    (4) ~ very good overall car & service. We tend to like Avis b/c they seem to have better GPS options when traveling to new locations.

We drove around town, visited picturesque fishing villages (Quidi Vidi, Petty Harbour, etc) and spent a nice weekend on the Trinity Peninsula. Of course we only scratched the surface of Newfoundland and weren't anywhere near Labrador. We arrived mid-evening and were efficiently served by the guy at the Enterprise counter near baggage claim. I headed straight there before our bags came out and were able to pick them off the carousel as we were heading out. We also got a price break on our rental as our reserved size of car wasn't available, while gladly accepting one of the options they had left. The only challenge is that it's a long walk to the rental car parking lot. The walk offers some weather protection is spots, but it must be one hell of a cold journey in the winter. St. John's is on the small side as a Provincial capital, which means that it was easy to get out of the airport and to where we were going (our Hotel) fairly quickly. The roads here curve and weave a lot, which makes the drive a little more adventurous. Coming back and dropping the car off was also very straightforward. The car drove well and held all of our luggage with relative ease. My only quibbles were that our car rode a little low and it was a little noisy (tire-related) while driving certain stretches of the TCH (Trans Canada Highway). I had previously heard stories about low car availability and inconsistent service at the St. John's Airport regarding many rental companies, but I can honestly say that our rental experience was very good and went off without a hitch.

Yet, due to a little curry sauce stain on the back of the minivan, they charged me $150 for it. I tried to speak to the manager Jillian about it, but she started behaving rudely and told me that the damage waiver only covers "collision damage" and hung up the call. So, I called the call center and the first representative clearly mentioned the stain should be covered by the damage waiver, and that any damage inside or outside is covered. She said that I will receive a callback from a manager about it but I never received one. So I called again after a week, and was promised a callback again but still didn't receive one. Then for the third time, I called again and explained the situation, the representative explained they might be able to do an exception and refund this one and only time, and put me on hold as she wants to contact to support and hung up on me after 2 minutes. Enterprise showed me one of the worst customer support and I am being so helpless, I had to come up here and write a review for the first time about any company. They lie to you and steals your money. If anyone is using enterprise, I want them to be aware of their lies and not fall into their trap because the customer support representatives are just irresponsible and don't want to deal with issues.

Such a scam! I had…read morebooked online with expedia at ~$22/day for one month. When I arrived to pick up the car, I kept asking about insurance, and the lady at the desk simply said insurance had been included in your booking and she had me sign a form, and I was on my way. When I returned the car, the attendant told me that there was $2000 to be paid! He explained that I had paid the rental feel, through expedia but not the insurance fee, and the insurance fee I had be charged was ~$40/day! No one had ever offered me different insurance options, nor told me there would be outstanding fees. When looking on the bill, there is a number in fine print with the fee, that was never mentioned. What a fraud of a company!

Terrible customer service, scammed and disrespected!…read more I am incredibly disappointed with the customer service I received at Thrifty in the St. Johns Newfoundland airport! The man at the counter was extremely rude and talked down to my friend and I. We booked through Expedia and we were promised a 2 or 4 door car. When we arrived the representative told us he was 'giving us an upgrade' and then proceeded to process our rental. He asked if we would like insurance (even though we told him we already had some) and told us that the insurance we had from Expedia was worthless and for the low price of $26 we would get complete collision coverage. We agreed to this one time charge, took the keys and checked out the car. To our surprise we had been bumped up to a CARAVAN. I have only ever driven small cars so was not impressed with the caravan especially driving through the winding hills of Newfoundland for the first time. After seeing that there were a number of available 4 door cars and smaller vans available we went back to the representative to discuss the possibility of renting a car instead. He told us that he was giving us a great deal by not increasing our price and that we should be happy that the price remained the same since he was giving us an upgrade to a van. After telling him that we were not comfortable parking a van or with the increased amount of gas it would use he argued with us and told us that is was no different than renting a car! He completely dismissed out concerns and talked down to us, claiming the caravan would take the same amount of gas. He then told us we were lucky we even got a vehicle, even though we had reserved a vehicle a month in advance. According to him a lot of paying customers come to thrifty having booked in advance and they don't have any cars available for them to rent. They just turn them away and leave them stranded at the airport. He then proceeded to tell us it was actually policy to give the caravans to people renting vehicles for short periods of time and give cars to people that only rent for over 3 weeks. He had been lying to us this entire time claiming the caravan was a great deal, trying to make us feel grateful for his generosity when in fact it was their policy to only rent caravans to people renting for less then 3 weeks! Our troubles didn't end there, we were charged almost double what we were originally quoted. Expedia quoted us $178 including the HST and the premium location charge. I understood that we would have an additional charge for being under 25 years old at time of rental but was expecting it to be $30 a day. After renting the car we received a bill for $329! Not only am I having to pay nearly double what I expected, the gas alone cost me $45 when I only drove the caravan for a total of 4 hours! After calling Thrifty St. Johns directly they told me there wasn't much they could do and told me the manager would call. I still haven't heard anything back from them. They are completely unprofessional, have hidden charges and treat their customers with disrespect. They hide behind their "great deals" to cover up policy made to scam their customers. I am completely appalled by the service I received both in person and over the phone, I will never rent a car from Thrifty again.

The contract clearly stated "1400 MILES". Any grade school student (or anyone using Google) can tell you that 1400 miles equates to 2250 kilometers. I returned the car having driven 1550 kilometers (963 miles) on the odometer. There was a legal contract between National Rental and me, and I adhered to my end of the deal. This National location then proceeded to charge me an overage for 150 MILES. I called National Customer Service (1-800 number) and they agreed with me. They provided me with a confirmation number and stated that the overage amount would be refunded to my credit card. Fast forward one month, and the amount had still not been refunded to my credit card. I made another call to National Customer Service (1-800 number) and they stated that while they still agreed with me, the local agent at St. John's airport refused to issue the credit. Repeated calls to the National rental location at St. John's airport (709-722-4307) were NEVER answered. While on the phone with National Customer Service (1-800 number) they acknowledged that the local agent at the St. John's airport number (709-722-4307) wouldn't even answer their calls. I expressed my frustration with National Customer Service. I turned down their offer of multiple days of free rentals, since I don't care about that - what I care about is the principle of fairness and not being ripped off by one of their local agents. National Customer service committed to investigating and responding to me within a week. I've waited over a month, and they have not communicated with me. Since you have not addressed my issue, I have followed through with my commitment to post my experience on Yelp so that other potential customers can make their own decisions about whether they should rent from National or not.
