Dinner for one at Two Fat Indians. I walked in to the busy restaurant on a Tuesday night and managed to get a table at a booth. The service as I entered was quick, pleasant and helpful. I didn't feel awkward sitting there alone which I have done in other restaurants, so I was instantly at ease. I started with popadoms and mango chutney (not complimentary). The popadoms were fine, but the mango chutney was very sweet and thick and didn't taste home made, not unpleasant, but certainly not the best I have tried. For my main I had the fish madras, mushroom rice with a garlic nan. I think I would have been happy with just the rice, which was delicious! The fish madras was not outstanding with quite a strong fish taste. The fish itself was overcooked and quite chewy, whilst the sauce seemed somewhat lacking in depth of flavour (perhaps overpowered by the strong taste of fish). The garlic flavour on the nan tasted more Italian than Indian, but it worked well enough with the curry. I didn't manage to finish my meal as the fish madras really didn't seem worth the effort. The service was good and the atmosphere was lively. The decor was clean and modern, but the food was a little mediocre. Not bad, but just not memorable.

The space felt light and airy, with plenty of room, along with a classy ambiance. Of course I had to try the Mango Lassi sprinkled with pistachio, which was a combination you wouldn't expect, but was surprisingly delicious together. The Mango Lassi was perfectly thick, fruity, smooth, while the pistachio was delicate and nutty. I ordered the from the Bombay Tiffin Service, selecting the Tradies Tiffin. This consisted of 4 separate tiers of meat, vegetable, carb, and naan bread. I was able to request Lamb for the meat. The Lamb was melt in your mouth tender in a well seasoned sauce. Another tin container had Bhel Puri which was a tasty cold and crunchy concoction of puffed rice with peanuts, pomegranate, tomatoes, onion, lime, as well as a bit of tamarind and green chutney. I really enjoyed this, as it was light, refreshing, full of bold flavors. This meal also came with Lentils, which was cooked well and hearty. Service was solid. Our waitress was welcoming and helpful with the menu. Pricing was very reasonable. I would consider returning to try the Lamb Chops, Bombay Fish Masala, as well as the Rose & Cinnamon Lassi.

So when I spied the neon sign of Mama's Buoi (heh) glowing down Postal Lane (between H&M and Myer) I made a beeline in to try them out. As soon as I saw the menu I realised I had done this all wrong. I came here to dine alone for lunch at a place full of deliciously tempting dishes and cocktails. It's possible I should have come at night, but at the very least I should have come with more diners. The fit out is vibrant and the vibe here is going to be great in summer, with loads of undercover outdoor seating along the laneway. I grabbed a Vietnamese slaw salad with BBQ prawns. Flavours were ok, nothing to rave about and I felt like it was too heavy on the bamboo shoots. That said, there was tons more on the menu that I would have opted for instead had I been there with more people. I enjoyed my experience and I'll be back again to try more.

Well, it seems as if Green Pepper is no more leaving us with only Red Pepper (which is a bit of a shame since I liked the fact that there was a Red Pepper and a Green Pepper next to each other, but I digress). Anyway, since Green Pepper is no more I had to satisfy myself with Red Pepper, which isn't a bad thing mind you, it's just that I no longer had that choice (and for all I know I could have spent two hours standing out the front trying to work out which one to go inside). Okay, this isn't your standard Indian restaurant, in that it is actually more Indian that what you tend to get when you walk into your typical curry joint. Sure they do curry, but the food was much more traditionally Indian. What caught my attention (as it always does) was the goat curry, but I was also interested in the onion salad. Turns out the onion salad is basically a single onion that has been converted into one long strip. Still, it's onion and I quite like onion. Not a bad place I have to say, not cheap, but still it was nice.

Aangan tries to do it all with an extensive menu featuring street style food "chaat", indo-Chinese food, South Indian masala dosas, goan fish curry, lots of veggie North Indian options and meat curries with choice of lamb, goat or chicken. Their beverage menu is equally extensive with various types of lassi. The typical salted, sweet and mango lassis are found on the menu but you can additionally order their mixed masala lassi, mixed fruit lassi and even jaljeera. The restaurant has an extensive wine and spirits list too. Portion sizes are large for the price you pay. Aangan means courtyard and though you enter a large enclosed restaurant there is also an attached courtyard with long tables that may be used to host functions. We ordered the chaat platter with our choice of three chaats. We got the samosa, papdi and aloo tikki chaat. The aloo tikki was the most delicious out of the three. Tender potato patty with a smoky flavour in a creamy yoghurt, tamarind and coriander chutney sauce with sliced onion, tomatoes and boiled chickpeas. The samosa filling was above average but not amazing. Papdi chaat could do with a kick to it. The goat madras curry now was one of the best curries I've had. Didn't taste like pataks. Not creamy or buttery sauce. Just a really thick masala sauce with tender pieces of goat and strong but not overpowering fllavours of mustard. The thick garlic naan was equally delicious. We couldn't have enough. Even though I was full I had to get to the bottom of the copper bowl holding the curry. I tried the masala lassi (arrived in a massive mason jar) which was as expected savoury and requires a palette that is acclimatized to drinking masala in yoghurt. The mango lassi was nice but sickly sweet. The dessert options include various flavours of kulfi, gulab jamun, carrot halwa and faluda. The faluda had a strong almost pungent flavour of rose syrup. And it was hard to finish. Should have been served in a sundae glass with a fork as the noodles were slippery. The service is polite, quick and attentive. Make a booking as the place got very full very quickly even on a public holiday. Patrons included both Indians and non Indians. They do lunch take away curry specials for 10 bucks. though some menu items can be worked on - I really enjoyed the food and service.
