I booked a car with Europcar through Expedia in January of 2025. The car rental was for the last week in June 2026. The rental agreement could not have been clearer. I was to pay $428.28 USD for the week when I picked up the car. There was no reference to payment in Swiss Francs. When I picked up the car in June, Europcar charged me 379 CHF (I now suspect the equivalent value of $428.12 of Swiss Francs in January 2025). That sum (379 CHF) converted to $479.93 because of the devalued dollar. Now, I can well understand having to pay in Swiss Francs if my contract called for payment in Swiss Francs, and I would have done so without a thought. But my contract was in US Dollars only; there was never a reference anywhere in the contract to Swiss Francs; and I never agreed to pay Swiss Francs. Both Europcar and I agreed in a binding contract for payment in USD of $428.12. Long story short, I was taken for $50 dollars. This is a relatively small amount, but it is the principal of the matter, and this speaks volumes about the character of this company. I expected Europcar to be something much more than an extremely small and petty enterprise. Very disappointed! read more
