Beware! Avis scammed me out of $4,000!
I rented a car for 3 weeks from Avis. I declined the ~$70 per day insurance. The car I was given was in very poor condition: lots of body damage, missing door seals making it very noisy on the highway.
The agent told me that the car was in poor condition and not all the damage was logged and suggested that I could take pictures but it wasn't completely necessary because they were aware of the state of the car.
It was very late in the evening and I was exhausted after a long day of travel so I foolishly didn't take any pictures.
When I returned the car I was billed $4,000 for a variety of tiny dings around the car that were very clearly related to a variety of small incidents, no doubt over the lifetime of the car.
I did appeal this. The appeal was denied on the basis that without pictures I couldn't prove that the damage was preexisting. I asked for any pictures of the car before I rented it so that I could show the damage _was_ preexisting, but was ignored. I also asked if the appeal staff could talk to the agents in Geneva familiar with the car. I was ignored again.
Overall, I had a very sub-par car for my rental period and then was basically scammed out of $4,000. Needless to say that I will never rent from Avis again and I'd definitely recommend avoiding them. read more
