and been happy. There was not one bad plate and the highlights were the drinks and deserts so make sure to leave room for those. I believe their items rotate quite a bit based on what produce is currently flourishing so finding a menu can prove hard to do until you get there. Sadly during the rain early that year they lost their plantain trees so we were not able to have any plantain dishes. We also regretted our late reservation as we were too late to tour their property and next time I will get to see the farm. read more
