I grew up in the area and after not visiting Avalon Freeze for several years just due to living elsewhere, I can say that nothing has changed - and that's a good thing! If you're craving soft serve in Avalon, this is the place to go. Even though there might be a long line, the line moves very quickly since the options are limited (in a good way!). You have your choice of vanilla, chocolate, or twist ice cream and a few rotating flavors of frozen yogurt. There are several options of specialty cones (including cookie and pretzel) as well as many options for toppings. My go-to is a twist in a cone with rainbow jimmies (yes, not sprinkles - we're in NJ!). This never ceases to disappoint. If you're looking for something a little more exciting, you can choose from a sundae, milkshake, or an Avalon Freezer (basically the equivalent of a Blizzard from DQ). I had a small watermelon slushy with a vanilla ice cream floater that was wonderful and affordable. My husband had chocolate ice cream with a peanut brittle topping that he really liked. Although there is no indoor seating there is a variety of tables outside that you can sit out. This place is a true Avalon tradition. It opened in 1957, and remains an Avalon landmark. They make excellent soft serve. Fast and friendly service. There's a line for a reason. They make great milkshakes, cones, dipped cones, and Freezers. (A "Freeze" is what DQ would call a "blizzard," what other folks would call "concretes.") Many families make good memories here. Our family favorite ice cream place for over a generation. My son waits all year to come to Avalon for the chocolate shakes. I prefer the vanilla shakes. The ice cream tastes perfect, and the consistency is much better than anywhere else. The only problem is that it melts instantly, but that's the insane humidity in New Jersey, which isn't their fault. They also handle large crowds in record speed.
