Jeannie walked me through the process, while I was panicking. It was not an easy transition, which is apparently quite common. The location is good, the apartments are two-room, so you feel as if you are living in a real apartment, not a dorm room. The location is excellent, with a lovely outdoor area for sun and fresh air, that overlooks a lake. Now, some months later, we are so glad she is at the Gables. Care givers are lovely and friendly, Mom has made friend with other residents. She's exercising and playing games. She's gone on some of the outings, as well. Dee and Michael are outstanding activities leaders. Lance, Kim, Lisa and the rest of the PT team is fantastic. No, it is not perfect. They have "adequate" staff, which means if your parent needs 2 person transfer, they wait longer. Adequate is not always enough. But, overall, Mom is happy, we're generally happy with her care, the food is not awful (as it was at rehab) and Sheila and the staff genuinely seem to care about residents.

The outdoor area is lovely, spacious, covered, & offers a view of a lake - how tranquil! The rooms were impressive as they had a separate living room from the bedroom - something that I had not seen at other AL facilities. We immediately took her to the hospital, where she was diagnosed with 20+ medical conditions, including heart failure, cellulitis, and pneumonia. She had an infection in her legs so severe that pus was pouring from them. To us, this was clear evidence that her condition had been seriously neglected. What makes this even more heartbreaking is that this establishments explanation was that "they didn't notice anything wrong with her." I find that incredibly difficult to understand. How could staff caring for an elderly resident fail to notice someone becoming this severely ill, particularly when she had such an obvious infection? This has been the most traumatic part of our experience, but unfortunately, it is not the only problem we encountered. BUGS/PESTS: During the process of moving my grandmother in and out, I personally saw at least 10 roaches. This is completely unacceptable in a facility where vulnerable elderly people are supposed to be living. UNSANITARY CONDITIONS: About two weeks ago, there was urine all over the elevator. We notified a nurse and expected the area to be cleaned promptly. Approximately 30 minutes later, when we needed to use the elevator again, the urine was still there. Leaving bodily fluids sitting in an elevator for that length of time is disgusting and raises serious concerns about sanitation. MISSING PERSONAL BELONGINGS: Multiple pieces of my grandmother's jewelry have gone missing, along with clothing. I cannot say whether these items were taken or whether belongings were being carelessly misplaced or mixed up, but either way, it is unacceptable for a resident's personal property to disappear while they are in the facility. MEALS: There is essentially no choice when it comes to meals. Residents get one option, and if they don't like it, there's no real alternative it's basically "this is what you're getting." The menus rarely look appetizing and offer very little variety. These are adults who deserve choices and dignity. It honestly feels like residents are being treated like children with no options. My 7 year old nephew gets more choices at elementary school than the elderly residents here do. GARBAGE LEFT IN HER ROOM: On multiple occasions, instead of removing my grandmother's garbage, staff would put it back in her room. This left her room smelling terrible until a family member could come in and take it out ourselves. LACK OF ATTENTION TO RESIDENTS: On one occasion, a nurse's pager was left unattended on the desk near the elevator on the third floor. It continued beeping while the nurse was reportedly down the hallway laughing and talking on the phone instead of responding. Seeing something like this was extremely upsetting when we were already concerned about the level of attention being given to residents. The experience has left our family heartbroken, angry, and deeply disappointed. We trusted this facility to care for someone we love, and instead, we found ourselves questioning whether she was being properly monitored and cared for. I am sharing this because families deserve to know what our experience was like. These are not minor inconveniences. These are serious concerns involving an elderly person's health, cleanliness, personal belongings, and basic care. If you are considering this facility for your mother, father, grandmother, grandfather, aunt, uncle, or any other loved one, please do your research and ask very difficult questions before making that decision. I would never want another family to experience what ours has experienced. Please take it from a heartbroken granddaughter: if you want your elderly family member to be safe and properly cared for, I strongly urge you to look elsewhere.

It has a 4/5 rating on the CMS Quality Rating Scale (which Medicare gives a facility after their regular inspections) and the pictures on their website show beautiful floors and a nice PT facility; however, my experience was most unsatisfactory. I was admitted from the hospital (August 2025) to regain strength following surgery and before returning home. Upon my arrival, I was greeted by a concierge who rudely commented on my clothes, stating that if they didn't have my name on them, they would be donated. This left a negative first impression as all my belongings were taken away for tagging. In my opinion, the facility's living conditions were subpar, with cramped and uncomfortable rooms. There were two patients per room with little storage for personal items. The one chair per bed for visitors was filled with supplies. My visitors had to edge sideways past the end of my roommate's bed to reach mine only to then stand due to lack of seating. Walkers had to be maneuvered to open the door to the bathroom, enter, and close the door. Cleanliness was also a concern, particularly in the bathroom. I had specific requirements for toileting and an assisted clean-up rarely occurred afterward (for me or the bathroom floor.) I was a resident for 3 days and did not have a change of sheets or help with personal hygiene. My dietary needs were disregarded; I was supposed to be on a high-protein diet to aid my recovery but was given no choices. The meals provided were abysmal, and I'm attaching some pictures to illustrate the poor quality. Everyone received the same meals, and mine often went uneaten.. On the third day, I woke up in excruciating pain in my shoulders, rating it a 10/10. I was unable to push the call button due to pain; my roommate wheeled herself into the hall and yelled for help. She was told that many people were in pain. Several minutes later, a staff member came into the room asking about my last pain medication dose. Barely able to respond, I said, "I don't know," while she stood there. Frustrated, I told her to get help or I would call 911. She didn't respond, so I struggled to dial the 3 digits. EMTs arrived to remove me to a hospital. The whole experience was disappointing and detrimental to my recovery. I believe Westchester Gardens did not provide the quality of care or the supportive environment that someone in rehabilitation requires and deserves.

Other facilities have a common laundry, at one place, two per floor and two washers and two dryers (occasionally non-working) and it is often difficult to get a machine. There is no exorbitant fee you pay at entrance as there is at some other facilities. (Not usually given the name, Entrance Fee, of course.) Coral Oaks requires only monthly rent and that is all that is gone should you choose to move.
