I reserved a car for pickup on Saturday at noon. Nothing in the system alerted that the location closes at noon. I called this morning to confirm my car. Avis confirmed the car and said absolutely nothing about the lot closing at noon. I showed up just past noon to a locked up office. As I tried calling service, their car lot surveillance system started yelling at me that I was trespassing and they were going to call the police. It took me 10 minutes to get through their automated call system to actually speak to a human. It would not accept the prompt human or pressing zero. Multiple times. I had to go through other navigation parts of the system and finally it took zero as an answer. The human told me I had to call a different customer service line. I called the other number and they said it would be a 30-minute wait to talk to a human. There appears to be no way for me to get my car. I have to leave to go to Southern California in the car and now I am stuck. I will never use Avis ever again read more

Avis Car Rental Company is NOT GOOD!!!! STAY AWAY!!! THEY NEED TO BE SHUTDOWN. GO OUT OF BUSINESS!!!! The one one specifically on 901 16th street in Sacramento, CA left my husband stranded today, after we have rented two cars for two months back to back. But, that wasn't the first incidence with AVIS. The first incident was that if you reserve a car online at their website, don't make a mistake, because Avis won't change your reservation. The will have to charge you twice, then you have to wait 10 business days to get your money back. The customer representative don't even want to wait on the phone with you while you are trying to straighten the situation out and make sure you get your $1,400.00 back. Avis is a shitty company. My husband got a new job out of the county, and he needed to rent a car for work until we relocate to our new county. My husband needed to rent a car until we buy a new car somewhere else. My husband thought he would try Avis out. I wish we didn't trust Avis SMH. We have spent around $1,300 to rent a car for 1 month, then $1,400 for the second month. This last time we prepaid $1,100 which Avis has to give back to us now. Avis decided that they wanted to run a credit check on my husband, and when the credit check came back, the Avis worker told my husband he couldn't get another car. The Avis (Asian lady at the front desk) worker told him that his background check came back so she's not going to give him another car (per Avis policy) and essentially left my husband stranded in Sacramento, CA!!! We have spent thousands of dollars with Avis 3 times back to back already. They have already previously STRESSED US OUT by charging us twice...How are they going to do us like that? They don't care about people. They take your money, then leave you stranded!!! We need our prepaid money $1,100.00 back ASAP. Not later, no waiting 10 days. We need our money back TODAY!!! Rented an SUV at this location on Monday, July 18, 2022 for 24 hours. They ensure us they will have a temporary hold of $200 that will be refunded back to us within 3-5 days. It is now July 27, 2022 and still no refund. We called yesterday, and a guy named Manuel said it would take up to two weeks. They lied to us and hoped we forget about the deposit. Here is what I'd recommend doing if you want to rent with Avis Sacramento Call in advance to setup a car rental, get a quote, for the exact amount, and reserve a car. (actually I'm joking, it's a useless waste of your time). When you get to the car rental area of the airport you might want to plan standing in line for 45 minutes or an hour even thought you thought you had made all the arrangements. While you are waiting in line after your long day in airplanes and airports, you can entertain yourself watching Avis employees fiddling endlessly with various incompetent reservation terminals. They are truly focused on those terminals so they don't really have to see the huge line awaiting their good work. Sigh.....!!!!! Never again for me. read more

With an upcoming trip down to San Francisco, I needed to set up a rental car from the SACRAMENTO airport. It turned out that Avis has a lot on-site, and that was the main reason I decided to peruse getting a car through them online. The site was easy enough to guess, going to www.avis.com produced exactly what I was looking for. WHEN I CALLED TO MAKE SURE I COULD PICK IT UP, THEY GUY INFORMED ME THAT THEIR WAS ONE NEAR MY OFFICE & THEY TRANSFERED MY RESERVATION THEIR FOR FREE. On the site you are asked for a lot of information right from the start in order to figure out exactly what type of car you want. This includes the main reservation page, where you choose your rental Date & Time by choosing a pick-up date, a return date, and the pick-up and return times. You don't really have to be exact when you are playing around with the engine, but the more you know, the better the estimate will be on how much you will be paying for your car. One of the things that the site gives you, is the chance to look for deals in case something is on special for your given location. This is a crap shoot in my opinion, because you never know where the specials are going to be, but if you are just surfing around to find someplace to go, the specials could help decide a location for you. One of the other things that it seems Avis does a lot of are weekend specials, so if you are looking to take a weekend trip, this would be a great place to look through if you are trying to find a good deal. Once you have filled out all the information about where you are going, and when you will be going there, all of the car options are presented for that location. There is a vast range of cars from economy class for those looking to save some money, up to specialty cars such as town-cars or high-level SUV's if you are looking to splurge on the town. The rates are given on the page, and they do all of the calculations to tell you how much it is going to cost for the duration of your trip. This is neat, because it tells you the costs for each type of car so that you aren't going into this blind. That coupled with no surprises in the cost really helps to put the Avis Online Site in a good light. At the end of all the detail-setting, you enter your credit card information (the card isn't charged, just used as a holder) and you are "out-the-door" with your car set to be picked up. The whole process is pretty easy on the site, but I honestly say that the best part of everything is the e-mail that they send out with the confirmation on your vehicle. In that e-mail they give step by step directions on how to find the rental agency, which is pretty cool when you are heading to an airport you don't know much about. The e-mail also gives a confirmation number that you can use to insure that your reservations are set in stone. My use of the Avis online reservation system went splendidly, and I am very happy with how well the site worked. There were moments where the site took a little while to load, but that was all right with me, because it was the only (even-slight) drawback to using the web-site. WITH ALL THAT SAID, WHEN I GOT TO THE LOCAL AVIS, THEY GUY THERE WAS EVEN BETTER THAN THE SITE. HE LOOKED OVER MY REVIEW & ASKED IF I'D LIKE AN EXTRA DAY AT HALF COST (WITCH I TOOK), HE EVEN LOOKED AN FOUND A 20% DISCOUNT THROUGH ANOTHER CARD I HAD. HE EVEN UPGRADED THE ECONOMY SIZE CAR RENTAL I HAD TO A FULL SIZE CAR FOR $6 EXTRA FOR THE WHOLE TRIP. I was extremely pleased with the site, and give it the full 5 out of 5 stars. read more

The 16th St Avis branch is a hot mess. I've rented here probably 4 times or so and I should have learned my lesson - never again. Today (10/11/20), they blocked entrance to the parking lot before the time they are supposed to close, making it impossible to drop off my car, even though I was at the store 5 minutes before my return time at noon when they close. The long haired white woman and a short bald black man both gave me attitude and told me I would have to pay for another day. It was clear they were just trying to close down the parking lot and store early and go home, not paying attention to the fact that a customer was coming to drop off a car at noon. They acted completely unprofessional and blamed me for not double parking illegally in the middle of a one-way street to come find them, telling me I'll have to pay for another day. Their argument was 100% nonsense. This is not the only time I've had a bad experience here. I have arrived and my car has not been ready on time, I have watched someone actively stealing a car at the site, and they often are extremely slow to process vehicles, using an antiquated computer system (this all pre-COVID). The only staff here that is decent at her job is a black woman who was working on Friday October 9th. I will never be using Avis again, and since this was a work trip, I will encourage my employer to also never use this company either. Get it together, seriously. Good riddance. read more

I have rented from this location (and only this location) for a number of years. Usually perhaps at an average of maybe three times a year for my daughter softball and soccer travel team tournaments, family vacations, and just general trips of a significant duration. In every time I have done so, it has been nothing but a totally positive experience. Customer service is great. For example they are always willing to pick me up and take me back home (when needed) to my house in East Sac on the ends of the rental period. Never had a screw-up of any kind in any reservation. Rented a car at the Avis on Fulton Ave for a trip with family. When asked about second driver, was required to provide not only an ID, but HIS credit card along with my own. A family emergency brought us back early and I attempted to return the car a day early. I was told there would be an additional $90 charge on top of what I prepaid for the rental, and I would not receive any refund of the day I did not use (as had happened with the hotel we left early). After much discussion with an exceptionally rude agent, my son and I called customer service, was assured this fee was unnecessary and set up a case for whether the additional charge was still applied after letting the agent inside know of the conversation. She made the additional charge and I had to call customer service back to get the extra $90 refunded. All of this was on top of receiving a dirty car for rental. My son and I had to vacuum and wipe down every surface in that car before we would travel safely in mid-Covid19 in it. Talk about life in the fast lane. "Zippidy do dah, I'm happy and gay." (That line makes no sense. Totally redundant. Or is it?) Anyway, I called, reserved a car for the same day and they didn't even ask for a credit card over the phone. I arrive, go inside ... there is no wait and I'm in my spiffy little rental car about 5 minutes later. I can't even remember if I signed paperwork, it was that painless. Plus, they say they can pick up and drop off in the Midtown area within about 20 minutes of when you call/arrive. That is blah-y fantastic. They give discounts for folks with AAA and Costco and their lowest rate is a weekend rate that runs about $27, according to the lady who helped me. The only reason I am giving four, rather than five stars, is because I have seen car rental rates for as low as $13 a day at the Sac Airport. So close and yet so far away. I don't like being teased. The location is great, as it's readily accessible from the train station. Then things fall apart. In theory, they will pick you up and drop you off from the train station. When I arrived, and called 7 times without getting as much as a "Avis, hold please" and instead just getting dropped, I finally had to grab an $8 cab since it was raining. Then, they failed to mention that there was really no way to drop the car after 5pm on a Saturday. I had to call road side assistance and tell them that I'd be leaving the car on the street outside, since the lot is blocked from driving in after 5. They had a very limited inventory (only SUVs). Never, ever, EVER ever again. We had a reservation for a 2:00pm pickup on Christmas Eve. Apparently this shop closes AT 2:00pm, so why we were able to make a reservation at all is a mystery to me. Regardless, upon arrival at 10 til, we find both entrances to the parking lot blocked by rental cars. We circle around and park on the street, and as we're walking up, see a staff member locking up and walking away. He actually turns around AND. SEES. US. and continues walking away. It's not til we get to the door that we realize he was the ONLY staff member there, he locked up early and BOUNCED, leaving us completely stranded on Christmas Eve. Ok, but that's only one guy, you're saying to yourself- can you really blame the whole establishment for that? WE ABSOLUTELY CAN. Next, we call the main help line and explain our situation. The representative on the phone says he can switch us to the airport location (a 20 minute drive), but that instead of $140 we will now be paying over 400 DOLLARS. When we (obviously?) protested, he transferred us to a manager. It would be one thing if the one guy wasn't doing his job, but the remaining staff was understanding, apologetic, and tried to fix it for us. Instead, we got attitude and "that's just policy" (in regards to the insane price jump). 45 blissful minutes later, we arranged to pick up a car at the airport location for the same rate. Well gee, that sounds really lame and inconvenient, but at least they fixed it for you! NOT REALLY! Upon our arrival to the airport, we discover that the woman who assured us that our rate would be the same didn't actually..... input any rate.... OR reservation..... into the system.... and was just trying to get us off the phone, maybe? The only good part of this experience was that the girl at the counter was very helpful, and did her best to navigate their system to give us the same rate we had reserved. We still had to pay an extra airport tax that she was unable to remove, so it was $180 out the door instead of $140, and only 2 hours late getting started on our drive to so-cal. BUT WAIT, THERE'S MORE the car itself had no issues, so that was the only saving grace. Once we got back into town, where you would typically be able to drop the car off with a parking lot attendant and be on your merry way, we discovered that there were no staff outside. We ended up going back inside and waiting in another 45-minute line at 11:00pm on a weeknight (there were two people being assisted and we were the first ones in line.... btw) just to drop off the car. Apparently, the young woman behind us had a similarly horrible experience, and we spent much of the wait bitterly laughing and joking with her about how much we hated Avis. I have rented cars at least a dozen times from Hertz and Budget and never, ever had any issues even remotely resembling this. I will absolutely never use Avis again. read more

The main problem with this location is customer service, or lack thereof. Both the woman who checked the car out to me and the man who checked me in were just barely doing their jobs, and I'm pretty sure it was the last place they wanted to be based on how they were dressed, which was with a jacket over whatever t-shirt they had come in wearing that day, and a beanie to top it off. Unprofessional overall appearance is just a segue to say their demeanor was similar and lacking any sort of accommodation. When I returned the car, I told the manager (the manager!!!!) that I wanted to put in my frequent flyer program into get miles for the rental. He had never heard of such a thing. Apparently, he had been trained the previous day, if ever. Also, and I take the blame for not just saying something at the very beginning, I told the manager at the checkin that the car had a smell the entire time we had it. Pretty much smell like someone smoked pot in it, and then tried to cover it up with Glade air fresheners. I mentioned that the air fresheners had given me a headache and he just chuckled. Well, perhaps I should have raised a bigger stink (pun intended) over this, but basically I just don't want to rent from this location ever again. The people running it are not terribly helpful or accommodating, and knew just enough to skate by. The only pluses are the convenient location and that the car did function well. If it were not for the smell in the car, I would probably have shined on writing this. But the company is big on having a smoke-free fleet. If you're gonna smoke, guys, do it in the bathroom. read more

The AVIS car lot & office is centrally located in downtown Sacramento and easy to locate. I needed a rental car for 2.5 weeks while my own vehicle was at the mechanic for a major repair. I made the initial reservation through Costco Travel and saved a bundle! AVIS picked me up at the mechanic's shop, brought me to their office and Savannah handled the paperwork quickly & accurately. I wasn't comfortable driving a small vehicle, so Savannah upgraded me for free! She understands customer service! Savannah handled the extensions with utmost professionalism. She was always kind & understanding. (Not having a car & delays at the mechanic was very trying for me). I appreciate all her hard work. She deserves a RAISE plus promotion for running the office and rentals with consistent excellence!! As long as Savannah is there, I will return to Avis, if I need a rental car again. read more

I picked up a car to take on a road trip with my kids during spring break. I was given a 2017 Nissan Sentra which was totally fine minus the horrible smell of cigarette. The car was freshly washed and vacuumed. I was in a hurry so i paid no attention until we were on the road. We suffered with a head ache for 4 days in Los Angeles. When I returned the car miss Debbie the counter clerk told me that if I ever have this issue again that I can walk into any Avis company and switch cars. Had I know that I would have switched cars in Los Angeles. Debbie was so helpful and kind enough to give me a discount for the inconvenience. I had to rent a car for about a month while my car was fixed after I got rear ended (started as a week and progressed each week to another week) I originally rented from the citrus heights one and the car I had had a slow leak in the tire so I exchanged it at the 16th one. I stayed with the 16th one the entire time. I worked with Steve and he got an amazing rate each time I had to redo my contract to keep it longer. I definitely would recommend them again, and I would go there again. It was painless and easy. If I can give a lower rating I would... The last two days I was given dirty cars. I rented my first car yesterday and it was dirty so I called it in. The supervisor at the call center told me that I can get a refund for the day or trade in the car. For some reason I decided to give them a chance. My second car was dirty. So I call again, this time I get a supervisor who isn't as professional or helpful. He was mumbling and then transferred me without addressing my problem. I was transferred to customer service and they were trying to give me 20 dollars back for two days. When I tried to tell him my situation he wanted to talk over me and yell at me telling me what I'm dealing with. When I mentioned the supervisor I talked to the day before he started to get sarcastic and act like he don't know that supervisor. He had an attitude with me the entire time because I wanted to talk to a supervisor. The office employees are rude, I've dealt with two separate locations and multiple workers, and the call center reps are simply ridiculous. If you want a professional place were the workers don't try to argue with you about the problem you had to bring to their attention, i suggest you don't book with AVIS, or BUDGET since they're basically the same office and you will end up with the same workers who don't own up to their constant mistakes. I shouldn't even have a problem with the cars when it comes to them being clean because 1. they're suppose to be clean when they're given out 2. there's a disease going around that lives off of unclean surfaces. I mean.. the first car had what looked like dried slobber on the seats and smelt like wet dog... I don't even own a dog so you know that smell got to me. Scratches all over the car and they didn't mark any of that because they were gonna try and say it was me. (They tried it before). I keep saying before cuz I been dealing with them for months. Not a personal preference.... The second car has deodorant stains, something sticky like juice or something in that category.. and even tho it was one piece of trash there was still trash left in the car. Everywhere I looked I seen something that was clearly not cleaned. And when I tried to report all of that to the call center today they didn't even take note. The "supervisor" didn't respond to anything I said he just transferred me to the delinquent who thought he can talk over me and raise his voice. I understand people grow balls when they're not in the same room as the person they're trying to have a problem with.. but I have a mouth on me also and I'm not afraid to speak my mind and shut shit down when needed. For the official record, for over 10 yrs I've used this Avis for rental cars on numerous occasions. The manager/owner, Steve, and his team have always been professional, cordial and efficient. However, on 10/20/18 my experience was completely different. I scheduled a full-size car pick-up at 2pm. When I arrived at 1:58, I noticed a man standing in the lobby. After glancing away for few seconds, he was suddenly gone. When I attempted to open the door it was locked. I noticed a blue purse and two bags on the counter which clearly indicated someone was inside. After another 2-3 minutes, two people emerged from the back room. This man, who didn't appear to be an AVIS employee, that had initially been in the lobby and "Debbie, the manager-of the day, stood before me. She began to speak through the glass stating "We are closed!", in response I stated "I have a reservation". She picked up her personal items and they exited the building. As she locked the door, with her back to me, she stated "everything was shut down, the alarm was on and I need to go to the airport to get a car." There was absolutely NO empathy, consideration or professionalism in her conduct or attitude. I was totally stunned! Just when I thought the situation could not be any worse, I was struck with airport turbulence! Due to an inexcusable staff shortage (during a weekend peak timeframe), the wait in line was approximately 25-30 minutes only to discover from the ONE working employee that other Avis locations are independent franchises and that reservations could not be transferred and they couldn't be viewed in their system. Furthermore, there was a car shortage and, per their system...no walk-ups (my demoted status) was allowed. Thank goodness for ENTERPRISE which had me in a full-size car (for less than the AVIS quote) within 15 minutes. After almost two hours, I was FINALLY able to begin my travels to the Bay Area in support of a gravely ill family member. Of course, this distressing incident will be elevated to Avis Corporate office. However, I wanted other consumers to be aware of the diminished services at the Sacramento Downtown location @ 16th St has greatly diminished their ability to provide outstanding customer services. read more

I'm sorry to say we had a very disappointing experience in July with the Sacramento Avis counter at the Sacramento Airport (I couldn't find a yelp listing for them directly). We rented a SUV in July for a family vacation. Once we were on our way we noticed that a taillight was broken and the SUV smelled like cigarette smoke. We proceeded with our trip, and notified the agent when we returned of both issues. She apologized and said she would make sure they were fixed for future users. We were then very surprised to receive a bill for $419 to repair the taillight! We figured this was a honest mistake, but after weeks of calls and emails with Avis they refused to address our concerns and said that we should have gotten the damage insurance. Why on earth would we have gotten damage insurance to cover damage a previous driver did? Paying over $400 on a $1300 rental for damage that our family didn't cause, after telling the onsite agents right away is unfair and poor customer service. I remain optimistic that Avis could still do the right thing, but feel compelled to let future drivers know of the challenges we've continued to face. read more

Arriving at 9am to pick up my car, the clerk (who didn't speak) wanted to make it clear he resented me interrupting his McDonald's breakfast, and- still wordless- kept me waiting while he moved it away from the computer, then slowly and fastidiously wiped the crumbs off his hands. I had a reservation so my appearance shouldn't have been a huge surprise. When he was finally forced to speak to me, he mumbled something about my choice of car, which I couldn't understand. GREATLY peeved, he repeated it in a louder mumble, but I still couldn't figure out which car he was talking about (I thought I heard blue... back row... something or other, indicating out the window where there were two rows of vehicles, most of them some shade of blue. I had no idea what I was getting until I went out there and matched it up with the plate number on the key. Given how unprofessional he was, I felt uncomfortable giving him my credit card info. And no one came out to go over the car. Hubby examined it and checked the tire pressure. 3 of 4 were low so he asked the garage man to put some air in it... we were told to go to a gas station- their air pump was broken, he said. On the return there was a different clerk but also non-greeting/speaking. She bolted out of the office without saying a word...I guessed she was checking out the car, but didn't know. She came dashing back in and started typing away. Uh, need anything else from me? I asked. No answer. Oh, I said, to myself, I forgot- this is the place where they don't speak to you. Excuse me? she says, Do you need a receipt? I guess having a customer come in here really throws the employees into a tizzy and asking for air in the tires is something the mechanic can't cope with. I was very disappointed in my car rental experience. I reserved a Chevy Cruze and when I arrived I was told that car was not available. I was informed that they could substitute a Kia. When I told them I wanted a 5 passenger (which the Chevy Cruze could accommodate). I was told that the Kia was too small and I could get an upgrade. Kind of sounds like a bait and switch technique to me. Next time when I have to rent a car I will look into other car rental services. read more
