One of the best dining experiences I have ever had. The menu is small compared to other restaurants in the city but don't let this discourage you, we tried several dishes and everything was absolutely delicious and well prepared. The interior of the restaurant is tastefully decorated in the way someone's kitchen or dining room may be adding to the "homey" feel. Warsaw is filled with restaurants that offer delicious and authentic food. But if you want to feel like a local, and not blow a ton of money in an establishment that couldn't care less if you were there, pay Skamiejka a visit.

For example - Slavic people from Warsaw to Vladivostok like to feast on pierogi (dumplings). There are, of course, subtle differences between Polish pierogi and Russian vareniki and you can argue about who invented what in a way just slightly less heated then solianka soup at Skamiejka. Which is hot. And tasty. But back to vareniki - they are great. Both in general as well as these particular ones in the Russian restaurant that this very review is about. Try the potato ones! Going further - bliny. I tried the savory version, which was good, but I bet the sweet ones could be even better. I'm not an expert on Russian cuisine, but for me it was the best one I had since my epic day trip to Brighton Beach in NYC. Much better atmosphere too, as Skamiejka's staff was extremely nice and helpful.

I'm not impressed. I came here spontaneously and the moment I sat down and looked through the menu,…read moreI felt like leaving (but I didn't because I felt embarrassed). For starters - the prices are absolutely ridiculous and the owners should be ashamed of themselves. Taking the location into consideration, this place shouldn't charge 30+ pln for a dish. It's not that kind of a place. But since I felt too embarrassed to stand up and walk out, I decided to order pielmieni, a type of pierogies, but Russian. They differ from Polish pierogies by size (pielmieni are at least half the size of regular Polish pierogies) and are traditionally served in broth with a size of Russian mustard and/or cream. For the price of 23 pln, I got in a bowl of ridiculously overpriced pielmieni that I am going to rate as "meh, I've had better". They were average, mediocre.. And the broth was close to tasteless and looked borderline nasty. I also ordered a glass of their house wine since they had Georgian wines available and the price listed on the menu was 11 pln. So I was slightly surprised when I got my check and the wine was listed as 13 pln. Not cool. The only reason I'm giving this place 2 stars instead of just one is the fact that their menu, despite the ridiculous prices, offers a unique blend of far Eastern European and Caucasian cuisine as well as the fact that the waitress seemed nice and did her job properly (aside from not mentioning that the wine was more expensive than stated in the menu..) You can pay by card and the place is located right next to the "Nowolipki" tram station on Jana Pawła II. Be aware of the fact that the radio is kind of loud and the music goes from being traditional Slavic sung in Russian to regular Western mainstream pop songs. I won't be coming back.

Here, that means the Ukraine, Russia, Azerbaijan, etc. The waitress was quite attentive, and the place was fairly packed - though it *is* small. There was outdoor seating too, though we opted out because it was raining. Ambiance and service I'd give a 4.5/5. I ordered plow (pronounced pl-oh-v) from one of the -stan countries: it was like a cross between paella and Moroccan cous-cous. It was a bit greasy for me, didn't really resemble the photo on the sign, and my husband claimed the lamb tasted like pork, but I was content with it. He ordered a meat pasty, which was bigger than he expected, and an order of dumplings called masty. The beer was decent, he said. Overall, I'd give the food a 3.5/5.

Upon entering, you'll see the extensive menu on the wall. Fortunately, it's translated in English and the staff that takes your order at the cash register booth speaks some English as well. Once you order, they give you a buzzer to let you know when it's ready for pick up at the kitchen window. My husband and I ordered a couple bottled fruit beverages, an espresso, mushroom and sauerkraut pierogis, a side of cream spinach and blueberry and apricot pancakes for 53 PLN or about $15 US! The quality didn't compare to the Michelin Star, Muzealna, we had the day before, but we appreciated the simplicity of our last meal before leaving Poland. The women's uniforms in the kitchen and how they serve food through the window is reminiscent of the communist era. In fact, the design of the restaurant makes one feel as if they're in a mess hall during that time. There are a few tables outside as well. Some of the older reviews cite a complicated experience with potential language issues, but that's absolutely not the case now. The wall menu has English translations, you order and pay on entering, and are given a beeper to take to your table and wait for you to be summoned to pick up your food. Basically, like any fast-casual dining experience anywhere in the modern world. It's all very cheap, and it's a good way to try a sampling of Polish dishes. However, while the food is tasty and likely authentic, ingredient quality is understandably so-so (for instance, the popular veal schnitzel is made of a pressed/formed meat patty, as opposed to an actual slice of veal). For me, it's the kind of thing you do once, but then look for better quality versions of the dishes in one of the many good restaurants around town.

The welcoming was kind of jaded, but we were hungry and had patience with the zombie-like service. All of us tried some of the different pierogi (dumplings) they offered: traditional with cabbage and mushrooms, russian style and spinach with cheese. They were all OK and my favorite were the spinach ones. To that we had beer and that was where things started to go wrong. If the food was "traditionally" Polish, so was the service, which could best be described as the one I remember from the worst restaurants during the communist time. This means a minimum of service from an uninterested person that take time. Really strange, as the waitress who served us was probably not even born at the time when that kind of service was kind of common in the eastern countries. One of my friends discovered the opened plastic cover of a toothpick in his beer, and we let the waitress know as soon as we managed to get her attention. Without a flinch, she mumbled something about crediting the beer and just left, taking his beer with her. When we saw her again, we were still a little uncertain about her first comment so we asked, with the intention of ordering a new beer for my friend - but we never got that far. She just repeated that the beer would be credited and left before we had the chance to ask for another beer. As the food was OK, I hope the mishap with the beer and service was just a bad day for the wautress, but having talked to my non-Polish guests about the Polish cuisine and hospitality, Dawne Smaki just left me with a feeling of embarrassment in front of them. There are too many good restaurants to go back.
