My mother suffered thoracic fractures and had to be rushed to the emergency room twice due to severe spinal and neck pain. Both times, Dr. Bartoli treated her, referred to us by the hospital doctors. During an incredibly stressful period for our family, he was calm, patient, and compassionate. What stood out most was how carefully he listened. He took the time to thoroughly explain my mother's condition, the procedures, and what we could expect in recovery. He never rushed us, and he made sure I understood everything. His bedside manner is exceptional -- kind, reassuring, and professional. I also deeply appreciate that he does not default to prescribing painkillers. Instead, he encourages a holistic approach to recovery and long-term improvement. At our follow-up appointment, he discussed multiple strategies to support my mother's healing beyond just medication, which gave us confidence that he truly cares about sustainable health outcomes. It's rare to find a doctor who combines technical skill, integrity, and genuine compassion the way Dr. Bartoli does. We are incredibly grateful for his care, and I would highly recommend him to anyone seeking thoughtful and patient-centered treatment.

While my appointment went well, the standard insurance paper work for a cortisone shot (the most common intervention other than pain meds) was rejected, and no one from the office followed up. There were no follow up notes after my appointment for next steps. My primary seemed very surprised that this routine procedure was denied which makes me suspect that they didn't do the minimal paperwork required. When you call 'the office', you reach someone at the main switchboard who presumably passes on a message which may or may not be returned. In my case, it was not even though I requested that they resubmit the paperwork. Keep in mind that many many people reaching out to a pain management doctor are in excruciating, debilitating pain. When I finally went in, I was barely able to walk and had to lie down during the appointment due to the extreme pain. Currently, I'm repeatedly leaving messages at the switchboard attempting to try to get my cortisone shot months after all medical staff I met with agreed that it was necessary. If you are in an acute, debilitating situation with your pain, I'd recommend you seek someone who runs a more responsive office.

I first saw Dr. Hong at St. Francis Sports Medicine after sliding down a flight of stairs on my bum…read moreand going to physical therapy for nearly a year. Dr. Hong told me that the pain was from my L3, 4, and 5 vertebrae, but also said that the MRI didn't show any damage (something about jelly donuts that made absolutely no sense). Ignoring the lack of damage and still saying it was my spine causing the pain. he proceeded to schedule me for a $20,000 injection which included the fentanyl I told him had nearly killed me in a previous epidural. "Yeah, some people get a little sick from the injections," he told me, not mentioning that there are alternatives to fentanyl. Does everyone require a 2 week stay in the ICU after the injections? I doubt it. So after the procedure, a friend walked me home and I went on to an ER at a different hospital to be monitored. Hong did not care that he could have killed me, and did not care that it had happened to me before in another city, another hospital, long before there was a mychart or even internet. He prescribed me tramadol because the injections only gave relief for a couple months. I have hypermobile Ehlers Danlos Syndrome, and tramadol, along with anything ending in -caine literally does not work on us. (Dentists are so fun.) But Dr. Hong proceeded to lecture me about drug abuse when I asked for something that would help, in front of his staff, in front of patients. Yes, I quit crystal meth 30 years ago and never looked back... it only took 3 years of use to ruin my life completely. And it's the opposite of opiates. But he broadcast my history to everyone who could hear him shouting at me in the lobby. I called the St. Francis ombudsman to complain about his violating my HIPAA privacy rights, and Dr. Hong proceeded to get me banned from several pain clinics in the city. (I was advised never to sue a doctor as I would find it hard to get another one. Apparently doctors have their own "blue wall" through the AMA.) 5 years later and 2500 miles east, a knowledgeable doctor also pointed out that there was no injury to my spine. The injury is to my SI joint. Why did Dr. Hong stop at my lumbar vertebrae despite having no injury to them? Was it so he could charge my insurance $20,000 for a lethal injection? It seems likely. If he were a halfway decent doctor, he would have kept looking for the source of my pain, wouldn't he have? According to my friends in the medical field, he absolutely should have realized that my healthy lumbar vertebrae were not the problem, and he absolutely should have realized that my lower back and buttock pain was my damaged SI joint. There's a reason this man is not at UCSF or CPMC. He's a greedy conman posing as a doctor. I can't tell you how thrilled I was when my attorney talked my insurance into only paying 10% of his charge. He shouldn't have gotten that much; it took 6 more years to discover the root of my pain. There was no need for him to nearly kill me. There was no need for my continued suffering. There was no need for him to shout at me, let alone shout at me over my decades-past dependency on something that is as close to the opposite of opiates as you can get, in front of both staff and patients. UCSF took over St. Francis Hospital. I certainly hope they got rid of such a dangerously greedy alleged pain specialist. He ought to lose his license after using fentanyl on me after I told him it nearly killed me in an earlier spinal. Do not put your life in the care of this man. He is evil incarnate, deliberately poisoning people so he can charge them $20k.

I am extremely disappointed by the unprofessional treatment I received. Don't get me wrong,…read moreeveryone was pleasant enough. However, Dr. Hoylong Hong, never offered any assistance in managing my pain. He seemed to surmise that my issue was opiate addiction which I certainly accept because I have been treating chronic pain with prescribed opiates. I had taken the initiative to explore "acupuncture treatment". I was initially excited after the first couple of treatments, my pain returned. Understanding the pressure the federal government is placing on opiate abuse, I was more than willing to explore other options. Just like I had thought of trying "acupuncture", I was hoping that Dr. Hong had other possible alternatives to explore. Instead, he incorrectly emailed my doctor that I had refused Suboxone when he never even mentioned that to me. Then when I returned to explore Suboxone, he failed to simply say that it is a drug to assist withdrawals from opiates. The drug has no properties to treat the post herpetic pain I was suffering for over a decade. Dr. Hong seems like a nice enough person. However, his inability to be direct and straightforward with a college educated near senior patient destroyed any possibility of building a trusting relationship. If the Pain Mgmt Clinic has no possibility of how to help a patient manage pain, what exactly are they in business to do.

As someone coming from China, it's not easy to convince an elderly family member--especially with traditional Chinese thinking--to visit a doctor, but the pain had become too much for him. Dr. Ou Yang was very patient and professional. He performed a thorough initial examination and quickly identified that the pain had spread from the neck to the shoulder area. He then treated my uncle with massage, cupping, and acupuncture. After the first session, my uncle said his pain was relieved by about 70-80%, which was a huge improvement for him. Because of this positive experience, my uncle was willing to return for a second visit--something that truly speaks for itself. We are very grateful to have found this clinic, and I highly recommend Dr. Ou Yang to anyone looking for effective pain relief.

Once he does an examination and assessment, he will tell you the things needed to be worked on.
