ABSOLUTE SCAM - Predatory Practices and Fraudulent Charges! Avoid at all costs!
If I could give zero stars, I would. Do not rent a car from Avis at the Vienna Airport (Schwechat). In fact, be warned that almost all the car rental agencies at this airport seem to be running fraudulent operations, but Avis is particularly egregious with their deeply deceptive and predatory tactics.
You will think everything is fine and your account is completely settled when you return the car. Then, months--or even over a year--later, they will completely blindside you by sending a third-party debt collection agency after you for fabricated, retroactive charges.
They deliberately wait to resurface closed accounts, using this delay to exploit the fact that customers no longer have immediate access to their travel records, contracts, or receipts to defend themselves.
Here is exactly how they operate their scam:
* Deceptive Toll Charges (Maut): The staff at the desk will explicitly assure you that tolls are covered and included in your rental, only to retroactively charge you for them long after you have left the country.
* Blatant Price Gouging for Damage: They will attempt to charge astronomical amounts--often ten times the standard market cost--for minor, everyday wear and tear, like a simple stone chip (Steinschlag) that you may not have even caused.
* Bogus Administrative Fees: Even if an underlying traffic violation is paid immediately, they tack on massive, unjustified "administrative fees" and send the matter straight to a hostile collection agency without ever reaching out to you directly to resolve the issue.
They will smile to your face, tell you everything is covered, and then harass you with aggressive debt collectors long after your vacation is over. I am reporting this behavior to the European Consumer Protection authorities (Verbraucherschutz). Save yourself the massive headache and look for alternative transportation, as the rental counters at Schwechat are running rampant with these fraudulent practices. read more
