What a great experience at Avis in Tyson McGhee airport. I don't normally stick with one car rental company, but my experience today is going to make me stick with Avis. I was helped by Crystal. What a great representative to have for your company. Crystal had a way of tending to my specific needs that made me feel so valued as a customer. Literally the worst rental car experience I've ever had in my life. Over a 3 hour ordeal to get our car. And we missed precious time with family as a result. Read on for details.... We signed up for Avis Preferred through our credit card. After standing in line for 45 minutes at the Avis Preferred counter and having the reservation visible on our Avis Preferred account, we were told we were first time renters they wouldn't let us rent through the Avis Preferred Counter. We then had to go back upstairs to the other counter where we proceeded to have to wait in line for over an hour to get a car. Meanwhile if I looked around at National, Enterprise, or Hertz and all of those counters had no lines at them. I would never ever, ever rent from them. read more

Avis Rent A Car - The second line we had to stand in. - Car Rental Near Me - Alcoa, Tennessee

Oof! At TYS, Avis shares a counter with Budget, and apparently both were the popular agencies (likely also the least expensive) the day I arrived (Thursday, late afternoon). I do not think Avis nor Budget were properly prepared for the demand as the staff were limited (2 desk clerks), and coupled with archaic equipment (another location still on a dot-matrix printer) the line moved at a snail's pace and eventually stretched all the way to the far end of baggage claim. After waiting about 30 minutes, the two clerks became one, and then the counter was shut down altogether. Everyone waiting was directed to the QuickPass booth in the garage, where there was one employee and another 50-yard lines worth of customers. Yeah, not so quick. By the time I finally made it to the window, Avis was running low on vehicles, so I was upgraded to a Volvo Atlas. No complaints about the car. It was a nice, comfortable ride for the drive to Gatlinburg. And thank the Lord there was still daylight for that drive, because what should have been a simple rental pickup turned into a 90-minute "adventure". I guess the bonus throughout the ordeal was that it gave me opportunity to meet some fellow travelers to help pass the time. read more

terrible. they lied about my turn in and added two days. Their drop off system is flawed. Very nice car though.

We had a car reserved and I went to do the paperwork while we waited for luggage. There was nobody manning the desk just a sign saying to go to the Avis preferred booth at the lot. When I got there I was in the back of a long line with one person working. After 45 minutes the employee announced to everyone that you need to be a preferred member if you weren't you had to go back to the airport desk. I had singed up when we rented the car so I stayed in line. When I got to the front of the line 20 minutes later I was told that she couldn't complete the transaction and I had to go to the airport desk. I arrived there to find an hour long line. I am still in the line so I don't know when or if I will get a car but I will never reserve from Avis or Budget again, I am over two and a half hours in so far. read more

Are you kidding? Spent over 50 minutes inside the airport to then spend another 25 minutes outside in line in the garage. No one seemed to be in a hurry to take care of anyone. Frustrated read more

Avis, we need to talk. After this week's cross-country trip, I'm left wondering if this is normal service or a one-off disaster. We rented a car from the Avis counter inside Walmart in Leon Springs, Texas. I'll start with a positive note. The folks there were kind, patient, and helped clear up some early confusion on my end. No complaints with them. The trouble started the next morning when we set out for Tennessee in a heavy rainstorm. One of the windshield wipers was so worn out it smeared water across the glass like oil. Try driving 19 hours through rain with a blurry windshield. It wasn't just annoying, it felt unsafe. Once we arrived, we went to the Avis location at 4742 Centerline Dr. in Knoxville to get the wipers replaced. The guy behind the counter was polite but said he couldn't swap vehicles. Instead, he sent us next door to Pep Boys and told us Avis would approve it. Pep Boys had everything ready and were just waiting on Avis corporate to say yes. Then corporate denied it and told us to return the car. A complete waste of time for everyone involved. The employee at the Knoxville location quietly gave us a "direct line" to the airport desk and said they would swap the car there. We drove to the airport. The worker there immediately handed us keys to a new car. Except the key fob didn't unlock the car, and the car wouldn't start. The battery inside the fob was dead. So back inside we went. They gave us a third car. A white Chevy Trax that smelled like it had been used as a rolling ashtray. We pointed out the cigarette stench. The solution offered? Febreze. A couple of sprays. The smell was back before we hit the exit. So here we are, having driven halfway across the country in a car with bad wipers, and now finishing the trip back in a vehicle that reeks like stale smoke. Our clothes smell like it, too. I genuinely don't know whether to laugh or be furious. Is this what customers should expect from Avis? And where exactly do I send the dry cleaning bill? read more

Extremely slow process, 4 agents and each one took about 10 min each to process rental.

Picking up my prepaid car rental took over 1.5 hours; waited in multiple lines both in the airport and the garage. The staff were a mix of surly, mean, checked-out, or absolutely burnt out. Had a worker close the window in my face and say he didn't want to talk to me any more. Absolutely horrible experience read more

The website avis.com is in French, or some other foreign language. I don't see any place to be able to change the screen print language, either. This is very frustrating. I paid online and yet I can't just use a kiosk at the Knoxville Airport to just scan my ID, verify some information and have a lot attendant to look at my reservation information and kiosk print-out and to be able to just be shown to my car via a golf cart or something driven by the lot attendant who verified me. One guy looked like he couldn't read the key tags and couldn't figure out how to communicate with the lot attendant via his walkie-talkie and was taking forever to get one customer taken care of. The other representative, along with the first one both seemed to have bad attitudes. Avis and Budget really need to get some friendlier people to do the check in and check out positions. read more

SAF I WAS the next person in line, but my Avis app said " proceed to Avis preferred and we will get you on your way" so I stepped over to the preferred side and stood there. Chad looked up and asked "are you waiting for Avis?" ‍ "I'm standing here yes I am" He then informed me that the line I came from now with 5 other people there was where I needed to be. that is not ok!! I'd like to talk about the manager, Dane May, who made our experience with an infant and 3"2 young girls an absolute nightmare. After sitting across the lot in a rental car listening to me plead with employees for help over the reservation they never held, followed by the 6 seat vehicle I wa a given and told it was a 7 seater, followed by unloading that car into a new car and being told "oh wait you can't take that car"". Been sitting in the garage for 2 hours now. Dane May, the manager walks up, rolls his eyes and looks at me as if his world just ended because he had to do something at his job. After being asked about a discount due to the litany of inconveniences, I was told that's a "customer service problem, not mine" and to "fuck off". In short if you'd not only enjoy a terrible experience, but a manager with a mullet and a state trooper mustaches telling you to fuck off when asked for help, I'd advise against AVIS.. Dane May in particular, dollar store Benson Boone looking guy. What kind of manager tells customers who have been inconvenienced several times over 2 hours to "fuck off"? read more

Currently sitting in the Knoxville, TN airport completely stranded by Avis. My Avis confirmation was for an 11:30pm pick up with my flight info attached. I was at the counter before 11:30pm with no one in sight. Went out to the garage where another customer was also stranded. Call center couldn't help (Angelica was pleasant enough but very unhelpful.) Their advice was to come back in the morning to get the car. So I'm just supposed to sit in the airport until the morning? My hotel is 1.5 hours away. No uber willing to bring me. Shame on you Avis! Unable to rent from the other car rental businesses that were still open, as they couldn't accept walk ups at this time. Upon returning my vehicle to TYS airport I did not hear the agent telling me to move the vehicle. I did move the vehicle and the agent said what are you "fucking stupid, I was telling you to move and using hand signs." I responded that I did not hear him, I have hearing damage from military service. He continued to be rude and escalate after which he used more expletives and told me he would kill me slit my throat and bury me in the woods. I do not appreciate the experience and extreme nature with which this was handled. Andrew Elfter Avis Rental Agreement 454209140 read more

My flight was changed and the new arrival time is after the kiosk closes by 8 minutes. I called customer service and they would not give me any forgiveness even though this was out of my control. The operator in another country said what happens in the US is not AVIS's problem. He said they would not grant me any forgiveness or temporary upgrade to put the keys in a locked box even though I am paid in full. He said I could either wait in the airport 8 hours until they open or cancel my reservation. I told him I would never use AVIS again and he did not care and hung up on me. WTF? read more

I would give this rental location a no-star rating if I could. Avis needs to do something about this location! We waited over two hours to get a car, which was already reserved!! Only two employees worked the counters, and one had to return and get cars. Over 15 people were milling around waiting to get vehicles for ours. Thanks to this joke of a rental car location, we missed our dinner reservation and ended up getting to our hotel very late. Please choose wisely, and DO NOT rent from Avis/Budget at this location, as your flight time might be less than it is to get the rental car you already reserved. read more

I would rate this rental company 0 if I could. We purchased through Priceline for $132, however once the fees were included it came up to $333 for a 1 day trip in a Nissan Altima. The fees are ridiculous! Everything you add on to the trip has its own additional tax, and do not trust the refueling option; you'll get charged ANOTHER $40. Our fees came up to almost $200!!! And the customer service was horrible!! I WOULD NEVER RENT FROM THEM AGAIN. PLEASE DO NOT MAKE MY MISTAKE!!!! GO SOMEWHERE ELSE. read more

I chose the mystery car because of a last minute booking. The problem with selecting the mystery car option is that they will likely give you an EV vehicle. I was hesitant to use this company and boy was I right! If the worker asked if you want to sign up for refueling option where they do it once you return. DON'T! Just refill it yourself. We signed up for it, at a price of $2.75 a gallon. We left the car on half a tank when we returned it. All to find out they charged us $100 for gas for half a tank. When we called customer service we were told we were going to get a full refund, asked for confirmation of that and then were told we were only going to be given a 50% refund due to them having no proof of the worker signing us up for the refueling and were still going to be charged the extra $40 worth of fees because we "didn't sign up for it". This Avis is getting ridiculous. As a member of Avis President club this is extremely disappointing. For the last past 3 rentals I've booked I've had to walk a mile to get the car. All the way in Row F (last row) and outside the parking deck. The whole point of being Avis preferred is vehicles being convenient distances from the AP booth. In addition to this issue i have received a 12 passenger wagon vehicle. I walked to row F just to realize i am unable to get into the vehicle because of how close they are parked to each other. So i walked all the way back to the booth and it was closed so i continued to walk inside . When i got inside i let the customer service agent know the Wagon would not accommodate my job which has a low clearance parking deck. In addition to i am unable to get inside the vehicle. He instructed i return the vehicle in the morning for a new one. Luckily i was able to exchange the vehicle the following morning. The workers are nice but it's frustrating how they can not accommodate for advanced bookings and those with high status read more

Our rental at Tyson-Mcghee Airport, Knoxville, did not go well. After an hour-long wait to pick up our reserved car, we received a RAV4, which was ideal for our 9-day trip. As we left the airport I noticed that the tire inflation light on the dashboard was lit. After checking the appearance of the tires, I decided not to return to the airport for another hour-long wait. We arrived at our resort, and the next afternoon, when planning to drive the car, found that the left front tire was almost flat. I decided to change the wheel, and put on the compact spare. However, although the spare was in its place and inflated, THERE WAS NO JACK, AND NO TOOLS! A call to Avis Roadside Assistance gave t he response that a repair truck would be called to change the tire. I would be responsible for the cost, until I submitted a receipt, and likewise for the tire repair. The truck driver eventually called, to tell me his arrival would be delayed until after 8:00 pm, and did I have a jack for him to use? I cancelled the truck, borrowed a jack and tools from someone else at the resort, and changed the tire myself. The next day I spent the morning getting the original tire repaired and installed. The rest of the rental was uneventful, but I was driving with no way to change a tire if the need arose again. Avis Roadside Assistance called me to inquire about my welfare three times over the next three days, each time at approximately midnight--when I was asleep. So I learned a lesson: not to ignore an inflation warning light, and to check the trunk of a rental car to see if it has an inflated spare and tools with which to install it. Regardless, I consider Avis at Tyson-McGhee negligent for giving me a car in an unfit condition. As an "Avis Preferred" customer, I wondered how a non-preferred customer might have fared. read more

Very well-managed rental location. Have rented here 3 times this season and have received exemplary service every time. Received a complimentary rental of a minivan because of a mix-up and subsequent unavailability of a Full-sized van which I had reserved. We ended up renting an additional compact car at full price to accommodate our needs. It all worked out, and was a great solution by the Avis manager. Lots of smiles and pleasant employees at this location. A lot like Denver (and not like Orlando!) Keep it up TYS Avis - I'll see you again soon! read more

On a recent trip to Nashville, my flight was rerouted to Knoxville, so during my layover in Charlotte, I had to scramble to find a rental car to drive from Knoxville to Nashville when I landed. Thankfully, I was able to successfully book a compact rental via the Avis website for pick up at the Knoxville airport. I've rented vehicles at other airports before, and I have to say that the convenience of renting, and returning, at both Knoxville and Nashville airports is top notch. After landing in Knoxville, grabbing my luggage, I walked to the rental counter, which is also conveniently located right behind baggage claim, and was greeted by Lorena. She was able to quickly locate my reservation, and while she was getting everything set up, engaged me in friendly conversation, for which I appreciated. As mentioned before, I requested a compact rental car, and she did try to up-sell a mid-size for which I declined, but as it turned out, that rental had to go to New Jersey, so she gave me a mid-size at the same cost of a compact. The entire process from counter to walking outside to pick up the vehicle took about 10 minutes. I also appreciated the ease of extending the rental, as I had initially booked it for 1 day but decided to keep it for the entire stay. I was able to call an 800 #, provide my information, and extend the rental through the automated system. The car I was given was a newer model Kia something or other. I've never driven a Kia before, but I was really impressed with this particular model; it was a great ride, very sleek, and clean. I really enjoyed driving it for a few days! read more

I was headed to the Avis line in the baggage claim area, when a RUDE customer cut me off and rushed ahead of me. I waited patiently until it was my turn. While I waited, I watched the Avis agent as she skillfully dealt with the RUDE customer. It was clearly difficult, but Jennifer handled it with class and grace. Once it was my turn, I shared with her how well she appeared to have done with the RUDE customer. She had also noticed that customer cut me off. Nonetheless, Jennifer was so kind, polite and helpful to me as well. She is a true credit to Avis. Thanks for making my rental car experience easy and fast! read more
