People that have the company shirts on, just walk around looking while 75 people stand in line. We arrived in Houston IAH at 1230 am. When we were coming down on the escalator I saw the huge line to the Avis counter. All I knew was this is going to be a long wait. We waited for 2 hours to get to our turn. The only choice we had for a car was a Camaro, Tesla and Volt. This was by far the longest wait I'd had for getting a rental car. You would think that they would anticipate how many reservations they have for the day, unless majority of these people are all walk ups, which is highly unlikely. read more

My flight was severely delayed, so I couldn't pick up my original rental car from Budget (or so I thought), so as soon as I landed, I frantically made a new reservation with Avis since they were the only rental company open, according to Budget's posted operating hours even though it turns out they are the same pickup counter. Later, I found out I could have picked up my original reservation from the Avis counter--something no one told me at the time. The new reservation was more expensive, and in my rush, I accidentally set the drop-off time for 12 PM instead of 12 AM. When I went to pick up my car, I had to wait in a long line, only to overhear that they didn't even have cars in the lot, which is why it was taking so long. After finally reaching the counter, they only had electric cars left and I was sent on a wild goose chase to locate an available electric vehicle that had enough charge to even leave the lot (most were only charged to about 60%) My flight landed at 12:15 AM, and I didn't get to my nearby hotel until after 4 AM--nearly four hours later! Despite being patient and understanding about Avis's multiple mistakes (including the delay, lack of vehicles, inaccurate operating hours for Budget, poor communication which led to me paying more for a new reservation), they were completely unforgiving of my minor mistake. I even returned the car early at 6:30 PM instead of 12 AM and just waited at the airport so I wouldn't be paying even more. I picked it up at 3 AM that same day), yet I was charged an extra $96 on top of the $80 I had already paid for a single day rental. I even tried calling their customer support and sat on the home for nearly an hour...was super polite too, didn't matter. This experience was a total nightmare. Poor communication, lack of transparency, and outrageous charges--Avis failed at every turn. I'll be avoiding Avis in the future and would recommend others to do the same. read more

For starters Avis operations manager said the system has been down since 10:30pm. We landed in Houston at 12:30am. Operations manager doesn't know anything or what to do, other than to go around the big line and announce to everyone the system is down. There's no way they wouldn't know what to do when the system goes down. And by the way to have one Avis employee handle a whole single line is ridiculous. The operations manager was not behind the counter helping. And for those who did a reservation the day before will not be guaranteed a car rental. So I would say if you're planning to land in Houston at night try and rent a car with another company look at other options because Avis is not the one. read more

Couldn't get the express stuff in the app to work (it never works) so we went upstairs to the counter, saw a sign about Avis preferred but no idea where it was located so walked around for a while before spotting an employee who was able to point us in the right direction. The place is so run down; the floors hadn't been swept in probably years and part of the counter was falling off and the sliding glass doors were broken so they kept opening and shutting even though no people were going through. There was a long wait here too with just one employee and several people needing a car. But once we got to the counter it was easy enough and fast, and at least they had a car in stock! Same type we reserved even, which is not always the case. Anyway it needs some serious attention by the company to take pride in their own property, and they should fix the app issues, but we would rent with them again. read more

While I incorrectly believe myself to be of a sunny and optimistic disposition, experience has taught me to go into each and every rental car experience with the absolute lowest of expectations.* Despite all my trepidations, this was easily the quickest and most efficient car rental I've ever gone through. 1. The shuttle was right outside when we landed at the airport. 2. We got on, and my man Warren was driving us out within two minutes. 3. Upon arrival at the actual rental counters, our move is usually to have my wife get off immediately so she can get in line while I grab our luggage. We only had one bag, and so I was getting off the shuttle as she was walking through the doors. 4. By the time I caught her at the counter, I shit you not, the guy had already given her the space number and we were walking toward our car. I don't even think my wife had to show them any ID. There was no line, we had prepaid and had a confirmation number, and that was good enough for them. 5. Once we got to the car, it was clean and comfortable, with no scratches or dents we had to report to keep them from charging us later. We drove it to the booth where the guy was actually pleasant, checked our ID, confirmed the gas tank was full, and sent us on our way. I don't even think it was more than ten minutes total. And because we're in Houston, it cost us less than 25% of what the same rental would cost in NYC. I'm withholding that last star because it's still Avis which has a long history of screwing us over and I'm assuming we will be charged an extra $500 for some nonsense down the line, but I'm honestly amazed right now. _____________ *I may or may not have penned my last rental car company review to the tune of "Fuck You" by Cee-Lo. My experience with Avis all depends on not having to talk to people. When I've been able to use Avis Preferred, I'm able to check my name on the board, and walk straight in and grab my car. With a quick check at the exit, I'm out and and on the road. However, when I've had to queue in line and wait for a rep, this has been a bother. Even with a few people in line, it can take time, and the whole process feels quite bureaucratic. I also don't enjoy the random up charges to fill up fuel, etc, when you can stop by the pump right out side the airport for 5 min. Getting to and from the car rental facility is pretty smooth via airport shuttle. When you arrive, just take the escalators down. Other tricky part about my last car rental, was that when I returned the car, my final bill was about 80% more because of fees and taxes. I understand these do exist, but wish the pricing was a little more upfront at the time the reservation was made. read more

I wish I could give a lower than one star review. We flew into Houston got in after midnight and the only place at the airport open was Avis. We need the car to drive to Beaumont 90 miles and return it to Avis at the airport in Jefferson county the same day. They wanted $1,400.00. You can go online and rent one for $159 from Avis, but you have to wait an hour and a half for the rental to show up In their system. The guy then came and said he had a friend who would drive us to Beaumont for $500. it was just shady. read more

Just throw the entire location away! Let's start with the logistics of just getting the car. Our reservation and we paid for a mid sized SUV for 1am. We waiting in line for an hour, the line was so long it passed the escalators. We finally get to the counter only to be told that they do not have any mid sized SUVs and we would be upgraded to a luxury car. Normally I would not have any compliants about being upgraded. However my husband is 6'6 and and getting in and out of a car is not comfortable for him. We were offered a Tesla or a 12 passenger van, wait WHAT? We got the Tesla even though we have never drove a all electric car. The receptionist offered no instructions, the QR code provided was no longer available. We were told to just Google instructions. We retrieve the car and literally watched a YouTube video on how to work it. We were in the parking lot for at least 20 mins trying to figure out how to operate the car. This Avis is awful! I would NEVER rent a car from them again and I do not recommend them. To force technology on customers is deplorable! And to make matters worse the car was ugly and red! read more

They are 0 for 2 in both my trips to Houston in being able to 1) get me the type of car I reserved, and 2) caring at all about the fact that they dropped the ball. Indifferent staff at the preferred counter are the icing on the poor service cake. Land in Houston, use the app, Confirm my car, app tells me "YOUR CAR IS WAITING IN D4." Get on the bus, walk out there, D4 is empty. I go inside and they offer me a Mustang, a Charger, or a 10-person van. So, there goes my gasoline costs through the roof. I ask what happened to the car I had confirmed that was reported in spot D4 not 20 minutes ago, and all I get is "I don't know." Then, insult to injury, the charger is parked on the entire other side of the parking lot, no offer to bring it over, no nothing. What does Preferred even mean to Avis? Not much at IAH, apparently. I gave them a 0/10 review in the email they sent me, and I got a form letter from Avis saying "sorry you had to wait for a car. Give us another chance." Why? Avis needs to do a better job of staffing. They are aware of the car reservations for their rentals but do a very poor job of staffing. last week we rented a car from Avis in Phoenix and waiting well over an hour in line only to be told that our car was not yet ready (another additional 20 minute wait). During the wait time in Phoenix several representatives actually left. Now in the Houston line there are 4 representatives at one station, does it really take 4 reps to help one customer? Are they really this bad at knowing their job? There are only 4 stations open and the line of customers is past the escalators. why does Avis reserve real estate to so many stations without representatives? Why do the reps huddle at the far right end of the counter? Is there a piece of equipment that is single use? If so, I think a process improvement is greatly needed. Does Avis have such horrible processes that it takes over 25 minutes with each customer? We will be looking for a different car rental in the future, Avis has lost our business! Apparently Avis is not concerned with customer service and since this has happened to us at two different Avis locations, it shows the mentality of the Avis corporation towards their customers! Quick pick up and even faster return so you can get to the free shuttle to the airport. Staff is friendly and welcoming allowing you to get in and out without any hassle. Originally I got kind of a lame station wagon peice of shit.... so I exchanged it (which was easy). The new car's gas tank wasn't full when I picked the car up.... and the latch for the drop down top wasn't fully closed (that was fun finding that out on the freeway!). BUT.... Worst experience renting a car ever! I booked on Priceline for a 28 hour rental for a prepaid amount of $55. Avis charged me another $357 on top of that because their reservation was wrong, but when I pointed that out, they couldn't or wouldn't help. I had to call Priceline to try and get the situation corrected. Five days later, they still haven't returned my money and they put another hold of $257 on my account, right before the holiday weekend. Now, I'm spending time at work on the phone with them to try and get this resolved. It's been a huge waste of my time, my money, and my sanity. Rent from ANYONE else! Rent-a-Wreck is probably a better option than Avis. read more

1 Star is the minimum. Incredibly rude staff. Very unaccommodating to my wife and service animal. I should have known when they were so rude to the 2 groups in line ahead of us, refusing them service. I learned the hard way. Upon arrival, we cleaned the car in front of them, and they continued to give us a hard time about it. So we continued to clean it very throughly, despite how rude they were. They then sent us a bill for $250. If they even allow you to rent a car, as the 2 groups in front of me we're not allowed, be aware of the hidden fees and lies they'll tell to squeeze more money out of you. read more

They have a pretty serious quality control problem. The 1st car - passenger window wouldn't roll all the way up...or down. Took it back. 2nd Car, Check Oil light came on when started. Took it back. 3rd car (paid an upgrade charge) - stank of smoke and had not been cleaned. At this point it is late at night - so went to the hotel, then came back in the morning. Traded in again. Car #4 appears to be OK. While in line, there were at least 3 other customers trading in cars due to defects. To their credit, the counter staff & the security person were very friendly and helpful. I've rented from Avis for years in many different cities - this is the only time I have ever had a multiple failure. I would chalk it up to bad luck if it hadn't been for the other people in line with similar problems. read more

The lone star I'm offering is because of the manager that bent over backwards to get us a decent vehicle. However, I'm going to start from the beginning. I picked up my rental in Detroit. I was supposed to have a luxury SUV, and ended up with a GMC Terrain. Which is ok, I can live with that. Fast forward to Orlando, our rental needed an oil change. Not a problem, they said take it to the Orlando airport and they'll get us the vehicle we were supposed to have. Come to find out, Orlando lied to us, claiming all they had were vans, when in fact they had 40 SUV's in stock. They stuck us with a Mercedes work van. Last I checked I wasn't delivering packages for FedEx, nor was I trying to spread the word of Christ. After arguing for a solid 4 hours with Avis customer service and the airport, we were placed in a Jeep Grand Cherokee with a bad transmission. After returning this pile of shit to a different airport, we were given a Jeep Compass, which couldn't even make it up a damn hill. No 4wd, no nothing. FF to Houston, after driving this little shoe box from Orlando to Houston, we wanted to swap it out at the Houston bush airport. We made out good there. We ended up with a 2018 Ford Explorer. We were so excited because we finally got what we paid for. Ran great, gas mileage wasn't the best but whatever. We drove it from Houston to San Antonio, and back. Ran great the entire time. Now today, it has several warning lights, including a wrench and the airbag light. It also has reduced engine power, and it's not running the greatest. Well, we're talking to Avis at the airport again, so stay tuned to see what we end up with next... Update: we went to the Avis at Hobby Airport. By far the best experience I've had with Avis this entire ordeal. I was so pleased with how they conducted business. We're in another exploder which runs a lot better, and even better news, the customer service manager actually thought I was going to drive their car into the Gulf of Mexico. Lol read more

The counter person wanted to charge us a full extra day for showing up half an hour before noon. She was also unwavering in her stance on not getting a manager. This isn't the norm and I've, in the past had been he extra day fee waived before for longer periods. NOT AT AVIS THOUGH. Lesson learned.
