Aangan is located on a street full of competing restaurants with enticing cuisines from the western and southern parts of India. Aangan tries to do it all with an extensive menu featuring street style food "chaat", indo-Chinese food, South Indian masala dosas, goan fish curry, lots of veggie North Indian options and meat curries with choice of lamb, goat or chicken. Their beverage menu is equally extensive with various types of lassi. The typical salted, sweet and mango lassis are found on the menu but you can additionally order their mixed masala lassi, mixed fruit lassi and even jaljeera. The restaurant has an extensive wine and spirits list too. Portion sizes are large for the price you pay. Aangan means courtyard and though you enter a large enclosed restaurant there is also an attached courtyard with long tables that may be used to host functions. We ordered the chaat platter with our choice of three chaats. We got the samosa, papdi and aloo tikki chaat. The aloo tikki was the most delicious out of the three. Tender potato patty with a smoky flavour in a creamy yoghurt, tamarind and coriander chutney sauce with sliced onion, tomatoes and boiled chickpeas. The samosa filling was above average but not amazing. Papdi chaat could do with a kick to it. The goat madras curry now was one of the best curries I've had. Didn't taste like pataks. Not creamy or buttery sauce. Just a really thick masala sauce with tender pieces of goat and strong but not overpowering fllavours of mustard. The thick garlic naan was equally delicious. We couldn't have enough. Even though I was full I had to get to the bottom of the copper bowl holding the curry. I tried the masala lassi (arrived in a massive mason jar) which was as expected savoury and requires a palette that is acclimatized to drinking masala in yoghurt. The mango lassi was nice but sickly sweet. The dessert options include various flavours of kulfi, gulab jamun, carrot halwa and faluda. The faluda had a strong almost pungent flavour of rose syrup. And it was hard to finish. Should have been served in a sundae glass with a fork as the noodles were slippery. The service is polite, quick and attentive. Make a booking as the place got very full very quickly even on a public holiday. Patrons included both Indians and non Indians. They do lunch take away curry specials for 10 bucks. though some menu items can be worked on - I really enjoyed the food and service. read more

So I finally took time to drive down last night with my lovely Mrs to have Indian food. I had food here after I believe over good two years. The staff was pretty welcoming and I believe well trained to look after the customers. We were given complimentary poppadoms with mint and tamarind sauce. We started with Gobhi Manchurian and Chilly chicken and OMG the Gobhi Manchurian was probably the best I've ever had but I was a little disappointed with Chilly Chicken as the chicken was not well prepared and tasted a little awkward. Time comes for the mains.....My Mrs ordered Tava Vegetables and for me being a meat person ordered Kadhai Chicken and disappointment comes again as the chicken was over cooked and had lost its flavour,the chicken literally looked little odd in the curry it was in,as it didn't look like mixed up pretty well with the curry. Finally we were done and couldn't finish so decided to take the rest of the food in the takeaway containers as we didn't want to leave so much of the food behind because the employees looked very concerned about the quality of the food as everyone asked "how's the food ? And we obviously didn't want to be rude and say something which gets us involved in even longer conversation". We had Paan in the end and it was probably the best thing which could make us forget about the bad taste of the food:) Not to forget the pricing : Literally a Rip-Off !! For 2 people almost $100. Visited Aangan, Clayton today after couple of months and was totally disappointed by their waiter services and the quality of food. The waitress attitude was such as if she is being forced to work, ordered for the salad and pickle but got the same when I was about to finish my meal. I have been there before couple of times but now the food quality has also degraded. We ordered for butter naan but could hardly see any butter in it, also it tasted raw and were not fresh and hot. Similar experience we had with their Laccha Paranthas. The Gulab jamun, which used to be my family's favourite desert there, did lack taste and was not fresh. The fresh Paan also was not fresh and gave the feeling as if refrigerated for a couple of days. read more

Had a strong referral to come here from a friend. Was not disappointed. Their butter chicken is great. Also recommend their chilli chicken. Their entree sizes are huge so don't order to much! As for a drink get their Indian beer and also mango lassi - yum! read more

Wow, we walked into this restaurant with no expectations and were blown away. We parked on Barkly Street looking for something to eat at 2:45pm on a Sunday. We knew we would find it difficult to get a meal at that time, but we were starved! Most restaurants were closed or full, but the staff at Aangan were very welcoming and happy to seat us even though the kitchen was due to close. The menu is very interesting with a range of Indian dishes from all regions of India plus an Indochinese menu as well. There are heaps of vegetarian options so we were happy. We started with the biggest Dosa I've ever seen, filled with diced fresh onions and mashed potato curry. It was a really yummy start to our meal. Our entree was Masala Puri, these hollow balls filled with chickpeas, potatoes, tamarind and mint were a taste sensation. This dish alone is worth a return visit. We also had Matter Mushroom (curry) with saffron rice and raita. An extremely yummy meal and very well priced. In a competitive strip with 15 restaurants, 10 of which are Indian, we were very happy that we wandered into Aangan. read more

The best Indian resturant in melbourne. Food was amazingly yummy and we ordered too much I guess for three :) We had the mixed fruit lassi and was much better than any lassi I ever had. Have been a massive fan of Indian food for over 35 years, my favourite restaurants ranging through The UK, India, Sydney and Perth. Tried plenty across Melbourne and Aangan has come out on top of the pile. The Masala Dosa is simply the best I have had in Australia and the Vindaloo was to die for. every dish that came to our table was fresh, aromatic and delicious. Good food, but poor service. Too much crowd doesn't mean your service can be poor..Make sure to book if you are planning for a weekend and still expect to be waiting for 10-15 mins. The food was alright but the service was terrible. We booked a table for 5 at 7:30pm, however even though we had reserved a table we were made to wait over 20minutes. And when we finally got a table we were seated at a table that only sat 4 people. The fifth person has to sit on a chair in the aisle near the entrance when there was not enough room. Everytime someone walked passed they knocked into the person in the aisle and it was not a pleasant experience at all. There was lots of people trying to squeeze past as it was the entrance and staff were trying to get in and out. We were not happy. If there was no room and tables available due to the dinner rush they should not have made the reservation and told us upfront that there was no capacity, that way we could have gone somewhere else or come another day. It used to be the best Indian restaurant in Melbourne for long time. But not any more. As a regular customer I was very happy with both food and service but they managed to go down words pretty badly. Food is not as tasty as used to be and strange enough it gives my whole family stomach upset from last few times. Service is worst. Very dirty and unhygienic place it has become. What a shame money and fame changed passion for food. read more
