Really REAL Vintage...!?!…read more When I was younger I used to equate the term "vintage" with old, un-stylish, sometimes mothball-smelling, second hand throwaways. I was after all, a child of the 80's and honestly, whose parent's didn't do vintage...!?! It took a very close, and very highly regarded label-loving girlfriend of mine, (who is single-handedly responsible for introducing me to the world of Prada, Burberry and moderns like Tory Birch) to re-open my eyes to this wonderful world. And how amazing the world of Vintage can be! Enter Encore Fashion Boutique. This little gem doesn't appear to be an out-of-the-ordinary vintage store at first glance. When I visited it this weekend it had a bit of a run-down appearance, a basket of children's toys outside, and windows full of sparkly jewelry, some real and some not-so-real but eye catch and pretty. Being a new member to the vintage-loving cult, and naked without my fashionable confidante, it took me a second or two to compose myself and summon the courage to enter. I didn't take much convincing though, as it was suddenly clear that what lay just inside this camouflaged facade was better than anything anyone could have told me. With the ting of the doorbell I was immersed in Gucci, Coach, Kate Spade, Caroline Herrera, Diane Von Furstenberg and Manolo. Wow. These names did take a little coaxing from the racks of garments and piles of shoes, but I was more than delighted with all of my finds. Not only was I discovering discarded Versace but it was on sale from the discounted price too. 40% off the Vintage tag to be exact. And then it happened... the find of all finds - and TWO of them to be precise. I couldn't believe it as I pulled from the rack an in-perfect-condition Max Mara woolen black skirt. Followed by a grey pleated Dolce and Gabbana knee length wonder. And both, yes both, were on sale from $198 and $149 to $20. Yes, real Dolce and Max for just $20. I MUST have done something right! On top of these finds, I also discovered a Valetino cocktail dress that still had its tags on, that had gone from 349 Euros to $189 and was now 40% off. Unfortunately not the perfect fit for my body, but I've put the word out so imagine it will go quickly. Vintage, REAL Vintage, and at real Vintage prices too - something you don't find a lot of in Vancouver's Vintage specialty stores. This store is not half as picked-over as many of the other Vintage shops seem to be in and around this city. This little gem would never have enticed me if I was just passing by, but boy, this Vintage store must be the find of the century!

I purchased a leather jacket at Encore for $195, the saleslady reduced it for me from $250…read more Encore's price tag stated an original price of $650. It is made in India, so I doubted it was worth that much. After I purchased it, I went home and searched online, where I found the same jacket for $65 - $90. Of course, there is no law against making a profit, but this store is a rip-off. Encore fooled me once, but I will never shop at Encore Fashion Boutique again. Beware!

I hope it's a reflection of things to come. Sparkle & Junebug is sadly one of only a few outlets in these parts that appears to actually clean and care for its window display and its store shelves both of which are attractive and mercifully uncluttered. Interestingly, despite its small size, the store is airy with plenty of room to look and examine, which shows what one can do with a bit of design effort. The proprietor appears to have a genuine affection for children, girls particularly. I was pleased to find a wide and varied assortment of reasonably-priced sparkle wear for three-year-old who is about to be displaced by a probably rather unwelcome baby brother courtesy her new stepmother. Yes. We felt a bit of bribery might inspire good relations. Happily, if more is required, as one suspects it might be, there is plenty of good boodle here - lace party dresses fit for royalty as well as tasteful child jewels. For a modest $20, I trousered an excellent diadem hair comb, which should assure her ladyship's status as daddy's wee princess for some time to come. It was a relief to be helped rather than mauled by English-speaking sales personnel. The person who attended was both knowledgeable of the modern little girl's secret heart and genuinely helpful. I was especially pleased with the small cloth bag provided for the gift instead of wrapping paper. The only thing missing is a selection of cards appropriate for children but these are now surprisingly hard to come by. My only grumble is that I have only the one female child for whom such purchases may be sought. I shall have to find excuses for return visits. Highly recommended.

But guess what it's still super busy??! And why? Because they have very stylish clothes at affordable prices. The quality isn't always great, but I've purchased quite a few pieces and get compliments on them all the time. I especially love their fall/winter coats.

They admitted their inventory system has discrepancies with their website but my purchases were bought 4 months apart and they still have not resolved the same issue which is Unacceptable. I would avoid Active Baby as you can potentially miss out on sales from other stores (especially during big sales like Black Friday / Boxing day) while waiting for shipments that never arrive and you're left empty handed. The salesgirl showed me some very cute outfits and I absolutely loved them. However, in my experience with children's clothes, I know they don't usually last long (either get stained or the kid grows out of them too quickly) so I'm very reluctant to spend lots of money. But... the quality of these clothes is very high compared to other stores I've been to so I didn't mind to fork out the extra cash for something really beautiful. The salesgirl was very friendly and helpful, showing me their selection of dresses and shoes and even offered to gift-wrap the present for me when I finally selected the outfit I liked most. Nice Clothes, but Poor Service…read more I stopped in to find special-occasion dresses. They were out of our sizes, so I asked if there was a way to be alerted when new stock arrives. The manager's response: "No. People just know to come in at the start of the season." I asked when that would be, and she said, "August and February." We need dresses sooner, so I apologized but asked if she knew where else I might find them. She gave a tight smile and said, "No, there really isn't anywhere else around here that sells high-end. You'd need to look online." I left, walked east on Broadway for 30 seconds...and ran right into Sparkle and Junebug, which has beautiful, well-made children's clothes. I found several dresses with the help of a friendly and efficient sales associate. It's impossible that the Babes on Fourth manager didn't know about this neighbouring boutique. Maybe she just didn't want to send me to a competitor, but she lost a potential customer and a significant sale as a result. (As Julia Roberts would say, "Big mistake. Big. Huge!")
