AVOID at all costs. Pay attention to the reviews. They are absolute crooks. I had photos and video of ALL the damage on the car before I drove it. They claimed I damaged the car after returning it. I had proof showing the marks where already there and emailed and called and they continue to be unresponsive, unreachable or hang up on me! I also took photos and video at drop off as there is no one in the garage and I had a feeling they would damage the car after I walked away and claim it was me. Guess I was right. I never though that a "reputable" company like AVIS would scam me like they did. I rented a car for 5 days, agreed rental price was in total 300 EUR. A few days after returning the car, I saw in me bank balance that they had charged me 45 euros. Since then I am complaining and they give no answers, I called them on the phone and they literally said " I can't help you" and they hung up. Additionally, 4 weeks after the rental they tried to charge me 600 euros, with no explanantion. After sending various emails and calling, they then said it was for an item from the car was missing (this was not true). Luckily I didn't have enough balance in the bank. It took me another 5 calls and 10 e-mails, 2/3 hours of my life, for them to remove the charge of 600 euros. I am still waiting for the other 45. Please don't ever use this rental company, once they have your card details, you are doomed, they will take money from yout account without explanations. I am sorry for all the customers that don't check their bank balance, AVIS most likely stole a lot of money fromm them. Even if you realize, you will expand some about 10 hours of your time to potentially recover your own money (maybe not even). read more

This is the worst rental car location that I have ever dealt with anywhere in the world and would strongly advise to use Sixt or Hertz at if you are traveling to Munich. I travel extensively and typically use rent cars at least 20-30 times per year. Here is my story. Booked a Mercedes E class online. Got to the counter and the agent advised that I had selected a car that couldn't be dropped off in Budapest. We downgraded the car to a Volvo S60 (no big deal) and my GF and I drove to Budapest. We then tried to return the car at the Budapest airport the following day and the Avis location there said there was an additional drop-off charge of 6,000.00 Euro. They also advised that I hadn't booked a one-way rental. My left eye started to twitch and my blood pressure soared but I managed to remain calm. I went back to the conversation I had with nice German lady back at the Avis counter in Munich where I had specifically requested to drop the car in Budapest and was required to downgrade to a lower class of car and couldn't fathom how we miscommunicated. I checked my email for the AVIS contract to verify what the rental agent was telling me and to argue that this was wrong. However, there was no rental contract only my reservation request. The agent also said I would get the contract via email and never offered a hard copy at the airport. Even with the left eye twitching and my face as red as a tomato I calmly asked the Avis Rep in Budapest if there was another option. Agent said we could drop the car off in Vienna Austria (3.5-hour drive) for 900 euro. I wasn't happy but agreed to drop the car off in Vienna. As didn't want to lose a whole day driving back to Vienna and taking a train back to Budapest. Our hotel concierge at the Budapest Marriott helped us hire an auto transport company for 300 euros to deliver the car back to Vienna the following day. Now we are an additional 1,200 euro in on the "Munich Avis" experience but the left eye had stopped twitching and the blood pressure has returned back to normal. The GF was quite happy we got to spend the day in Budapest rather than roundtripping a rental car from Budapest to Vienna. We finished out our vacation in Europe and had a fantastic time until today when I checked my credit card statement and Avis charged me $9,592.50 (USD) which is a bit higher than 900 Euro as communicated by the Avis agent in Budapest. Would have been better to pay the 6,000 euro I was quoted in Budapest to drop there. So here I go on the quest to get my money back. I made the mistake of thinking this would be a typical Avis experience as I have never had a bad one in all the years I have rented from them. Do your due diligence and read the Google, Trip advisor and Yelp reviews. Walk right by this Avis location. read more

One of the most awful experience I've had renting a car anywhere in the world! I normally rent from Sixt and I think you truly get what you pay for. I waited almost half an hour in line for an agent, and there's only 3 people ahead of me, and 2 workers behind the counter. The queue was about 10 people deep, and the agents either didn't have enough people to assist, or they really didn't care. I looked next door at Sixt and they had plenty of open kiosks helping customers. Finally I get to the counter and hand the girl my passport, credit card and license. She doesn't say a word to me, enters my information, and hands me keys. Keys to what? I said what car did I get? We were hoping to get a Mercedes A Klas. Nope, we got a Citroen and it didn't even come with GPS, so the girl had to go back and get me a Tom Tom GPS. Wow, that's sad. The girl points to the walkway and tells me to go over there to get my car. She said the stall is marked. The car lot was HUGE and dark. Cars were flying by, and we had no clue where to find our spot. Found out it was on the OTHER side of the structure, squeezed in between 2 other cars. Did I mention it was dark?? No help available if you had no clue how to start your car.. which it took me a few minutes to figure out. There's no ignition or gear. You push the brake and then push a D button (not a gear shift) to get your car to drive. No help with the GPS, and in fact no one to help you navigate out of the area. On the contract, they also add one additonal day to my rental, in case I was late. If you need to get a car, I would take the train to the city and then get the car there. I expected to pay the €950 excess but Avis charged me c. €1,100 instead and haven't responded to my complaint about a month ago! Horrible service - avoid Avis at all costs! At check in today there were at least 40 people in line waiting for a car, only 3 people at the desk, and the Avis Preferred desk was closed. What a waste of time. The other car rental companies nearby have plenty of staff on hand at their counters. Why can't Avis get it together? I have rented a lot of cars through Avis in the US, with good experience, which has given me Preferred Plus status. The rental from Munich Airport in August was by far the worst experience I have had from Avis. I told the agent I did NOT require additional insurance as I have my own comprehensive policy. She noted this, and confirmed, when asked, that I would not face any additional charges when I returned the car, so long as it was fully tanked. Of course I returned the car fully tanked, and expected no charges. However, despite her previous promise, I was charged additional insurance which cost the same as the car rental! I complained at the desk when returning the car, but the agent who dealt with me was not present, so her colleague told me she would raise the issue and they would contact me. Of course, they didn't. I wrote an email to Avis to raise this issue. 6 weeks later, after writing a more formal letter, and several efforts to reach them by phone, they finally told me they would not remove the charge. So I was lied to by their desk representative: she knew there would be additional charges on returning the car, and she failed to reflect on the policy the simple message from me that I did not require insurance. This is a total scam. No wonder all the reviews of Avis Munich airport have only star. Avoid at all costs. read more

I booked a car to be picked up in Singen and dropped off in Munich. I paid extra for one extra driver. I was given a total price, which seemed at the time competitive, so I signed the deal. Then when I turned the car in, they still tacked on a 25 euro additional charge, "one-way" fee, allegedly because I turned it in at a different place than where I picked it up. But this is what was agreed on in advance. The contract specifically states: * Airport surcharge and railstation surcharge are included on rental days * If vehicle is returned to a different station than agreed at checkout a fee of approximately EUR 30 will apply. But I did return it to the agreed station. This additional charge directly contravenes the contract. read more

I rented a car with Avis in October 2015. They charged me 586€ for damages to the car, taken directly through my credit card. The so-called damages consist in a small dent on the lower part of the front bumper. When I picked up the car, a dent was mentioned on the front part of the car. But apparently it was not the same dent. According to Avis I could have seen this other dent by lying down underneath the bumper and looking upwards. I have yet to receive the actual invoice which they did not even bother sending. I have hired cars for more than 30 years and, judging from other reviews and my own experience, Avis' business model in Munich airport seems to be based on stealing from customers rather than providing a satisfactory service. When we hired the car I walked around it to make sure there was no damage. Nobody was present anywhere to ask/check the vehicle. Upon return, 3 members of staff decended upon us, going through the car with a fine tooth pick and registering a minute spec on the windscreen and a mark on the wheel rim of our Audi A4. I signed documenting that I did not cause the damage and was assured they would not charge us but make contact beforehand. Upon returning to the UK our credit card was charged with 1000 Euro (the excess), far more than the damage reported. After a lot of pressure, Avis reduced this charge to 95 Euro for the Windscreen damage only and agreed that the wheel rim was not damaged. If Avis want to charge customers for wear & tear, they should have someone attend at collection and tell their customers to allow an hour going through every part of the vehicle before they leave! Renting from Avis munich was a horror show. I made my booking through british airways to ensure that all the fees were included and that I could get the free extra driver. 1) There was a long line at the counter so we had to wait 45m. Other rental companies appeared to process their customers more quickly. I could see no visible line at Sixt, Europacar, or hertz. 2) The agent kept saying that the extra driver was not included, despite my paperwork. I had to deal with british airways. Like I was going to call them and then have to wait in the 45m line again. 3) upon return, I was charged tax, despite the voucher saying all taxes and fees included. 4) There was a minor mark on the car (dirt or transfer in my opinion), that the return agent said was my fault. I rubbed most of it off with my finger, but he said he would send a photo to the manager and the bill would be determined. I see a $600 bill upon my return to the US. It was a horror show....would heavily advise to choose someone else. read more

Avoid!!!! Bait and switch! I just reserved a luxury car (Mercedes S class or equivalent) I paid top dollar as it was a key component of our two week vacation in Europe. I had a helluva a time finding a third party to insure the vehicle because the S class has a retail starting at 95k and nobody wants to insure a vehicle with a retrial over 75k. I spent hours on the phone with Avis and various insurers going over this rental and how to insure it. Imagine my surprise when I get to Avis and they give me an SUV valued at half the S Class. I spoke to agents, managers no one would do anything. They said they considered it similar. I paid 1200 dollars and got a car I could have rented for 480$. Such an abusive move by Avis. I had so little time to get to Zurich for a friends graduation ceremony and then lines at all of the car rental company's were impossibly long. I had no choice but to take the car they had left. The funny thing, they had a few S Class in their parking lot, when I asked them to give it to me and disappoint someone else, they said they were spoken for. What the hell does that mean? read more

Like Qype User, I had a similar experience but fortunately was not charged for damage. The rental agreement was to be liable for 1,000 euros for any damage at all, (So even if you come back with a tiny scratch that would cost 50 euros to repair you have to pay the full 1,000 euro fine). This is of course insane, so I asked about their insurance which would have cost me 350 euros while the price of rental the car was 70 euros for the entire trip. Paying 5 times the price of the rental for insurance is unbelievable, so I declined it. I returned the car without any damage, but the person receiving it did a military style inspection on the wheels and body of the car. I've rented cars from six continents and never had anyone get on their hands and needs and perform an inspection like that. Be very CAUTIOUS when renting form AVIS or NOT rent a car from AVIS. It is the first time that I rent a car (9/30/2018-10/10/2018) from AVIS and the worst experience I have ever met. We rented a car of Group G (Mercedes E class) and finally got Skoda Superb 2.0 at Munich. We has bought CDW and TP insurance and the staff tried hard to convince us to buy full coverage insurance. We did not agree with it. The terrible thing happened when we returned the car. The staff examined the car paying closely attention on every details and then found "scratch" on the bumper and then asked to fill out accident report form. The "scratch" is even not a scratch and is just a line like a hair. The most important thing is that we did not have any car accident and are unaware of any collision or any contact with other car/object on the route. This almost invisible scratch might even exist when we picked up the car. Unfortunately, we did not look over the whole car using a magnifier when we pick up the car. They charged the "damage" for about 500 euros. It seems to like a fraud company and try their best to let you pay additionally several hundred euros given you have rush time to deal with other things to take a flight. I then browsed the web and found similar tricks occurred to other customers. I strongly suggest to consider other rental companies although AVIS shows the low rent price. read more

If you want extra headache rent Avis or Budget in Munich. They charge extra without any reason, if you get a response when returning a car "alles in Ordnund" it does not mean anything. If you have prepaid, be aware of mistakes. Among other things, they do not tell this to you at the check-inn, you must keep your receipt from the gas station when you fill-up. Event though you have everything is in order, they still charge you with most imaginable extra charges, many times their own mistakes. I can only relay my own experience. Turned up at desk, no queues just us on the Wednesday 8 April 2015 at 1630. (Got off aircraft as quick as possible) Greeted warmly by Avis lady who quickly booked us through the process explaining everything we needed to know, without trying to flog us extras. I always take out excess insurance in uk, much cheaper than using theirs. Not only was the car brand new 5000km on clock, but was also an upgrade (Nissan Qashqai) with not a mark on it. I did enquire with the lady what I should do if I find marks on the car, she said there are none but I informed her that I will return if I do find any damage before taking to the road. Common sense really. Anyway all was well with the car, full tank and trouble free 4 days driving. Returned car to multi storey car park, which was well signposted. Met by Avis employee who checked the car thoroughly, even asked for the fuel receipt as you return full. I would definitely use Avis again based on my experience. read more

After calling and asking for help they told me I have to drive around in Germany and see whether another Avis has a Mercedes S class or similar.
