Quaint tiny place. Great adana kabob. The lamb chops were good as well though a bit fatty. Good service.

The man who took our order appeared to be the owner, but acted like he would rather be quite literally anywhere else than serving us. Like seriously, I haven't been served that rudely in ages. It was particularly striking considering how pleasant the other places we went in Hong Kong were. Now let's talk about the food. Ebeneezer's is, by design, a cheaper fast food type place. By no means did I expect to be wow'd by the food, but that's (supposed to be) part of the charm. I didn't expect, however, to be genuinely grossed out by it. The lamb kebab was suspiciously... un-lamb-like, and the biryani was little more than average. The single samosa we ordered was a high point, but somehow took a full 20 minutes to come out. All in all, this Ebeneezer's was sad. It was saved a tiny bit by the fun hustle and bustle of its location (hence the two stars) but otherwise it was a let down.

Thank to this chain, it makes life much easier for him and for me as there are plenty of Ebeneezer's around and they offer authentic halal. More to the turkish side, this joint mainly serves up kebabs. Think of it as a slender cousin of the mexican burrito, this goody is loaded with veggies and the meat if your choice; it is quite a well balanced meal on its own. I particular like the sauces that come along, there are 3 of them which are all mayo based. The paler one is an aioli style garlic mayo, the green one is blended with mint leaves while the red one has chili in it. All of them go very well with both greens and the meat. Other than kebabs, there are also greek salad and salads that are topped with the meats in the kebab. And thats the thing i normally go for; More fiber, less starch, the golden principle of healthy eating. For the salad, I rather like the feta cheese against the greens and the meat as the salty sharp white cubes add a slight richness to the otherwise crunchy yet unsubstantial mouthful. Also served with the same dressings for the kebab, i would recommend you not to have the sauce dressed on the leaves by the kitchen but have it separated instead since the kitchen tends to over dress the leaves and miss the purpose of a light salad. So here you go, a little taste of the middle east in the oriental town of Hong Kong. If you have friends that observe strict halal diet, this is the place I would highly recommend.

Yet still HK Style Cafes, McDonalds and other infamous street side eateries to maintain their stronghold for the hungry locals wandering during the wee hours. New Istanbul is a 24 hour spot, specializing in Mediterranean, Middle Eastern fare and certified Halal. It is mainly empty at this spot, for obvious reasons to anyone who dines here. The menu is massive for HK standards, perhaps even for Turkish / Halal places in general. Their meat platters from their rotating spits are definitely plentiful, typically served with rice, salads, and fries. Their chicken doner ($70) was just chunks of dry pieces that resembled shawarma. The Kofte ($88) was filling, but I've definitely had better in from other establishments and the same applies with the Mixed Doner ($98), which was just disappointing. I figured going with light bites such as Falafel ($58) and Spicy Hummus ($48) would resetore some faith in misaligned execution but I was wrong. Both were downright atrocious. There was a pool of oil drowning the hummus and the falafel was overfried, resembling a hockey puck. I was also surprised at the subpar pizza, also the pide and lahmacun. I still haven't found anything suitable on the menu yet. Perhaps their desserts? (i.e. sutlac?) They do take credit cards here and the mainly Nepalese staff is super friendly. Where the food fails, they shine. But that's the only reason I can muster 2 stars.

And at the time, they seemed to me like the most appetizing thing offered on the menu. I also had a canned beer to drink. The menu, btw, is on a huge banner-like tarp covering the wall, which was nice because it was convenient and also probably covered an area nobody wants to look at while eating. The seating area runs along one side of the place. It's apparently open 24 hours, or used to be; if I recall correctly, I was there around 4 in the morning. The woman behind the counter who took my order seemed friendly enough. I might've added on another .5 star for that. It's a tiny restaurant, and I did like the ambience of the place, so I'm rather torn between giving it 2 stars or 3. But the falafel were just too poor. When done at least adequately, they're delightfully crispy. These were nowhere near crispy, they were just fat little fingers of mush. Sad. The sauces in squeeze bottles, of which there are a variety that one can freely help themselves to, improved the falafel a bit, but only barely.
