The staff here was really helpful. They explained the terms of the rental, and the program for toll roads. In contrast to other rental car companies, there wasn't any hard sell to get the damage waiver insurance. While it's true that they don't accept Sunday and overnight returns (ie: you'll be keeping it until Monday morning if you miss Saturday afternoon close), they were really nice about us rolling up a few minutes past 4 and let us check the car in. Pro tip: when returning the car, just grab a ticket from the machine and pull in; you obviously won't have to pay for it. read more

Wow so many awful reviews... I've been using this location for a few years now and I've rented between 8-10 cars. I've rarely had an issue. I think 1x I was told if I filled the tank up to full they would credit me the difference since when I got the car originally the tank was 1/2 filled but that never got resolved. Other than that, the cars are usually clean and it's an easy process to book (I use Avis app) and grab keys. I've never had any major issues and they have never "scammed" me. It is a bummer they don't accept vehicles after hours but overall I always recommend this spot! read more

This isn't corporately owned but instead is owned by a franchisee, and it shows. Ive rented from this location regularly for the past 8 years. The previous franchisee was great, but for the past year theyve been under new ownership and the service has declined significantly. The owner isnt a bad guy, but the two guys hes hired to work when he isnt there are terrible. Theyre surly, rude, and give yoy an attitude when youre picking ip or dropping off. Rented a car on Thursday for one day, was stuck in traffic returning it on Friday. I called to see if they have an overnight drop box, which they don't. So then I asked if I could just drop the car at EWR since it was 24/7, I was advised they needed my car for tomorrow. Then was told to drop it at Hoboken when they open on Saturday, so I asked if I would be charged a full day for keeping the rental. The answer to that question was yes, so I stated "if I'm going to be charged a full day why don't I just keep the car the full day", they then stated that's fine just turn the car in at 4. I returned the car at 3:55pm the next day, which was Saturday. No one was at the desk when I arrived, I talked to the parking attendant who said they just left. And pointed me in their direction, I saw the guy who I now know is Jonathan but by the time I ran back up they were out of sight. I call customer service and explain the situation and they tell me I'm responsible for the car, which means I have to take it with me. And that the Avis personnel at the desk should be able to adjust the extra charge in the morning. I take the car home and go back the next morning(Sunday). Jonathan is the guy at the desk, he's sleeping behind the window. I wait and he sees me and wakes up abruptly. He just processes my rental without even giving me a chance to speak. We get into an argument because now I'm pissed they wasted my time. He wasn't trying to hear me out Or my concerns. They charge me $30.00 plus the rental fee for a day. Jonathan stated that he left at 3:59 which even if he left at 3:59 he left early. Which means he shut down the systems before 4pm. They still put papers in filthy cars saying they've been sanitized, their cars have maintenance lights and the employees don't wear masks while standing four feet from the 'Avis pledge to wear masks and gloves sign'. They also give you an aggressive attitude when asked to put one on for the safety and protection of each other. I finish parking the car, and there was no one there at 6:45 pm. A full 15 minutes before closing. I call customer service who advise I can either drop off the car in the morning or return it to a location that's still open. So because the negligent employees decide to close up shop early I have to be inconvenienced. I agree to a discount off my rental and head to Jersey City. Turns out, they STILL CHARGED MY CREDIT CARD THE FULL AMOUNT. This company and location is an embarrassment. read more

Tried calling multiple times for a 12 passenger van rental and every time I called they gave me false hope that they would be able to find one, just to give them some time and they will call me back. Well, they failed to call back each of these three times and when I followed up, the person I spoke with was no longer there. This was within a 3 day time span. DO NOT RENT FROM THIS PLACE!!! UNEXPLAINABLE CHARGES!!! NO CONCERN FOR CUSTOMER SERVICE!!!! AWFUL! If I could place negative stars, I would. All started fine, picked up my rental quickly after payment and received an illegible receipt. I wasn't too concerned about it, as I have NEVER had any issues with rental cars before, and have rented from multiple Avis locations across the US. This was obviously a mistake on my part. I returned my rental 2 days prior to the original return date for my reservation, it was in perfect condition, clean and fully gassed up. I returned the keys to the desk and was good to go. 3 weeks later I receive a $130 fine from Avis on my bank statement. When I contacted the location, the lady said she couldn't help me because I had no confirmation number; even though I provided my name, and dates I picked up / returned the vehicle. (Very odd). After speaking to two more customer service reps, no one could tell me what the charges are for nor did they seem to care to help or be concerned. Absolutely terrible service. TERRIBLE TERRIBLE TERRIBLE!!!!! I don't even know where to begin...and if I could give them ZERO stars I would. There is ALWAYS a line there. No matter how early I get there to pick up my car...there is always a wait because there is only 1 person at the desk and they take 20 minutes per customer. They see the line growing...they simply do not care. I have been there approx 10 times (only because it's so close to my apartment) and this has been the case every single time. Expect to wait 30-40 minutes to get your car I have been fighting a $2,000 charge for a week now. I called the office 10 times before I could even get somebody to answer the phone. He was totally confused as to how my card randomly got billed $2,000. THIS HAPPENED 3 WEEKS AFTER MY LAST RENTAL FROM THIS OFFICE. He just said sorry and that he would refund the money. This STILL has not happened and now I'm fighting the charge with my credit card company. I also got hit with an ADDITIONAL $33 bill for "tolls" about a week after I got hit with the $2,000 charge. There is a $4 surcharge if you use their EZ-Pass...but I know for a fact that I did not come anywhere close to $29 in tolls and I made sure to replace the gas in the car I used. I called the avis office....who told me to call the billing department....who told me they couldnt help me and that I had to call another department called "E-Tolls". Guess what? E-Tolls didnt even answer the phone. Do yourself a favor and AVOID this place. read more

Take your business elsewhere! Rented a vehicle which was completely covered in soot! Couldn't see out the back window it was so dirty. When I asked for them to wash the car, HAMZA (Who I know now is the so called manager) said they no longer wash vehicles in that location. Of course there was no other vehicle available. He suggested I take it to the car wash on the corner and bring the receipt with me when I returned the vehicle. That he would reimburse me with a credit to my account. Well, after returning the car and brining the receipt, calling customer service several times as well as calling the location to resolve the issue, nothing has been done. This is the first review I've written for any business. But this car rental location is the WORST I've ever experienced in all of my years of renting vehicles. I made my reservation 2 weeks prior to the pick up date, as I was planning to attend a wedding on that day 2 /12 hours away. My pick up time was 2 pm, I got called at 12:30 pm to be told they had "no vehicles". I called back at 1 PM only to be told, they still didn't have vehicles and that I might want to consider going to Newark Airport to get a car as they "may not" get any more vehicles in. I know what happened here: 1. My rental price was -$300 less than the price they were charging for "new reservations" (as it was a holiday weekend) so I was bumped out of my vehicle and thrown on a list! Just horrible service! Horrible, if I could give them a 0 I would have! I will never rent from here again! With all of the negative reviews I can't believe Avis (corporate) as not stepped in to review their practices or the CFPB. Actually I will be sending Avis corporate a letter also! My advice, if you are pressed for a vehicle especially on a weekend DO NOT RENT FROM HERE! And based on the other reviews it seems I am not alone. Horrible experience beginning to end. I never got a reservation confirmation so the day before I was scheduled to pick up my rental I called to confirm. I couldn't get anyone on the phone until 1pm the following day. They had my pick up time and type of car wrong. When I finally did pick up the car it was the worst looking rental I've ever seen. It was dirty and full of scratches and dents but I was told that was all that was available. The car was $100 per day! I had the car overnight and during that time the tire pressure lights came on, the service required light came on and finally the plastic shield under the bumper fell off while driving on a major highway. When we pulled over to inspect the damage we realized that the shield had been duct taped on. At this point we were close enough to Hoboken that we bought some more tape, stuck the shield back up and drove 35mph the final 20 miles back to Hoboken. I called Avis along the way....no answer. I ended up having to keep the car an extra night because our maintenance stop caused us to get back to Hoboken past closing time and there is no after hours drop... add another $100 to my bill. When we returned the car the next morning there was a sign in the window saying "be back in 15 minutes." When the boy working finally returned he couldn't do much to compensate for our troubles and there were no managers working at this location so he gave us an 800 number to call. I called the number and the customer service rep couldn't help much either. I asked to speak to a manager and was told managers don't take inbound calls so they took my number and said someone would call me back. It has been almost 2 days and I still have not received a call.... I usually rent from Enterprise on River St. in Hoboken (they are amazing and I highly recommend them!) But they were booked this particular weekend. I will NEVER rent from Avis again. read more

When they did get a car it was smaller than the one I reserved. Never did they apologize, never did they reduce their fee. I've never encountered such a disorganized and unhelpful car rental location in my life. I rented a car on Friday a little after 5pm. As I was asking questions, attempting to get more info about the car rental contract, the 2 young males at the counter repeatedly said 'Don't worry about it' and changed the subject to the weekend weather. This is while they are asking me to sign a contract confirming the mileage, condition and gas level of a vehicle I hadn't seen. My return time was Sunday around 5:10 pm. I discussed with the males at the counter that I would be out of town for the weekend and even though my return time was less than 1 hour of their closing time on Sunday, noone thought to mention to me that cars actually can't be returned after hours. There is no drop box for the keys, something I've never experienced while renting a car in the past. So I get there Sunday night, sometime after 6, and there were no Avis spots left for the car. A parking lot employee informed my husband that we could park on the 2nd floor. There were additional Avis spots, so we parked the car in one of them. We then went back down to the Avis counter, only to find that there was no drop box for the keys. After calling the corporate office, my husband was told that we could try to drop the car off at LGA (over an hour drive away..and would also leave us having to find a way home from LGA) and they would MAYBE be able to accept it and we may or may not be charged an extra fee (of an unknown amount) for dropping it off at a different location. Another option was to come back to the location in the morning to do the return. As we both live in Manhattan and also work in the city, neither of these would work. I left the keys in the car, locked -- Corporate couldn't tell me whether this would incur any additional charges or what they would be. I called first thing Monday morning to let them know the situation (where the car was and that the keys were inside) and a young male, who was incredibly rude to me, told me they would charge me for a ticket, that I could dispute it if I wanted and hung up on me. Since my card still hadn't been charged as of Tuesday, I called back to find out what was going on and was told they'd check and call me back. I had a message Wednesday morning telling me the contract was still open. After calling several times on Wednesday, I spoke with Vinny (who was literally the only respectful or moderately helpful person I spoke with at any point during this rental process) and eventually he was able to find out that noone had processed the return and the car was still sitting where I left it. He told me they would charge me for having to call roadside assistance to open the car and had no clue if they were going to charge me for Mon-Tues-Wed even though I had returned the car on Sunday and called first thing Monday morning to inform them of the situation. I have a feeling the worst is yet to come. Based on the numerous terrible reviews of this place, clearly, I'm not alone. It truly boggles the mind that they don't have a sign or at least a policy of orally informing renters that they do not accept returns after closing. If this was made clear to me, I would've had no problem returning the car before closing. read more

As a frequent customer of Avis, I expect them to "Try Harder". They open at 7:30am, and I reserved a car and showed up at that time. I expected someone to be there at 7:20, to have things in order to get customers processed and on their way. I show up at 7:30am, only to find two people waiting in front of a dark office. 10 minutes goes by, 15 minutes, no one. Where shall we start. Constant overbilling, employees that are too young and incompetent, and even a branch manager that doesn't care about any complaints. Been an Avis First customer for a few years and used this site because its close to home and retained some status. No recognition of the past patronage. The rentals are always dirty, gas on empty, and dinged up. The borderline autistic employees are lacking in work ethic to say the least. They refuse to pick up the phone. I tested them once by calling while I could see them in eye shot one day just to confirm I wasn't nuts. They play on their phones or hide in a utility closet. The branch manager, Carl Seidner (carl.seidner@avisbudget...., 914-282-4266) tried to put me on a "Do not rent" list because I disputed an overcharge. Plenty more to list but lets keep it simple. Go to Hertz or Enterprise in Hoboken. It's a $5 dollar cab ride to save you hours of frustration and who knows how much money that they try to squeeze out of you. read more
