I'm so glad that I tried out this restaurant. Truth be told, I was walking back and forth on St. Catherine's because there were so many restaurant options. I hesitated because it looked busy from the outside and I assumed there would be a long wait. Plus I rarely have Turkish cuisine so I was wary of trying it again. I'm thankful I tried anyway! The restaurant is actually fairly spacious! You can't see all the tables from the window. Service is quick. I didn't have to wait long. Furthermore, the waitress and the manager were very receptive of my crazy requests like orderingextra inegol kofte! You may want to try the beef and parsley gozleme. There is an older lady near the front of the restaurant that is making the Flatbread by hand! I tried it and it was filling. Not my favorite, to be honest, but it was warm and crispy! Personally, I preferred the kofte. It smelled a lot better and it was a substantial meaty entree! I'd recommend this and I this this is Avesta's specialty. It can get lively at this restaurant so you may have to speak up louder so the staff can hear you. Nice staff, but it's hard to hear or understand each other well sometimes. I abs LOVED the decor of this place and the plating of everything was *chefs kiss.* For our appetizers, we got the 3 mezzes which allows you to choose any 3 apps for $20. So we went with the hummus (which was some of the BEST i've ever had -- the olive oil was amazing) Cacik (which was basc like tzatziki) and then börek (feta cheese and spinach app). The portions at this place are huge so be mindful if you're like me and your eyes are bigger than your stomach. For an entree, i got the Tavuk Kebab which was chicken skewers and i'm honestly still thinking about that chicken. It was cooked to perfection and extremely tender and while I normally don't eat chicken with some type of sauce, it was seasoned so well that you didn't need any. My friend got the Inegöl Köfte which she said was a little okay. She said the lamb packed flavor but she wished there was a sauce to accompany it. A wonderful Turkish restaurant with amazing meals that's let down by subpar appetizers. This Turkish restaurant is located in downtown Montreal between Chomedy & Fort. If you're hungry and want a filling Turkish meal, it's a must to get the Manti, an absolutely delicious, and for me personally, star dish of this restaurant! The appetizers could have been a bit better which brought the rating down. Keep an eye out for the lady in the window making fresh pita or fresh manti dough! I appreciate the fact that this restaurant does not over salt their food, there is room for you to salt it to your preference. Sarma- this was the best of the appetizers we ordered. These are vine leaves that were stuffed with rice and beef and topped with garlic yogurt sauce, and dollops of ground roasted red pepper in oil. There was nice tang from the yogurt and if the vines were stuffed a little bit more it would've been nicely sized too. I honestly didn't taste or feel a lot of meat so I guess that was more subtle. 4/5 Borek- please be aware that there are 2 types of borek: spinach & feta as well as ground beef and smashed potato. I only saw the ground beef and smashed potato on the menu but I just didn't read it fully. They brought out the feta and spinach version because they were out of the ground beef. I would've preferred if the waitress had told me that in advance before bringing it out. I did not enjoy this appetizer actually because it was cold and dry. If it was fresh and hot, this probably could have had more potential. 2/5 Lahmajun/Lahmacun- this is pretty much a folded pizza if you had to compare it to something. It was made with fresh pita topped with herbs, spices, tomatoes, green peppers, onions and ground beef. Again this dish was lacking in the ground beef and maybe a bit of salt in the spice blend. This was a very soft dough also and I wish it had crisped up a little bit. But this could be the Turkish way when I'm used to the Armenian way, which is served more like an Italian pizza. 3.5/5 Sadj Kavurma- this was a very good meal. You can option it with either beef chicken or lamb. We got chicken. It was nicely seasoned, served on a nice sadj plate with bulgur and salad on the side. Bulgur is a different grain, comparable to rice or couscous. That was nicely seasoned with a good tang as well. I recommend you try this with the fresh made pita as va well! 4.5/5 Inegol Kufte- another great meal! Beef Pattie's that were so juicy, it was easy to digest. Add a little bit of salt and it's taken to another level. It's served with rice mixed with chickpeas and roasted peppers and kale salad in a light vinaigrette on the side. 4.5/5 Manti- the star of the show! If you like ravioli that are miniature and round in side, with a good chew that's wrapped in garlic yogurt and spices, dolloped with crushed roasted red pepper in oil, this is the dish for you! It's my go to dish here and one of my favorite dishes ever. A must try!! 5/5 Kunefe- the dessert that's a must to get as well. Angel hair grains fried in butter on top of a melty cheese, drenched in simple syrup and butter and topped with ground pistachios. This is a middle eastern dish to absolutely try! 5/5 Coffee & tea- served in mini Turkish dishes, the tea was floral in flavour and the coffee was strong and pretty much equivalent to a shot of espresso. Both delicious. The tea came with the meal but the coffee was extra. Yelpers didn't let us down, as this was an excellent and more polished but still family-style restaurant that elevates itself from funky hole in the wall to special occasion place through a combination of excellent service and ambiance. We had a nice bonus - a seat where we could watch bread being prepared in the front window. The house specialty, the leg of lamb, was quite substantial and delicious, although it showed ever so slightly the effects of reheating after having been in a long stew. There are kebabs and turkish meat cakes for the less adventurous (like the kids) that were still unusual and quite tasty. The farina cake was unusual and delicious. And, they do have wine available, including in demi-litres, at decent prices. Our server said that most of the time she's busy working on lavash bread. On our day she was making manti (a Turkish ravioli). We ordered a sampler of three spreads. That appeared to be three full portions. The hummus may be the best I've ever had. One spread - the pine nut and pomegranate paste - was totally new to me. The other (eggplant/red pepper) was good but paled next to the others. The husband thought his kofte wasn't as good as the place we go to in the San Francisco Bay Area. It came with rice, thinly sliced tomato, and green pepper salad. I ordered a dish I've never seen before, the gozleme. Basically it was a stuffed flat bread that we got with "smashed potatoes." It reminded me of Afghan bolani. It was nicely spiced and well, delicious. The server brought us free tea. It might have been because I talked him up about the food and what dishes weren't available on Turkish menus in California. I asked if the food here was actually Kurdish. They make delicious bread and appetizers were good. The food quality was low. We ordered fillet mignon and chicken skewers, and Iskender kebab. The skewers came with rice, bread and salad. Iskender kebab came with salad and yoghurt. Skewers were very dry and didn't have any marinations. The were partially burnt and overall, low in quality and not tasty. The Iskender kebab was soaked in heavy tomato sauce and you barely could feel the real taste of meat. The service was quite mediocre; we went at 2-3 pm; which probably is not the best time to receive the best service. Finally, the food was very expensive for the portions and quality. This review is based on dining at weekday evening. The restaurant wasn't crowded as we expected. One lady was making gozleme right by the entrance which is impressive. The waitress who greeted us was very nice. Dining room looks nice too. The only thing I didn't like was table clothes. They are actually very beautiful piece but I don't think they change after every customer. That could be a hygiene problem. We started with red lentil soup, which was good. Then continue with sarma, also was good. We tried spinach gozleme and liked that too. My wife ordered inegol kofte for entree. That was so dry. I ordered beef saj kavurma, this was good. My gozleme was really good.... it tasted like a tiny meat pie. I could taste the spices and enjoyed it greatly. To drink, i had turkish tea; it tastes like black tea but a little bit more bitter. It comes in a tiny glass and costs only $1. I loved it but i think its high in caffein. For dessert, my friend and i shared a baklava. Its actually 4 little baklavas so it was perfect to share. Finally got to try this place out and it is actually my first time trying Turkish food. The interior decor is cosy because of its warm color scheme. The menu is well explained, and they even have pictures reference on the last page for people who are not familiar with Turkish food like me. I ordered the borek in beef and pasley for appetizer, menemen, and gozleme with beef and pasley. - The borek in beef and pasley was really tasty. I thought the crust was going to be flaky but it is actually soft. - The menemen is actually similar to a typical Chinese dish, but it tastes a lot more sour and the persley adds more flavor. It comes with pieces of thin pita that are freshly made (the lady sat by the window and made the pita for us right after we ordered). The pita is super thin and soft. - The gozleme with beef and pasley tastes similar to the borek, the only difference is that the appetizer got a thicker crust. The gozleme also comes with a small salad. The dressing was really special: it was yogourt mixed with spices that tastes a bit like pesto. Super tasty in overall. We tried various items from the menu and all were fresh and full of flavour, the portion size is also generous (we were so full and satisfied when we left!). We had Lahmacun (flat bread covered in ground meat and spices) it was excellent ! We also had the Beyti kebab that comes with bread , rice , veggies and salad (this was outstanding -hands down the best kebab I've had in a long time ! So well cooked and tasty. As a Turkish person I must admit that rating the food here is a bit tough but I'm doing it per what goes and is available in North America, rather than a restaurant in proper Turkey. Stuffed vine leaves, a staple of feasts at home in Turkey, is rarely done well in restaurants, especially in North America. Avesta gets it right most of the time, which is a blessing; if you are not vegetarian, I highly recommend ones with minced meat over veggie ones as the latter are harder to make well and Avesta does screw it sometimes too but their minced meat ones are almost always very good and definitely worth ordering. Their mezze (appetizer) options are all very good; the way they make tzaziki/cacik is more to the Greek style than authentic Turkish but it fits well with rest of their menu. Be sure to try their gozleme, which are savoury stuffed flat bread buns (or 'crepes', one could say); they prepare those fresh and right in front of you at the store on a traditional saj stove. Similarly, their manti (tiny dumplings served in lovely Turkish yoghurt with mint-tomato paste sauce) is very good; I know that they work with local Turkish women to prepare those and hence am not surprised at the quality. Sometimes I find the filling to be a bit too much, but that's just my not-super-into meat self. Their saj kavurma (sauteed chunks meat in special traditional pan) are all very delicious and also very hot/spicy; if you are not good with pepper, tell them in advance ordering this. I'd say this is their most authentic food out of all the entrees. I like their Inegol kofte (a kind of Turkish meatballs closely related to Balkan-style meatballs) and Beyti kebab (minced meat kebab wrapped in very thin flat bread, cut with sauce drizzled over), neither is anything like the original. Most of their entrees are in fact not exactly 'authentic' but they are tasty copies; the sort of food mums will make at home in Turkey as knock-offs of fancy restaurant kebabs that are very hard to make. It will give you a good idea of the sort of herbs and spices used in Turkish cuisine as well as the tones of taste and variety, even if they are not exactly authentic. Their desserts are very meh; even by home-made standards, very very meh so I'd say skip it. Tea is alright; your regular Turkish tea; honestly not worth the cost, but hey if you have never had it, it's authentic Turkish tea so you may give it a try. All in all: this place is a good place to go just for the bread and appetizers to be honest. In fact sometimes I go just for that. Also: do not expect quality waiting staff or service. They are polite and nice but also slow and often short in numbers. Turkish food itself takes very long to make, hence even Turkish people like me coming to a restaurant when we crave borek or kofte, so if you aren't willing to wait fifteen or thirty minutes for your food, don't bother--go to McDonalds; this is not 'fast food'. In Turkey its food probably wouldn't even be regarded as 'decent' by our restaurant standards, but it is very decent by North America standards. read more
