Very interesting state park with some amazing history. Volunteers were present to give maps and information on the area and history. Well maintained. Placards throughout with information.

I am sure over the decades that I have driven by this place hundreds of times. This state park is just south of I-94 near Lake Mills. We were taking the backroads home to Madison and so we swung in to see the park. We already had the state park pass for 2023 so we were good to go. We read a few of the plaques and signs and wandered onto the site. I did learn a few things about the Native American people who lived here and something about the structures. This state park is unique and somewhat small compared to most of the state parks that are more about scenic beauty so for some like us it was just a short visit.

A hidden gem in Wisconsin! A very rich history to this post. I was utterly fascinated. Visited in December and I want to return in the summer to see the area in a different season (and spend more time with the markers!

Loved doing the short Easter day hike at Aztalan State Park. It has so much rich history and I learnt a lot about the early native American settlements there. It has dog friendly areas, so we loved that we could bring our furry 4 legged friend. Highly recommended for someone who wants to learn about the history of this piece of land.

This is a nice little state run park. Entry is $8 per car on an "honor system" meaning there's a box near the entrance where you put your money. Kind of different, but hey whatever works. Once you get in there's a little road leading up to a parking lot about 1000 feet from the Crawfish River. Along the way you'll pass another parking lot where the information trailer. We didn't go inside there so I can't speak on that. Once you're parked there's really not too much to do here except walk around and take in all the green. Coming from the Inland Empire where it's desert brown 90% of the year I thought it was so nice to be surrounded by actual vivid color. The cool thing about this park is that it was once home to one of the earliest settlements in North America and was abandoned in 1200-1300 AD. There are three mounds on the property, one of which has been completely reconstructed, along with some stockades (the poles you see stuck in the ground). Overall, Aztalan State Park probably wouldn't be a must visit destination for me but it's cool to visit once knowing the history of what was once here.

    Family affair.

A very simple but beautiful state park. My husband and I really enjoy museums, so I liked that we were able to not only hike around the park, but stop and learn a bit about the history of the area along the way - I only wish the museum in town had been open as well! It's not a large park, so there's only so much you can do here - I would actually enjoy stopping back to this park for a picnic - they had lots of tables and benches available for use.

Description of the Aztalan Native American society

Holds reconstructions of mounds and stockades of a Middle Mississippian mound settlement which existed from about 1000 to 1100 CE, thought to be related to the Cahokian society near East St. Louis. There are some pamphlets describing various parts of the settlement. Some of the explanatory signs have been defaced, others have been affected by the elements and are no longer readable, but the site itself is worth a visit if you are interested in early Native American culture, and especially so if you are interested in mound-builder culture. The museum just to the north of the park is also worth visiting to see some Native American artifacts excavated from the site and also some period pieces from the pioneer town of Aztalan which existed from around 1840, thrived for a while, got bypassed by the railroad, and finally dwindled away to nothing by the early 1900s. A state park car sticker is required to visit the park, and can be purchased at the park for a daily visit. Check the website http://dnr.wi.gov/topic/parks/name/aztalan/ for hours and state park car sticker fees.

Nestled up in McHenry County on Elizabeth Lake this nature preserve has 2 miles of trails with views of the surrounding 345 acres. I took a photo of the map but their website also has a nice one posted there as well. I wish the trails went all the way around the lake but due to the makeup of the ground/marshy area, preservation efforts, etc. the trails are all on one side of the preserve. It's a lovely setting with a large variety of wildflowers, prairie grasses, plants & trees to take in and the songbirds were in full effect on our visit. There are no restroom facilities here so plan accordingly. The trails are a mowed path with a few footbridges so if it has rained recently the paths could be wet/muddy, especially in the shady areas. We had to turn back twice due to areas that were too wet/muddy to get through in the footwear we had on but would have been doable with hiking footwear. We still enjoyed most of the trail with me in my sandals. There is seating near the parking lot at the overlook/entrance area but no other benches along the trails...but with just 2 miles of trails not really necessary for most.

Beware of ticks in the warmer months. The grasses usually prevent it from getting too muddy. The trail is pretty well maintained and the map is available at the beginning of the trail so you can choose your loop.

There's a huge rock formation that definitely catches your eye, but the path leading up to it isn't well paved. You'll need to navigate through some tall brush if you plan to climb up. I wouldn't suggest attempting it unless you have proper shoes and decent balance (or a good core!). We saw a few adventurous teenagers make the climb, though. Aside from that, there are several nearby trails that are much better maintained and perfect for a casual walk or light hike. Overall, it's a nice county park with plenty of parking spaces to explore, especially if you're in the area and want a bit of fresh air and nature.

We parked at Pop's Knoll which has a gravel parking lot for about 20 vehicles. About 100 meters from the parking lot is an area with a covered shelter with picnic tables and a toilet room. What really surprised me about this park was how well the trails were maintained and marked with numbers so you have reference points to know where you are on the park map. Consists of multi-use trails for hikers and horseback riders, as well as hiking trails for pedestrians only. A good mix of trails through corn fields, wooded areas, and grassy paths along streams. Dogs are allowed but must be leashed at all times. I highly recommend.
