You know all those rules about how calories don't count when ______ ?…read morea. you eat food off someone else's plate b. you share dessert c. you're cooking (cookies have calories, cookie dough does not) d. it's a special occasion Well, my personal "calories don't count" is "when you are trying something you've never had before". Suddenly not only do calories not count, but it's also less important whether something has partially hydrogenated fat and/or corn syrup. I can't be the only one that thinks this way, because the U.S. food industry introduces tens of thousands of new products EVERY YEAR, most of which have no staying power at all. They must know how many of us love to try something new and are pandering to that desire. Sometimes I wish I lived in Japan where country size and population density make it easy to produce and distribute smallish runs of limited edition items in a place where gentei items are highly in demand. Since i don't, 7-11 is the next best thing. 7-11, paradoxically open 24 hours, always seems to be so conveniently located and for me and this one is no exception. THE closest store to my house AND they are the most likely place to find limited edition candy bars, Doritos and sodas, and also where I can go ANY TIME OF DAY OR NIGHT to get my Diet Rockstar fix or pick up a can of Starbucks Doubleshot or even get an egg salad sandwich or some emergency catfood. Really when you think about it, this place is like a little japanese style distribution microcosm and if I try hard enough I can find something new here every time and that means... ...the calories from anything I eat at 7-11 don't count!

Unfortunately, there were no Mexican convenience stores nearby so we hit up the closest thing, this hole in the wall convenience store next to a divey hotel. Everyone in there seemed to know the owner so there's definitely a cast of regulars. As I head over to the small freezer cabinet I notice that it's right next to the porn. Interesting placement. As I dig around I almost settle on a Klondike Ice Cream Sandwich but I notice that there's another item made by the same manufacturer. The Choco Taco. How fitting after I ate a lunch full of tacos. For $1.50 I get a taco made of waffle cone with a filling of vanilla ice cream topped with some sort of chocolate fudge sauce. As I look at the FDA label I realize I'm going to get heart failure if I eat any more than one of these. 55% of my saturated fat packed into 290 calories. Holy cow. I thought the cream based paletas were bad for me. This sure takes cake. So even though this place is a total dive, it gets stars for having weird ass ultra fattening ice cream treats.
