I've been to the main street laundromat in Quartzsite, Arizona many times.
What's going on is.... some washers dryers too, reek of perm chemical solution. Like from hair salons.
Top loaders, especially those old ones, will never remove perm chemical solution. No washing machine removes perm solution.
You can only get a small amount of it out of the towels using a large, newer machine.
The chemical is called
Ammonium Thioglycolate.
It's an extremely powerful and strong chemical that curls hair in salons.
It's odor is like nothing else.
Very distinct odor.
Think dead SKUNK.
How do I know?
Because I'm a hairdresser, 27 years now.
Fast forward to the innocent person that comes along, (me) who uses a top loader for some light laundry.
My stuff came out smelling like perm solution.
Really super strong after the dryer, especially.
I was like, ("hmmm, this sure brings back memories of when I did perms!") It is a horrendous stench.
Incidentally, I don't wear a perm. I have short, grey straight hair. And I'm long retired from doing these services.
So, I knew right away where the odor was coming from.
This laundromat's machines are infected with the perm chemical, at least the ones I used, and probably others.
So, I reported it to management.
I asked for a credit for a rewash tomorrow, since they were closing.
Before I could even let him smell the clothes and explain further.... he jumped down my throat faster than Roadrunner darting from Wile E. Coyote!
He barked he'd give me the refund but I would "be barred forever from coming back."
He said further "too many people are doing this to him" and he "doesn't play that game."
Anyway....
He was visibly angry and I told him, no, to keep the $3. I wasn't interested in being barred from coming back.
I'm almost 73 years old.
I don't play the "threat" game.
(Except if I get barred from heaven, then I'm going to get very concerned.)
One thing he said though that was interesting ... Was the fact that "too many people" are asking for a refund after washing and drying their clothes.
Well, it doesn't take a rocket engineer to see what's going on.
(No, people aren't trying to get a free wash, as he indicated.) Oh, brother.
It's more like, people are getting stinky clothes from the washers and dryers.
And management is not willing to investigate.
Anyway.... I took my perm infected laundry & washed it at another place.
I was grateful that the chemical came out and didn't ruin my stuff. Only one of my garments retained the perm smell.
I will offer this advice... salons in the area need to get their own dedicated washers and dryers.
Or.... they're going to continue to infect these machines with perm solution .... people will complain and stop going....you will have to close down.
You're welcome. Happy to provide my advice free of charge :)
Obviously, I won't be back and I don't recommend.
