I was referred to Back to Life by Kaiser. Location is in the historic Flood Building, a block south of Union Square. Scheduling has been easy and straightforward. I've been seeing Natalie for my Pelvic Floor PT for about 6 weeks, and it's been a great, effective experience. Natalie is incredibly knowledgeable and makes you feel very comfortable working through physical issues of the intimate variety. Amy saved me. I had been suffering from what doctors kept telling me were chronic UTI's for 5 months, but every time I was tested for a UTI it came back negative. I was seeing a urologist and put on nerve pain medication when I was finally referred to Amy for pelvic floor physical therapy after I kept telling my doctor my pain was starting in the bottom of my foot (no one else took this seriously). During our initial session I was nervous - it's definitely an awkward experience to have a PT go up ... there ... but Amy made me feel so relaxed. She could tell that my pelvic floor was definitely out of whack and we realized it was due to an ATV accident I had that shifted my tailbone. After just three sessions I was completely cured. I went to this clinic for about an entire year (mid 2013 - mid 2014) and by the end of it all I had nothing to show for it. I used to drive about 100 miles round trip once or twice a week (while in a lot of pain) to come and get treatments mostly by Lisa Gibson who no longer works there, but also by Dr. Amy as well. I must have spent more than $2,000 on all my visits combined. I will say that Lisa and Amy did try very hard to relieve my symptoms, however it did not work. They were both very kind, compassionate and extremely knowledgeable in their line of work so I feel bad leaving only 2 stars, but I went to get relief from pain which their website says they offer and yet after all the money, time and effort I put into it all, I came out with no results. Amy eventually recommended that I go see an osteopath that she knew of who was apparently extremely skilled. I did go, for another year actually, and thousands of dollars later I also received NO relief (you can read one of my other reviews and see what I am talking about). I might sound like a negative Nancy by now, but when you're in pain and expect that all the time, exercises, stretches, manipulations, money etc. are going to help and it doesn't... well that can frustrate one quite a bit. As you can see others who have left reviews obviously had success with the clinic and I don't doubt it, as I said earlier Dr. Amy is very intelligent, it's just unfortunate she couldn't help me with my musculoskeletal issues. read more

Amy Selinger is an astounding Physical Therapist. Her practice is oriented toward non post operative physical therapy. Her goal is to help address the biomechanical problems in your body that are causing the pain, in order to both get rid of the pain, and avoid surgery. I have had many physical therapists over the years, but none have paid so much attention to my body alignment, and to really understand what is going on that is causing pain. She then designs a very individualized excercise regime, which evolves over time. She does not take any insurance, but I have submitted her bills to my insurance and gotten some reimbursement. Her fee is less than a massage, and the long term effects are much more dramatic. read more

Amy is wonderful and amazing and lovely! I've known her since February 2013. She quickly became the medical professional that I trust the most. I saw her about once a week at first. Then we took a break because we thought my surgery had fixed everything. Now I'm back to once a week, sometimes even two. I never leave there feeling like I do when I walk out of an MD's office, which is usually annoyed and frustrated. I always feel heard and like we addressed whatever is hurting the most. I highly recommend Amy, especially to those that are currently frustrated with their health and feel unheard by their MDs. Amy is magical. C'est tout! read more

Back to Life, is truly a one of a kind physical therapy practice in SF and Oakland. Having been to several PT practices I can tell you I have never come across better PT's...ever. They are tops at their game and I have come to trust them to diagnosis issues through their comprehensive evaluation more than doctors. They take a full dedicated hour with you and make sure they are treating you and not just a knee, hip or back. Everything is geared towards you and your total picture. In addition, they are uniquely trained to deal with pelvic floor issues including bladder incontinence and painful sex issues. They are worth any traveling you may have to do to get to them and they have on site parking in SF (never been to Oakland office). No need to ever look further. read more

I was referred to Amy by Lizanne Pastore at POST Wellness in Petaluma (also a great PT). I had been suffering from chronic tailbone pain for a little over two years and had seen four other doctors before working with Amy. She and Lizanne were the only two doctors who have been able to effectively help me with pain management and Amy has been able to address structural anomalies in my hips so that my pain is finally gone! Upon my initial visit, I was taken with Amy's upbeat demeanor and genuine excitement in helping me correct the biomechanics that were exacerbating my pain. She's extremely skilled and knowledgeable, forthright, humorous, and kind, all qualities that make her a trustworthy partner in my treatment. After coming in initially once a week for the first three months, then tapering down, after six months of treatment I am finally alleviated of my tailbone pain! Amy's goal with patients is to get you out of her clinic and to give you the tools necessary to ensure that you are able to carry on pain free. I would also like to comment on Amy's office manager, Colleena. Every time I come into the office or call, I am delighted to talk with Colleena, she is so professional and kind. 5++ stars for Back to Life Physical Therapy! I was referred to Amy by another practitioner at UCSF's Osher Center for my pelvic pain which resulted from surgery to remove a cancerous tumor and the follow up radiation treatment. I cannot say enough about the care and treatment I received at Back to Life as it has effectively treated my pelvic pain. I was taking oxycodone and using a donut for over a year until through a combination of physical therapy and exercises, through Back to Life, was able to finally stop using the donut and stop taking the pain killers. Amy also referred to me to other highly effective practitioners, including Dr Joanna Badger at Stanford, a Gynecologist Dermatologist, to help treat the skin that was damaged by the radiation, I arrived at Back to Life feeling like I had very few options left for alleviating the pain and quite frankly was at my wits end. I cannot thank and recommend enough Amy and the Back to Life staff for the expertise, kindness and care with which they treated me. I will be forever grateful as they have enabled me to live a normal life again. From a convenience perspective, Amy and the team have offices in both San Francisco and Oakland. I know that the San Francisco office offers free parking. Additionally they offer very early and late appointments so it's been very easy for me to schedule appointments outside of working hours. As an aside, I had tried another well known pelvic physical therapy group here in San Francisco and found that I did not receive the care I needed to heal as the practitioners were relatively inexperienced in comparison to the expertise of Amy and the team at Back to Life. read more

Years ago I went to Back to life/Amy for PT after cancer. I returned to Back to Life recently after debilitating back pain. I work primarily with Lisa, Amy's colleague at Back to Life, and have been SO VERY impressed. Without a doubt, Lisa is the reason I am able to function better. She is so knowledgeable, precise and understanding. She really collaborates well with the patient and their providers. I've seen many specialists for varying needs over the years, including many PTs. Amy Selinger is magical. I am so lucky I found her. I had a lingering SI joint / hip injury for about a year and went to see her after going to a number of different doctors and physical therapists who were unable to help me. similar to other folks who have written reviews, i came to amy after seeing several other doctors and physical therapists - all were good, but no one could explain to me what was going on, or help me get better - and i was getting closer to a surgery route. i've had a nagging injury for over a year now. within a month of visiting amy, i'm finally seeing improvement! i love the way she tackles injuries. she looks at all the puzzle pieces of your body: your alignment, funky ways you've learned to compensate for weaknesses - and hones in on the issue(s). she also teaches as she goes, which i love, as it guides how i deal with my injury day-to-day. if you're looking for a PT who is supportive, perceptive, and looks at your whole body as a picture, amy is for you, too! one note: as with all good PTs i've encountered, expect to book a bit in advance. and then when you get your hour with her, expect all of it to be focused on you! read more

I first saw Amy 5 years ago for about 6 months for help with numbness and pain in my right arm. The condition was a result of a bone spur and bulging disc in my neck which was causing a minor compression of the nerve root. She carefully evaluates the body's structure (posture, muscle strength, joint range of movement, etc.) and then designs an individualized exercise program. The success of the program she designed for me was incredible! Now I am back with another spur at S1 and S2 which has caused numbness in my right foot. She has once again thoroughly impressed me with her analysis and the treatment plan! After only 3 visits, I am already feeling better and LOOKING better. I am a man, and Amy also helps men with hip and pelvic problems. However, it is my wife (Megen) who has been seeing Amy for some pelvic pain issues that she has had for many years. She says that Amy started with a very thorough and explicit testing program to see which muscles were too tight, too weak, or too loose. She also started Megen on an exercise program that targets individual muscle groups. The exercises are simple because they are so explicit. Amy is extremely knowledgeable and clear. She is also excellent at explaining where the problem is and what muscle group(s) the exercises are helping. She uses not only words, but pictures and a 3-D model to help explain. Megen says that Amy listens very well and welcomes feedback - that they work as a team. Megen says she can feel strength and flexibility coming back to muscles that have been weak for many years. I had ongoing problems with my arm and back since my service in the Army over 20 years a ago. I've been to doctors and chiropractors and specialists, VA physical therapists, Kaiser therapists, had orthopedic specialists and doctors batteries of tests and MRI's, etc. For years. No one could solve the problem. Nothing helped. It messed up my sleep, affected my ability to work and laid me up for months several times. One session, one hour was all it took for Amy to diagnose and prescribe a simple set of exercises to solve the problem. And it got solved. Completely. I've had no trouble since. The difference is her knowledge and the care and attention she takes. She's the first medical professional I've ever been treated by who actually listened. You have to do your part, do the exercises, but if you let her help you, odds are, you get your life back. I'm a picky, critical person, and I cannot recommend her more highly. Despite her extraordinary expertise and skill, she approaches her patients with an open mind, a willingness to listen and the laser-like focus of a detective attacking a new and complicated puzzle. Unlike the various PTs and doctors I had seen before her who wanted to make an instant diagnosis and send me on my way, working with Amy is like having a partner who is invested in both my progress and my long-term education about my body and how to take care of it. I had chronic imbalances, restrictions, and compensations layered over a severe 12 year old injury - and after over a decade of pain am now free of discomfort and running again. I credit Amy's patience and persistence, and have happily paid out of pocket to see her despite the fact that I have "full" coverage with Kaiser. One of the other wonderful things about Amy is that she values other types of therapy and knows how they will complement her work; she made a number of brilliant recommendations to me that helped break through some plateaus in my healing. amy is one of the best physical therapists i have ever seen. i'm a former gymnast, so i've seen a lot of them. she analyzes your problem very carefully and understands what needs to be done to improve the mechanics/posture of your body. she specializes in hip and back problems. read more
