I'd never seen an opera pasticcio before. This is where a lyricist creates an opera pinning together pieces of music from various composers and writes a dialogue. These were performed in parlors for smaller audiences as a to do. How amazing this was to hear with a harpsichord and baroque instruments for the performance! It was like being in an 18th century drawing room the way these performances were done. From Librettist Stephen Pettit and my favorite piece of music was the kiss of Vivaldi. Reed College has such gorgeous grounds and thankfully they repaired some of the ADA parking so that we did not have to do the insane walks across campus I have had to do for several musical performances I have been to here previously.

They bring me to tears every time. I cannot tell you how grateful I am to them for their passion for preserving and celebrating this wonderful music and their dedication to excellence. I have attended year after year and year after year they continue to shine. And the First Baptist church is such a wonderful venue for these performances. It's intimate and cozy. Not a bad seat in the house! Perhaps what I appreciate most about PBO is how they continue to perform with excellence while remaining approachable and unpretentious. They perform so skillfully (I know there must be thousands of grueling hours of practice behind all this) and yet they also perform with smiles on their faces, add a bit of humor along the way, and are not afraid to admit to the audience that a violin string just broke but we got this, we'll recover (as happened tonight, twice!). And I love to see the smiles on their faces when they bring a movement to a resounding finish. Mozart knew how to rock! It's so cool to see them enjoy their performance as much as we did. So they perform with excellence and chill. They are so quintessentially Portland. :) PBO is a local treasure. A Treasure. I am so grateful that they are here and I get to enjoy their performances on a regular basis. They are the epitome of how Art is essential to life. Y'all bring joy to life. Please keep it coming! I'm thrilled that I was able to catch the last performance of the season tonight. I'm already planning my tickets for next season. Can't wait!

He NEEDED to get dressed up for the opera. There was a top hat involved, it was Glorious. The productions are beautiful, the cast is top talent, the sets and costumes are fun and delightful in both color and composition, the accompanying symphony is fun and excellently conducted, and the visionary interpretation of classics that comes across the stage has twice now made me look forward to putting opera in my budget. I don't know if it's the norm for productions, but the fact that there are basic sub titles has made this accessible for anyone wanting to dip their toes in the artistic waters. Including my kids (who are old enough to sit through an opera to be fair). The attitude of the people attending is a celebration of variety. The casual to the epically dressed, it is welcoming and joyful. The extra informational talks don't hurt my feelings when wanting to understand the artistry behind the origin of the work, and it's a no pressure, high entertainment process. I love that they have seats you can return to now if you have to step out so you don't miss the show until you can get back to your spot at the appropriate time. They really do try to accommodate all ages, sensory issues, and interests. They are bringing opera to the people, and the people love it.

They were doing a lot of moves that were full of danger, yet felt safe, because clearly the performers were very in tune with each other! The evening was, very appropriately called 'Timber'. I will leave their website write up, as it gives a far better description than I would: "We are a collective of musicians who come together to celebrate great chamber music with intimate artistic experiences. Passion for great music is what defines us and Portland is our stage. Since 2009, 45th Parallel has happily demolished distinctions between old and new chamber music, bluegrass and jazz, fiddle and folk. By bringing fragmented audiences together, 45th Parallel reflects Portland's surging creative communities in fresh and imaginative ways. Founded by Greg Ewer, a violinist of insatiable curiosity, 45th Parallel stands apart from the city's other chamber groups by its borderless and unbounded innovation. Call it 360-degree programming. The city's finest musicians weave Bach and Beethoven into adventurous programs of "forbidden" music, or violin wizardry by virtuosos such as Gilles Apap and Kevin Burke. Their far-reaching collaborations also include gospel singers and Persian musicians, embracing Portland's growing diversity. But, programming aside, the performers, themselves, bring the highest levels of skill and commitment to each performance. Teaching the next generation of musicians is also critical to the group's mission. An experiment to give music lessons to students who couldn't afford them has blossomed into an urban success story, fostering confidence, community and an appreciation of beauty from both teachers and students. In the end, it boils down to this: 45th Parallel offers something both simple and complex: Music is nothing less than a marvel of human expression."
