Ebeneezer's Kebabs & Pizzeria - Naan bread and Chicken Curry

The Chicken Tikka Masala was outstanding, and we also enjoyed the Butter Chicken, Palak Paneer (spinach with cheese), garlic naan, saffron rice, and chicken curry. The service was attentive and excellent throughout the meal. Our family mentioned they visit this location weekly, so it's clearly a favorite. With many locations across HK, Ebeneezers will definitely be on our list for a return visit!

The premise for most Ebeneezer locations boils down to two questions:…read more 1) How drunk are you? 2) How badly do you want pizza / kebabs? If the answer is "a lot," then the food here might actually be worth a look. Their not so unique approach to pizza, Indian cuisine, and kebabs has garnered them enough notoriety amongst expats that they've managed to find themselves in multiple parts of Hong Kong. This location on Ashley is a relatively good one and offers seating, a clean space, and relatively good service. I wish I had better things to say about the food. Most of the Ebeneezer fame has been from kebabs, followed by Indian specialties, and pizza pies. Much of the food lacks quality ingredients I feel, which means most everything is just borderline passable; mediocre for the most part but works in a pinch. It's not all terrible though, I appreciate that they are upfront about their food and offer a speedy experience via online delivery. Service is solid for the most part, which is why I've given them the nod more often than not. It is by no means destination food, but if the cravings are there, then I say have at it. Don't expect much and all should be okay.

Ebeneezers did not live up to the Hong Kong hype. I was only in the city briefly and figured I'd…read morestop by the local Ebeneezers for a quick lunch. It was a decision I quickly came to regret. The man who took our order appeared to be the owner, but acted like he would rather be quite literally anywhere else than serving us. Like seriously, I haven't been served that rudely in ages. It was particularly striking considering how pleasant the other places we went in Hong Kong were. Now let's talk about the food. Ebeneezer's is, by design, a cheaper fast food type place. By no means did I expect to be wow'd by the food, but that's (supposed to be) part of the charm. I didn't expect, however, to be genuinely grossed out by it. The lamb kebab was suspiciously... un-lamb-like, and the biryani was little more than average. The single samosa we ordered was a high point, but somehow took a full 20 minutes to come out. All in all, this Ebeneezer's was sad. It was saved a tiny bit by the fun hustle and bustle of its location (hence the two stars) but otherwise it was a let down.

Ordered the chicken variant with spicy sauce, and would definitely return here again and again with friends! Hope they had a location here in the States! Today, when my usual to-go falafel place in Hong Kong was closed, I walked down a few more steps and ordered a falafel wrap takeaway. And I asked him to pack me a spicy sauce on the side. The taste levels of some of what I ate today - barf! Attitude levels - well. He asked me what kind of a sauce. I said spicy, AGAIN. Without reciprocating his attitude. He asked me again, what kind - yoghurt, garlic, chilli? I should've taken a moment there and ran! I don't remember eating spicy yoghurt dips at any Middle Eastern places I've been to, but I calmly responded chilli. The lady in the kitchen just brought the wrap out, and when the owner(?) reminded her of chilli sauce, she took that plastic squeeze bottle that looked like ketchup. I consoled my self saying they must know better than to use ketchup in a falafel wrap. Especially when I've asked for a chilli sauce. A grumpy child all the way back walking home and then I open my wrap to see what looks like ketchup, no kidding. It tastes like ketchup, no kidding. Even my five years old could taste that. No lining of hummus, a very dry wrap. Pre fried cold falafels. I rarely, rarely, rarely call back. And I'd paid cash so nothing to gain there, but ketchup, for Christ's sake! Calling the place, he calmly repeated again that it's just their chilli sauce and they don't add sugar. Yeah, he could be speaking the truth. He might be adding four specks of chilli flakes in the ketchup and call it their chilli sauce, so technically, he didn't add any sugar! Argh, Hong Kong! Is it safe to say, "Hong Kong, I cannot take it anymore." Photo on the blog.
