Not your average southern barbecue, the sweet sauce was still tangy and had a thick consistency. The brisket (what i had) was extremely well prepared (among the best I have had), the beans in a more Texas style had meat in them but we detectible none the less. This is a win for a barbecue lover, and a good eat for those jut looking for a lunch. read more

I am from Louisiana in town for work. I had the BBQ beef sandwich which was to die for! I also got a side of onion rings (bc I'm a sucker for homemade ones) and although I wished they would've had a half order they were delicious!! I couldn't eat them all and for $5 I hated to waste them. A friend recommended this place to me and although i had no room for dessert, she said the pie was amazing! An old pal of mine recommended Backyard BBQ on my next trip to Monticello. I'm pretty sure he has been inventing work-related reasons to take business trips here. He always stops at The Backyard. I see why. He raved about the beans and banana puddling (served separately). I had the regular sliced pork sandwich (easily half pound of meat, tender, juicy, and tasty) with slaw and beans for sides, and banana pudding for $13. The slaw was good - no secret recipe going on here. The beans were, well, I never get beans, but the girl taking my order said they were her favorite. Her, too? Okay, I got the beans. I ate them all. First. Before eating anything else. Wished I had got the beans as a double side. And, began having serious thoughts being able to even try the rest of my meal. In case there is any question, the beans were amazing. This where the secret recipe lives. I won't try to describe them; you must try them yourself. And the banana puddling? I was an ugly mound of deliciousness well worth saving until the end. Ordinarily, I would split a meal this large but I skipped breakfast and think dinner won't be necessary. For those Yelpers who complained about being out of some menu items, well, that is always a possibility in real BBQ joints. Being able to predict the right amount, ready to go, perfectly smoked, not dried out, and not from last week is a real art. On my visit, they were out of smoked sausage but it was 3:00 pm and the lunch crowd finished them off. The meat for dinner wasn't ready and some things don't get rushed. And for service? It was fine. Everyone was pleasant and polite. My meal was brought to my table and the server was perfectly attentive. Of course, I'll be back. There is so much more to try. read more

First time visit - ordered rack of ribs and onion rings. Ribs were excellent - seasoned wonderfully, tender, but not fall off the bone.

Oddly enough the fried broccoli was the best thing on the menu. Now to be honest I didn't have any ice cream or pie. I'm sure they were better yet. The BBQ though was interesting. Mixed in with the brisket was a red mystery meat. It appeared to be raw hamburger. Yuk!!!! read more

They provide extremely slow service with a frown. We tried going when they were empty, but the wait still managed to be longer than 45 minutes. When you enter the restaurant, you are met with no greeting and an annoyed expression. There are plenty of places around town with friendly staff and prompt service. While on vacation the Hubs & I ate here at the advice of one of his fellow coworkers. We split a rack of ribs w onion rings, beans & toast and still had enough to take w us for a snack later. For desert we had cherry cheesecake. It was OK. I am just not a big fan of pie filling for topping. Fresh strawberries would have been much better. Ribs are not ready till 11:30 and it gets really busy then. They were very good. Would have given five stars but missing a few little details in customer service that would have made the difference. read more

They have great barbecue but you better not be in a hurry to get your food. They are very disorganized behind the counter and the call in orders are definitely slowing their orders for in-house. Sorry but the place was just plain dirty. I had already ordered at the counter, so I went ahead and tried the food when it arrived. I had the beef brisket plate. It was pretty good, the brisket had good flavor, even without the sauce and the potato salad was very good. I didn't care for the BBQ sauce but every else liked it. My biggest complaint was the lack of cleanliness. When someone did try to clean some of the tables they used a dry paper towel to brush most of the food into the floor and just left the rest. The brisket sandwich was mediocre (like the Sam's Club pre made kind), but the pork sandwich was good. The sausage sandwich consisted of a large portion (about 10 inches) of smoked sausage on crusty french bread. Sadly, I didn't order the ribs but they looked awesome. I would eat here again, but wouldn't order so much. Three sandwiches one fry and one onion ring order was WAY too much food for the three people in my party, of course the prices justified the portions. I will know better next time and split a sandwich. read more

First timer. Very large portions. Onion rings were some of the best I have had, good ratio of batter to onion, great taste. Ribs were fall of the bone, not over sauced, with good bark. Unique is a word I don't normally think of for food reviews but the bbq sauce is just that. REALLY Good too! Sweet like relish but with a hard to pin down spicy kick that is slightly delayed. The best ribs I've had, short of my own, in a while! Beans are unique too. Not just beans; mixed with some meat etc. and add some sauce on them and POW! Slaw was wide cut, with just enough juice - add some pepper and that was some really good slaw too! Then I finished it off with a piece of Oreo cheesecake- another WOW! Tried to go buy a whole one and they were out. Oh and I noticed they have flavor syrups above the fountain drink machine. Will be back when I'm in the area!!!!!!! read more

Fabulous! Bbq was delicious. Baked beans were amazing. But the pie was best lemon pie I ever had.

With such wonderful food, is there any reason not to go? This may look like a bit of a dive, and maybe it is, but that's in the best possible way. The pork sandwich is my favorite thing on the menu, but the beans are a close second--and you should save room for pie. Or, if you have to, plan to take it along with you. I've never met a piece of pie there that I wouldn't recommend, but my personal favorite is the pecan with the layer of cream cheese underneath. An hour wait for food is standard, and the food is just not THAT good. I called in an order for bulk meat. That's it. All they had to do was put some meat that was already cooked into a container and weigh it. They told me it would take 30-35 minutes, so i arrived in 30 minutes. I met a friend on his way out as i was going in; he said it took them 1 hour to complete his call in order. And he told me there was a woman inside who had been waiting 1.5 hours for her order. I waited another thirty minutes for my food. An hour total for them to literally put some already made meat into a container and weigh it and ring me up. Unacceptable. I put the blame 100% on the evening staff. I watched as they slowly walked around with no sense of urgency, they could not multi-task, and they flatly ignored people. I complained, but got the text book "oh, we're understaffed tonight" answer. WRONG! It is like this with every one i talk to, every time they go in the evenings. This is a systematic, ongoing issue; not an isolated event. read more

The sliced pork sandwich is delicious. I always get the sandwich topped with cole slaw, and I get double baked beans for my sides. The food here is incredible. Their pies are awesome too. This is definitely one of my favorite restaurants anywhere. It never disappoints. read more

Excellent food is served served here. My dad and I like to get the tub and rings and split it. It is so much food that it could feed 3 people easily so we always end up with leftovers. Favorite appetizer is the broccoli bites! They make all sorts of wonderful pies. My only complaint is their menu is a bit pricey. read more

I don't live in Magnolia but come here several times a week for work. I always come here to eat at least once a week. Food is great and big portions. Pies are unbelievably good. The problem that I have is the poor service. Be prepared to wait. Tonight is over 40 minutes for a brisket sandwich, beans and slaw. That is close to normal, so have patience. read more

Probably one of the best BBQ place I've ever eaten at! I had the BBQ beef sandwich which was huge and very flavorful. The BBQ beans with ground beef are full of flavor. Husband had the chicken basket which was fresh breasts hand battered and fried! It came with hot steak fries. So good, and fresh and hot! I did have the BBQ corn that I didn't care for. It was a corn on the cob dipped in the fryer for a minute with butter on it. It just tasted like greasy corn. Cole slaw was ok, not sweet like I like it. Now for desserts! They had some beautiful pies on display. We splurged for the strawberry pie, blueberry cheesecake, and banana pudding. They were all so succulent!!! I'm taking half of my food home because there was so much beef on my sandwich! You won't be disappointed if you eat here. The service was fast and friendly as well!
