There are slower processes than renting a car from this Avis location... Like the Ice Age, having your pancreas removed, raising your kid from birth to adulthood. But they'll all feel faster than the endurance race of getting on the infrequent shuttle and completing the rental process to the point where you can drive your crappy rental car out of parking lot. We spent over an hour waiting for the rare combination of a clean car and nondisgusting child safety seats only to learn that there were only TWO seats in the entire location. The seats available were both extremely dirty and essentially unusable. We had to settle for boosters or the option driving to a store (on July 4th) to buy seats for our kids and have our account credited for some random amount of cash. Oh, by the way, how are we going to get our kids to said store without car seats? read more

I left my handicap placecard over the driver visor, when I returned my car and also some very important documents. The handicap placecard they could not find and the envelope that had the documents was opened. Who would steal someone's handicap placecard? How horrible of a person are you? What reason would you have to open an envelope that does not belong to you? Avis please screen your employees better, because they lack integrity. Now, I have to file a police report. ‍ read more

too bad service，not to rent car in here Again an old slow woman

Adequate for a rental agency, but below par compared to other Avis facilities I rent from. The cars here are higher mileage, but they are OK. Not a lot of folks to help you out with questions. When we checked the car back in, no one was there to greet us or check us in; we had to walk into the facility to get our receipt. Side story: Seems this branch has different rules than others for renting. I witnessed a gentleman trying to rent a van to take some teenagers on a missions trip to NJ from NY. He only had a debit card and they wanted a credit card. He had called ahead of time to corporate who told him it was OK. The manager was visibly annoyed and agitated which I consider poor customer service. It all worked out in the end, but that would be annoying to me as a customer to deal with a nonconforming facility and a condescending manager. All customers deserve respect. Knocked the rating down a star for that. Tempted to knock it down two on pinciple, but the overall experience was... acceptable. read more

The worst rental car service experience. We rented a car that had an electrical issue even as we left the lot and ended up dying on us the next morning. Wasted a whole day waiting for it to get jumped for us to got to another Avis to get it replaced. Other renal companies actually bring the replacement car to you. Nope not Avis. We were worrying the whole time driving to the other Avis to replace the car wondering if the car would die if we stopped at a light. Then when we got to the other Avis they wanted to charge us for not filling up the tank when we bringing a car that DIED on us. When we returned home, we found out that Avis had charged us $215 for the "jump starting" of a malfunctioning car that was their fault and not ours. We weren't in any accident, all we did was literally drive it off the lot. They said we should've bought the protection coverage plan...for what, to cover the cost of getting a lemon of a car???? Unacceptable! Their manager wouldn't even speak to us and said would call us back in 24/48 hours. We are now having to call our credit card company to fight it that way. First time using Avis and LAST time using Avis. read more

3.5 stars My experience here was alright. The good thing was that I received a nice and new car in Altima. I was very satisfied with the car. I didn't like that the clerk who helped me wasn't clear about the upgrade. At first she sounded like I was getting a free upgrade from a full size car. Then when the check in time came, I realized she was just promoting a special rate, but not a free upgrade. I ended up switching back to what I made reservation in the first place. It would have been better if she started the whole process by saying "we have a promotion where you pay this extra for certain car" read more

Avis is located on Bowery Bay Blvd off Marine Terminal Rd, across from the BP. Definitely not where Yelp's map says it is. The car pickup area moved from one building to the next and back again without the proper signage to clue people in. Service can be quick and efficient or agonizingly slow. Cars are clean and rarely in need of oil or a checkup. I've also picked up a couple Zipcars here, same experience. I used to take a cab here until I realized I could hop on the Q69 and walk from 81st St. read more

This review is for the Avis location nearby at 25 Bowery Bay Blvd, so I'm guessing they moved recently. I came here expecting the absolute WORST given all of the negative reviews, but they were the cheapest place around for a weekend rental, so I was prepared to deal with long waits and crappy service (brought a book, some snacks, etc.). Instead, I was in and out in 5 minutes! I had signed up in advance for their free Avis Preferred service, so maybe that had something to do with it. But for a Friday afternoon (2:30pm-ish), the place wasn't busy at all. There were maybe 2 people in line at the main counter and 1 person finishing up at preferred when I got there. I got a nice looking blue Ford Focus. The radio wouldn't turn on at first, but after ~20 minutes of driving it was fine (not sure what was up with that). And it came with Sirius, which was great. Returning was just as easy. I parked it in a line with other returns and an attendant checked me out in a few minutes. No overcharges, no headaches. The price was reasonable for NYC at $191 with taxes/fees for 3 days (I used an AMEX AWD coupon code and prepaid to get a discounted rate). I felt compelled to report this given the hellish experiences other people have had. So yeah---I'll definitely rent from them again (and will update this if needed). read more

Avis - Nice clean car - Car Rental Near Me - Flushing, New York

reserved a jeep for a 3 day weekend trip to vermont. Original quoted price was 416.88 for the 3 days, which was hefty compared to other companies, but since this company was recommended by AMEX, I went with it. After confirming the reservation, my total came out to be $557.06 (base rate + 11.11% concession recovery fee and 22.15% tax). When I returned the car, I was 90 minutes late due to high winds and frozen roadways and construction at LGA with reroutes and hence a lot of difficulty even finding the rental place. An extra $140 was added on to my previously prepaid amount of $557.06 for a whopping total of $697.06. The agent at the return counter was not sympathetic to my plight and finally begrudgingly took off 50%/$72.27 of the extra charge. My grand total for the 3 day rental came out to be $629.33, compared to the original base quote of $416.88. I requested the agent to call for a taxi for me to get home. After waiting 20 minutes, she informed me the taxi is here. I came out to find a black sedan with no official taxi/car service labels and asked the driver how I was supposed to pay him, he told me he would take cash or my credit card number. When I heard that, I knew this guy was an illegal driver and immediately requested to get out of the car, but he started driving the car. I opened the door and jumped out before the car was able to take off. When I went back to AVIS and informed the agent that the taxi was not official, the agent's response was, "we don't provide taxi service and the driver was requested out of courtesy." Another group of renters saw what happened with me and informed me that the same thing happened to them and that I should just request an Uber through the official app to be safe. I called customer service twice the day after and the first call ended up with the agent saying his system was being updated and that I should call back in 30 minutes. Called immediately again and got "Oscar" and explained my situation. He ended up informing me that the charges were made by that specific location and he was unable to change any of the charges. My final receipt showed 11.11% of concession recovery fee, 19.875% sales tax, a CRF (??) surcharge of 0.5/day. OVERALL HORRIBLE EXPERIENCE. Many hidden charges. Shady agents. Terrible location to get to. Frankly I am upset that AMEX Platinum would even recommend such a horrible and unsafe car service. AVIS emailed me for my customer experience and needless to say, that review was harsh. read more

Incredibly poor service. Takes two shuttles to get to the station from the airport. Counter was understaffed and it took approximately 45 minutes to get my car. Upon return, there are little-to-no signs that assist you in finding the proper place to return your car. And the cherry on top? Despite the fact that I almost missed my plane to refuel, and left the car with a full tank, Avis still charged me $41.89 to refuel the car. Avoid this Avis franchise at all costs. AVOID this place. Do NOT rent a car here unless you are on a flight. Pre-reserved and paid for a rental car not affiliated with a flight- it was for a trip. Rude attendants from moment we arrived. NO place to park my car (I drove a friend here to get a car she had rented) they told us to park at gas station- across street This gas station threatens to tow after ten minutes...) staff at both places unfriendly. Car rental then became fiasco because we pre-paid online with a credit/debit card. I am writing this review from location. We arrived from New York city with bus and had to take the shuttle bus to terminal A for the AVIS shuttle bus. The bus was clean and the trip took just couple of minutes. At the AVIS office we were met by Marie. She handled two desks at the same time and she was effective and quick. We had to wait just few minutes before we were served. Marie didn't push any extra insurances nor other costs were presented to us. Actually, we ended up with a brand new Ford Explorer even we had ordered just a Ford Edge. I had read so many negative reviews about this office and was a little anxious about the pickup process but if this is the new standard, I would definitely use them again. read more

The WORST car rental company in existence. Go elsewhere. They charged me $350 more than my confirmed Expedia price! And it took weeks before they grudgingly refunded me. Not only that, but the car they rented me had EXPIRED PLATES that I didn't notice until halfway through my rental where I was in upstate New York far from Avis dealerships. The car doors had old tape marks over them, as if at one time they were there to seal evidence of a crime. Totally weird. Customer service was totally unhelpful. One of the worst locations to rent from. The team in this location habitually do not answer the phone and on the off chance that they do which is never, they're rude and curt. Sometimes they pick up only to disconnect the line. If asked at the counter just today actually , why not just pick up a phone? They provide the glazed indifferent look of I don't care. Or once I received the response.."And?"The car selection is less than par and most cars are not cleaned thoroughly. The team on the ground are absolutely unprofessional and spend their time either chatting away in the back, ignore the lines that form, or double book cars due to lack of attention. For being a location where there is high foot traffic and demand, I'm surprised that their regional management office allows such disarray. I suppose since most of us are at their mercy due to the LGA construction and the extra 40 minutes it takes to reach the rental location via airport shuttle, we just settle for less. I travel for a living and rent from many large and small cities. I wish I could provide 0.0 Star rating. Save yourself the trouble and rent from a different provider or go to 54th Street in Manhattan and rent from that location.(15 minutes from Astoria). There is a post of 5 stars that is absolutely bogus in my opinion. Avoid at all costs! read more

I was very upset with my last rental experience at Avis LGA. I had booked minivan for 10/28-10/30. When I got to location to pick up, they didn't have minivan, they offer Pathfinder SUV for 7 passengers, they it's almost same but it wasn't. We only have 4 people, reason I booked for minivan was because my father has spinal stenosis so he must have big leg room. Pathfinder did not have that. 1st back seats didn't go back enough to give him leg room he needs which end up giving him so much pain,he had to take so much pain killer. I asked them if they can compensate in anyway or upgrade to limited mileage but they refused. Location Manager at the pick up time didn't even wanted to come out and talk to us first, and when he came to talk to us, he didn't even look at me. He was talking to us but looking out the window. When we return the car, because my father was in so much pain, I was in rush to return so I forgot to refill gas last. I refilled once before so I only down to 3/4 of gas. I asked him if I can go out and fill tank and come back, he said it's either gas or late fee. So I went ahead with return and end up getting charged $48 and tax. On the way out I saw gas station right in front, I could of refill and return in time but.... Avis LGA handle my rental very unprofessionally, expression I had from this rental was because I was occasional renter, Avis doesn't care. Take or leave it kind of attitude is very bad for business. Whet they didn't know is I was travel agent for 20 years and I still have a lot of contacts in that industry. And I did a lot of booking for rental cars including Avis for my clients before. But I feel each person who works inside of Avis rental location represents the company therefore they should be aware of all situations to assist rental clients. read more

We waited at a designated Avis pick up spot this evening for nearly 30 minutes and no shuttle ever came. My husband called and the person who picked up the phone seemed unaware he was suppose to pick us up. Or confused. I don't know but he was dismissive on the phone. Someone that was sitting there for quite a while in a budget shuttle offered to take us since he had no other passengers coming. When we arrived at the location there was an Avis shuttle Moto running and empty just sitting there. We go in and there is a guy behind the front desk wearing a black T-shirt and the other who appeared to maybe be a driver sitting down as well. Both were dismissive and unapologetic. When we told him we waited that long and no one showed up. I'm very disturbed by the lack of professionalism and respect that he had when we told him what happened. I would like to bring this to someone's attention as no one wants to be out at 12:30am at night waiting for a shuttle that was clearly never going to show up. read more

Don't come here if you're trying to rent a car. Come here if you want to spend the best years of your life standing in a line.

I was so worried because of the previous reviews but I had the easiest and most pleasant experience here. Everyone was very nice and I didn't have any trouble. All I can suggest is that everyone reads the terms of agreement because the reservations are non-refundable and non-changeable. Also, LGA is a hot mess due to construction, but it was still very easy for me to find the shuttle buses. My economy class car was a Ford Focus with a Sony stereo, rear view camera and Apple compatibility. I was very happy! Thanks Avis! read more

I would give this place NO stars if possible. I have been to this location on a number of occasions because unfortunately my work uses AVIS as its main provider. The people here are rude every time. Never fails. On several occasions I walk up to the front desk and the receptionists are on their personal phones not realizing I am standing right in front of them. They always provide wrong info, which I have to correct them on. Recently, I drove a car out of the avis parking lot and it died on me 5 times. Luckily I was able to drive it back to Avis. I was given another car but no apologies for the inconvenience or anything. I think even a manager was there as he was reviewing with an employee her evaluation or test of some sort (I was listening to this conversation as it occurred where customers are supposed to be attended to). I don't think that should be done in front of a customer and you should recognize when customers are present, say hello and acknoledge what's going on. Last time I was overcharged for fuel. I brought this up and the guy rudely said it was $9 per gallon. Not till I said a half tank couldn't possibly cost $160 did he re do the math and adjust. Again, no apologies or anything. Customer service here is very poor ! read more

I picked Avis for my car rental because of their favorable rate and policy for additional drivers when travelling on business. The online booking process was fine, but once I arrived I had never encountered a lazier unhappy bunch of people. My husband dropped me off and we were trying to ascertain where I needed to go to pick up my rental. The first building I enteredhad no on at the counter, I stood at the counter for what seemed an eternity, no one came out, and then started calling "hello." A gentleman came out with a scowl and when I asked if I was in ths right place for picking up, he told me this was drop off and I needed to go to the other building, and then stopped talking and stopped making eye contact, as if I knew where this other building was and I was being dismissed. I asked where might I find this building and was given directions, but he seemed as though I was putting him out. As I was walking out, I heard him make a tsk sound as I was walking out. Nice. I then go to the other building, which is not marked for rental pick up nor is there a sign for rental pickup. The lady there efficiently got me on my way, but didn't do anything that made me feel my business was appreciated. When I dropped off my car, I was coming from an event I had just operated, and in addition to my suitcase, I had 3 other large bags I was dealing with (in a dress) and had to get on the shuttle bus to get to the taxi line at the terminal. I was the only person there and the shuttle driver could not be bothered to help me with my bags while getting on the shuttle nor while I was exiting the shuttle. I guess I should be grateful that he lowered the platform for me to more easily enter/exit the shuttle but I was shocked. He just sat there watching me struggle with everything. The slogan "we try harder" is a joke. Keep trying guys. read more

Not an exaggeration - the WORST customer service I have ever experienced in my life! Here's what happened INITIALLY: -Rude rep upon arriving at Avis LGA (frustrated with my asking questions about cost... refusing to provide total cost at any point, asking me to multiply daily costs to figure out total) -Providing a snide "yeah" after I asked if I just got in the car and proceeded to the exit after she handed me the card with the car's location (it was my first time at Avis and I was unfamiliar with the practice) -Car broke down three times when driving home Thanksgiving evening -Roadside assistance said to expect 1.5 to 3 hours for a new car to be delivered -Got a text from towing company stating it would be 4 hours (10:30pm) -Called towing company to confirm and they said it would arrive around 11pm -Called again and there was no answer -Called Avis roadside assistance again. They said they also couldn't get in contact with towing company. -I asked if they could verify whether the car had at least been picked up from BWI (where they said it would be picked up. They said their systems were down and they didn't know if it had been picked up. -They asked if I wanted to cancel. I asked how they could cancel if they couldn't even reach the towing company. She said I should wait for the call when they were nearby and tell them I didn't want it! -I stayed up until 1am, but nobody ever called. -Called again in the morning and they had someone else send a car -- arrived around midday.  Lost the morning. -Returned the car at LGA Saturday afternoon and got nothing more than a "here" as the person receiving the car handed me a receipt. I can deal with the rude employees, but I'm shocked because I normally rent from Enterprise and EVERY time they ask if everything was ok with the rental, if I was satisfied with the service, etc. Now for the worst part: I was given the email of Joy Dorest, a manager at the LGA location. I explained everything to her and we proceeded to have an email exchange from 12/28/16 to 1/4/17 totaling 21 messages! At one point she agreed to "no charge" the rental, but then couldn't do it because I had booked mostly with IHG points. I suggested either refunding the rewards company who could refund my points, or just refund to me the value of the rental (whatever IHG paid them for it). Joy eventually stopped responding to me (after doing NOTHING AT ALL) so I was forced to open a customer service ticket on the AVIS site. FIVE days later, Carla Rockwood, an Avis customer service rep responds with: "Thank you for contacting the E-mail Customer Service team. I apologize for the delay in response as well as any difficulties encountered during your rental. Please know that your rental was prepaid through a third party and as such, any refunds processed on this rental would go back to the third party. Please contact your booking source for more information. I am very sorry for this continued inconvenience. If you have any further questions, please let us know." After another explanation of the points, Carla replies (another 5 days later) and states that Avis would not know what I paid, and that she would reach out to Joy Dorest (the manager referenced above who stopped responding to me) for more information. THEY STILL HAVE NOT HONORED THE 'NO CHARGE' Obviously I'm beyond appalled at the broad ineptitude and unprofessionalism of every single Avis employee I've dealt with. At this point, all I can do is advise that you never rent from Avis to avoid this kind of headache. read more

It was difficult to reach the Avis car rental at the Laguardia Airport location. Once there obtaining the rental was pretty easy. I had rented a luxury car - mustang, for my fiancée's birthday weekend. The car was not washed, had a layer of dust on it. It was a very nice ride though. No complaints about the car itself. Upon returning the car, I called to state I would be late because of the traffic. The woman on the phone said to come In and speak to a manager if I felt I was to be late because of the traffic. When I arrived the personnel in the return area scanned everything and I was done. But when I viewed the receipt there was a charge for $112 for being an hour late. I went to speak with a manager and the they were not cooperative and only said no one would say to come in and speak to a manager. It was ridiculous. I would have extended the car one more day for $155 had I not been told I could just speak to a manager. The front desk people at the drop off area are unprofessional, uncooperative, and look like they really don't know how to work with customer service. After a long flight from the west coast, we arrived at the office to find one person working the desk. there was another person running around like a madman but they seemed to have a lot of problems finding the right car for the customer they were serving. It seemed like they did not have enough small cars and were pushing everyone to take either intermediate or special cars. I made reservations online for a compact sedan 2 weeks in advance and when I got there they had no compact sedans. And it wasn't just me. The gentleman in line in front of me had the same issue. As a result they had to rent had us a full size suv. Which is a more expensive rental. The guy in front of me was irate because he made reservations just like I did and argued that if we had reservations, a car should be available and if it's not we shouldn't have to pay the higher price for what's left. All they had left by the time they got to me was a huge Ford Expedition, which was a pain driving around in new York. Also the customer service was absolutely terrible. I checked in and rented a car there at Friday night going into Early Saturday morning on October 8th/9th of 2021. Arrived there at about midnight and it took over an hour to get through the line but there were only about 4 people a head of me and two reps were working. The lady that was working that night was one of the rudest individuals I have encountered in a really long time in customer service. Terrible customer service is not as common now since there so many online reviews that can impact business. But this lady was arguing with customers. And one customer in front of me also got a huge suv and she said she couldn't drive it and asked if she could please switch cars. The lady rep was so rude and argumentative with her. The guy that was working that night was ok. It was the lady that was beyond rude. I WILL NEVER rent from AVIS again. Ever. And I don't recommend anyone else doing so either. read more
