This rental car experience was completely avoidable by the company. Our reservation for a 12-person…read morepassenger van was booked months in advance, as we and many family members were flying in for our daughter's wedding. As we waited by baggage for the family members to arrive who were sharing driving duties with us, I was watching how slow it was taking them to process customer after customer. The rest of the desks (Hertz, Enterprise, Dollar) were all empty and speedy. So I preemptively got in line early (.5 hr before scheduled pick up), trying to plan to reach the front of the line as our extra drivers arrived...to save time (which, even as I'm typing this is hilarious, because that was never...never never ever going to happen). I did plan it perfectly, they arrived as I reached second in line, hugs and hellos, and as we stepped up to the desk, we were informed there are no passenger vans available. And already a half hour in, we stood at that desk for another hour and forty minutes as the staff scrambled, ran out to the garage and back, waiting for management to respond to them to try and make something happen. We learned that there was really no inventory of cars for the reservations made. We watched the line behind us grow from 10 to about 50 people in that time. Shout out to Zeke, Whitney, Aman & Elizabeth. They were all left to deal with angry and frustrated travelers with no cars to give them, no authority to make any decisions, no support, and short staffed inside and outside. Whoever "Bob" is left them all high and dry and was not reachable or responsive, but apparently the only person who could authorize anything. In our case, it finally ended up resulting in two 7-passenger cars after almost 2 hours. When we received them, they were dirty, with gum stuck to the cargo space carpet. I have photos of a super long line of people, but that has already been posted by others. They completely overbook with no regard for arriving travelers. My daughter lives here so we will most likely be renting again. But I will never ever rent from this Avis/Budget location. In fact, I will likely stay away from Avis/Budget anywhere because of the experience at this location. Zeke, Whitney, & Elizabeth need a raise and a vacation.

Easy and simple. After a belligerent customer tried to parse and debate the language of contract terms, a rep named Abbas got to us and was super friendly and helpful. Gave my reservation package that I confirmed a couple days prior, received my car, and learned it was a level better than expected. Very helpful for this trip. A quick four minute walk across to the parking facility and I was literally on the highway within 20 minutes of stepping up to the counter. Vehicle was clean and ready to go. Minor scuffs in a couple spots, which is normal for a rental in my experience. Ran well and like the drive for a large SUV. Return exchange was super smooth with no lines. The Budget rep was friendly, and I saw the folio receipt in my email within minutes. We were in line for flight check-in within 10 minutes of pulling in to return the car. Reviewed my receipt and no surprise fees. Bonus points from reserving from my Alaska Airlines account, too. Boom. I'll use these folks again next time.

I booked a car with Dollar when I purchased my United ticket though the United website…read more I was puzzled when, on arriving in Albany, there was no kiosk for Dollar along with the five or so other car rentals. It was only then that I found out that Dollar is not located at the airport but is ten minutes away and requires a shuttle. I called the shuttle at waited ten minutes for it to show up. The rest of the process was smooth. I was concerned about returning the car to the location and catching the shuttle at 6 am for my morning flight, but that went smoothly too. There are two issues that resulted in my low rating. The first is the off airport location. This is not made clear at the time of the reservation. I would expect both Dollar and United to have been transparent on that point. Second, the car rental location is understaffed. There is often only one person checking in customers and driving the shuttle. You can see how this could be an issue. However, the service was friendly and I had no issue with the car.

WORST CUSTOMER EXPERIENCE I HAVE EVER RECEIVED. HERTZ IS RUNNING A SCAM!!!…read more I was in a rush and forgot to check the passenger side door of the car I rented a couple of weeks ago. My son saw a ding in the passenger side door shortly after we arrived to our location. When we dropped the car back to the rental location, I asked to speak to someone about the ding as it had not occurred during our rental time yet I was concerned I would get charged. The agent said 'Do not worry about it'. A few days later, I get an email from Hertz saying I am liable and will be charged. I called immediately and the customer service lady said 'Do not worry about it'. And then a week later, I receive a bill for over $1K!!!!! No conversation, no discussion. ABSOLUTE INSANITY. HERTZ IS RUNNING A SCAM!!!! The least they could have done is had a discussion with me so I could explain the details. There are way too many rental companies out there to be treated like this. GROSS.

They assured me that they stayed to cover customers whose flights were delayed- that peace of mind was important, although we didn't need to rely on it after all. The rental pickup is a short walk across the street from baggage claim. The agents were friendly and efficient. Did not try to sell me things that I didn't want. They provided an adapter for my phone cable and helped me make sure I was able to hook into my phone guidance before leaving. The car was clean and in excellent condition. Return was equally quick and easy. Good price and great experience.

The next day, I discovered that one of the tires was underinflated and had a slow leak - so Budget had basically sent me out in an unsafe vehicle. After AAA came and put the spare tire on, I drove back to Albany for a replacement vehicle. Rather than an apology, the Budget reps in the garage offered only a sarcastic laugh when I said I would be asking Budget to waive fuel charges, due to the danger and inconvenience Budget had caused me. Although I returned the replacement car with a full tank, Budget charged me an additional $138 anyway. Apparently, Budget employees don't check the fuel gauge on returned cars, and I didn't have the "time-stamped documentation" their online Customer Service demanded as proof. When I asked them how much my tolling charges were, they said there was nothing in the rental agreement about my enrolling in the toll program, though I had confirmed my enrollment with two on-site Budget employees. (Note: An additional $28.16 charge from Budget later appeared on my credit card, with no explanation or documentation. I assume this was the tolling charge.) The only good thing I can say is that the Budget reps at the counter in the Albany airport were working hard, and patiently, in a very inefficient system. I thank them for their courtesy and good humor, and offer my sympathy for having to work for such a broken company. I will never rent from Budget again.
