I am not new to Avets. I have used their services for emergency and after hour care since 1996 when they were located on Rt 286, in Plum Boro.
Their mission statement as seen on their website is: "our mission is to provide state of the art medicine and compassionate care for pets and the people who love them"
At one time that might have been true. But now their mission statement should read: "our mission is to provide as little as possible for pets and to disrespect the people who love them"
On Monday morning my little dog began to experience severe neck pain so I took him to my regular vet, who examined him and prescribed muscle relaxers and a laser treatment. Initially, this seemed to help, but by 3:30-4:00pm again the severe pain returned. I called my regular vet for permission to administer another dose of the muscle relaxer early. Permission was granted, and she added that if he does not seem to improve, I was to take him to Avets for a MRI as a diagnostic test to determine the underlying cause of his pain, and to rule out such things as meningitis and cancer which could present themselves as pain.
At approximately 5:30pm I arrived with my dog at Avets and was seen quickly. I relayed to this vet (name withheld) the symptoms, even showing a video and added that my regular vet recommended that I come to Avets for a MRI. This vet examined my dog, and agreed with my regular vet that an MRI test should be performed, and we discussed cost. I paid for the MRI, upfront as requested, and left my little dog in their care believing that they would make him comfortable through the night and that the MRI would be performed in the morning (Tuesday)
Tuesday morning around 10:00am, the call came from a different vet than the one I met the night before, but instead of hearing MRI test results, I was told that Avets would not do the MRI since my dog appeared not to need surgery. Let me repeat that: Avets would not perform a diagnostic MRI test since the dog did not need surgery!!! Instead I was told that they wanted simply give him pain medications, and wanted to keep him another day "to try to get his pain under control".
My protests were ignored: not only did I want this MRI test done, my regular vet recommended it, their own vet (the one seen Monday night) recommended it and I paid for it. I also reiterated my concerns about this dog's sensitivity to certain drugs. Simply throwing drugs at a symptom without knowing the underlying cause is not "state of the art medicine".
At approximately 12:20pm, I heard from a third Avets vet (name withheld) who parroted the same "since surgery is not indicated, we will not do an MRI...". Regardless of my protest, Avets refused to do this diagnostic test. This vet added as part of the reasoning "most owners do not want to pay for the MRI if surgery is not indicated..."
Insulted, I did respond: " every person that walks through their doors is an individual with a unique relationship with their pet. To say 'most owners...' is insulting." A sentiment that every pet owner would agree with. I was then told to pick up my dog and that they will do nothing for me.
I picked up my little dog at approximately 12:30pm (Tuesday). He was so doped, so drugged, that he did not stir until 1:30am (Wednesday), and even then it was only to stumble for about 5 feet, falling 3 times before collapsing back into unconsciousness. Finally, around 5:00am, he began to show signs that the cocktail of drugs given to him by Avets was beginning to wear off.
The was not "state of the art medicine". This was torture to my little dog and to me.
Wednesday morning (8:30am appointment), I took my little dog to Pittsburgh Veterinary
Neurology. The vet did a very thorough exam and an MRI. Thankfully, meningitis and cancer were ruled out and the correct medications were prescribed to work in conjunction with the medication from my regular vet. (Avets did not prescribe any medications, true to their word "we will do nothing for you")
After 20 years of using Avets for emergency and after hour care, I will now drive the extra 20-25 minutes to Pittsburgh Veterinary Specialty and Emergency Center to ensure that my most prized, my most valuable possessions, my pets, will truly get the compassionate and state of the art medical care they deserve. read more
