when talking about seafood, freshness is very important. I give this place a good mark for that. I also think that if you are going to charge the high prices this place charges, flavor should also be a considerarion. I bought several things and there is no doubt I found flavor missing. The clams casino were basically the same you buy frozen at Acme, the crab soup tasted like flour and salt. The crab cakes that were advertised all crabmeat were loaded with mayonaise and extremely bland. When I asked for red pepper flakes, the youth behind the counter had no idea what I was talking about. The food is pretty good and the people are friendly but the portions are minimal. I've had better and more plentiful in my many visits to the Shore. Dropping almost 40 bucks for a couple lunch platters that consist of a smallish potato, a scoop of slaw and about 12 medium sized scallops or 8 medium shrimp just doesn't cut it. Seems like the portions keep decreasing and the prices just go up. This is probably our 8th visit to the Shore and perhaps 6th to Avalon Seafood, and sadly, I think it will be the last. read more

Avalon Seafood is wonderful, and I am surprised they only have three stars. Each year on Labor Day Weekend my mom has a huge Lobster Fest, and everything is catered from Avalon Seafood! They are always on time and provide us with extra sides as well as napkins and bibs! The lobster is always fresh and delicious, and it makes our annual family tradition so enjoyable. We return every year to use them for a reason! read more

Picked up takeout a few nights ago while on vacation in Avalon. We had the fried flounder, ahi tuna, crab claws, and specialty crab soup. The seafood was very fresh. The crap soup was very salty and I am one to like salty food. It was a bit expensive but portions were decent. read more

Five of us ordered for pickup. I got a tuna steak. It was cooked nicely, a bit rare in the middle and a good consistency. Though the flavor was a bit lacking for some reason. It did come with this delicious mustard dipping sauce though. It's really pricey, like sit down meal-style pricey. My tuna steak was around $20 or more. Each platter adds a baked potato or fries for a few extra bucks. We were hankering for some seafood and did not want to go out, so it hit the spot. However due to the cost, and the fact that the food was not overwhelmingly amazing, I would probably not frequent this spot. read more

Delicious! Placed a large takeout order for 7 people with a variety of items from scallops to oysters to fried calamari. All the the items were packed well so even after the 10 minute drive back to stone harbor, the chilled entrees remained cold and the hot entrees, hot. Prices were very reasonable and we all were stuffed and happy. Definitely a treat for us after a disastrous first night meal at overpriced and overhyped Quahogs. read more

Bought two tuna steaks that were very pricey, but I'm on Vacation so I got them anyway. Marinated them in Asian glaze for a few hours. Seared them up, and they tasted like weeks old bad fish. They didn't smell bad just tasted horrible and very fishy. They were supposed to be sushi grade at that. I had to throw them away. Also the crabs were just sitting in a bushel basket from the day before. They didn't look to appetizing either. May not ever go back here. read more

I agree with Ryan 100%. The food is above average. I am a little bit of a sucker and go there 3-4 times every year for as long as I can remember. 7/6/2011 review. Food very good. Portions small for the money. But here is the lame part. One small butter for 100 steamed clams. No butter for my lobster dinner. So had to nule my own. One small Tatar and for a shrimp dinner. You would think they would throw extra things like condiments in for 5-6 large dinners. Will go again and again but it is not an outstanding value. Good broiled shrimp and scallops. I tried the crab fingers, awesome. The cost was on the high side but worth it.

Really bad experience. We got two appetizers, calamari and muscles. Calamari was clearly frozen and really chewy. Looked like Mrs Pauls. Mussels were so salty that they were uneatable. Had to throw them away. read more

Ordered 15 dinners including crab cakes, seafood bisque, steamed clams, lobster, flounder, stuffed shrimp... On and on. The meals were ready for pickup in 20 minutes, there were no problems with the orders and all of the food was hot and delicious! What's not to like about that?? read more

Avalon Seafood has gone down hill. The fresh seafood is good. The prepared food is simply awful. Had Shrimp scampi and the shrimp was so small, the linguine was overlooked and slimy and lastly the sauce came out of a jar that was disgusting. Won't be going back. read more

My husband and I were in Avalon with family and friends July 20th thru July 27th. The last day of our family vacation we had a surprise celebration planned for my husband for "crabs and dinner" planned on the deck of our home on 27th St. We placed a large order for take out crabs and were disappointed when they were very watery and mushy. We immediately returned to your store with receipt of purchase with the hope to exchange our purchase for fresh crabs. My husband and I politely explained our concern requesting a replacement and were met with attack and accusation. The female at the counter was initially very polite and voiced that she had fresh crabs in the "back" and offered to replace the bad crabmeat. Upon return from the kitchen she was followed by an older gentleman with salt and pepper colored hair who immediately began verbally attacking us. He refused to replace product for us and told us he would not "give us anything." He argued wanting to return our money to us and initially told us to return the next day and ask for Carl even though we presented receipt of purchase. We had cut the paper bags the crabs were packaged in to use a paper cover for the table and re-packed the crabs in plastic Acme bags to prevent soiling in my car interior. We were verbally attacked by this man for the Acme bags in front of many customers and other employees even once explaining the reason for their use. We were never anything less than polite and really never wanted a credit of purchase. Our hope was to replace the crabs and continue wit out celebration as planned. This man was extremely rude, verbally aggressive while we maintained complete professionalism. In the end, he returned the cash, called 911 and screamed at us in the parking lot to "never come back again". All of the employees in the store on Saturday afternoon around 5:00 pm can testify that we were nothing less than polite, never raising our tone and only asking for the situation to be taken care of. It was humiliating and embarrassing to say the very least. My husband and I are both in customer serviced based careers and cannot imagine worse service and treatment. In the end, we were unable to have our celebration as there were no other markets in Avalon with crabs available Saturday evening. We are very disappointed in your business and our experience and would find it difficult to frequent your business or make any positive recommendations in the future. I would hope for this matter to be addressed with that employee and you can certainly question other employees to verify our experience. * read more

I love Avalon Seafood - we come to the market almost every day for the 2 weeks we are in Stone Harbor for the summer! We also get takeout from the restaurant a lot. Everything is super-fresh and we especially love their steamed lobster dinner which also comes with clams and fresh jersey corn on the cob. This place has friendly service and consistently great food - a must visit when you are at the shore. read more

I guess I'm not allowed to post zero stars. During the last twelve months I've hosted many friends at my home which is here in Avalon and, regretfully, three of them have come down with food poisoning. The last two was a couple who just called me inquiring if anybody else in my house came down il after last weekend. And (fortunately) nobody else did. But these two girl's last meal was from Avalon Seafood. Everywhere and everything else they consumed over their brief, less than 24 hour stay, was consumed here form meals either shared by others, or they individually dined on meals not common to each other. The other food poisoning case was a year ago when my best friend's sister came down for an overnight and also ordered from this takeout joint. Another friend's girlfriend, a couple years ago, paid $40 for a small bag of shrimp one evening just before they closed, only to drive directly to her home (in Ocean City, NJ) only to discover that it had gone rancid by the next morning when she pulled it out of her refrigerator, and had to be discarded. I realize fish has a very short shelf life. But I'd rather have a seafood place tell me they sold out, because they bought only what they KNEW what they would sell (within safe shelf life expectancy), vs buying what they HOPE to sell, and pushing off fish and shellfish that's been rinsed off with a hose every couple of hours as it begins to deteriorate. read more

We placed a takeout order including stuffed shrimp, broiled scallops, steamed clams, tuna and swordfish kabobs, and the combination fried platter. The quality of all the seafood was excellent. The corn on the cob, cole slaw, and sauces that came with the platters were good. My only complaint is that the portions were small, especially for the combination fried platter, which I expected to be much larger with a price tag of about $25 and described as "generous" on the menu. read more

Ordered 4 platters for takeout - softshell crab was undercooked in the middle, lobster tail and scallops were overcooked (tasted like it was reheated). The coleslaw was old and fermented. Two of us ordered baked potatoes which were COLD as tasted like they were from the weekend (we ordered on Tues nite). read more
