A benefit of this club is occasional text messages about upcoming special events. One such event was being sponsored by one of my favorite cigar brands so I asked my cigar-loving friends if anyone else was interested and one of them agreed. We decided to just meet there on the day of the event. I was a little surprised when I walked in and saw the store was empty, save for the man behind the counter, Steve. He must have seen the puzzled look on my face and asked if everything was OK. I asked him about the special event and he told me that was going on at their Reno store. Reno store?!? Yeah. I had no idea there was more than one. Since it was around rush hour and I was supposed to meet my friend here, I decided just to grab a smoke there and wait it out. When I informed Steve of my decision, he said their other store was "just down McCarran." I replied my need to relax with a good cigar far outweighed my desire to play Russian Roulette on the streets at rush hour. We both chuckled and Steve showed me to the humidor. I quickly picked out a few cigars from the beautiful assortment in their humidor, including one from my favorite brand. Once I paid, I settled down in a very comfortable overstuffed recliner and went through the ritual of lighting my cigar. I also took a minute to text the change of events to The Boss who responded she might drop by the store, too. She doesn't smoke cigars, but doesn't mind the smoke and ambience of a good cigar lounge. My friend arrived a little later and had the same reaction I did. When Steve delivered the "bad" news and offered to give him directions to the Reno store, I added it was "just down McCarran." Steve snickered and I explained the inside joke to my friend. A little while later, The Boss arrived. By this time, my friend and I were sitting in the lounge area enjoying a smoke with Steve. She say down in the recliner next to me as ked for the details of this change. I told her what had happened and it was my friend's turn to point out the other Ruiz store was "just down McCarran." This was how the rest of the evening went. We weren't the only people who thought the event was at the Sparks location and the "just down McCarran" joke lasted well into the night. A couple of other guys made the same decision we did and just stayed. Soon there was lively conversation amongst people who were, just a few minutes prior, complete strangers. That's the magic of a good cigar lounge. This is a local "chain," if you can call two stores a chain, and they stock a great selection of brands and include some hand-rolled ones made here in Reno. The prices are as reasonable as you will find anywhere in the area and the atmosphere can't be beat.
