My fiancé Irina and I live at Avalon Brighton, I personally live since May 2025, Irina rented the apartment back in June 2024, she was never late on her payments and always paid on time and in advance.
Unfortunate ,Since May 2025 Irina has been very sick--pneumonia, lung scars, constant coughing, no voice. On October 8 she even lost consciousness and called 911; she spent eight hours in the hospital.
I was hospitalized twice this summer with chest pain. While we were fighting simply to breathe, the management of our building kept threatening us with eviction. We paid rent through August for the another apartment located one floor bellow. For another place we just owe for September and October--$4,440 each--and about $21,000 left from June, only because Irina was fired on August 15 for being ill and voiceless. We asked for an eight-month extension until benefits arrive. Instead, on October 5--five days into the month--they sent another eviction notice which just shocked us we are just 5 days late and they know our situation !
Irina with tears sold everything she owned--her jewelry, the designer clothes, even some very precious gold like medallion from her grand grandmother which was very antique. We live from food banks. Manager Amanda Muñoz shouted at us and refused to help when our cat fell from the window. Attorney Nate told the court that we never informed Avalon about our illness. That is false; we have phone logs and emails proving we did. And when we were only one hour late to court because of Irina's breezing attack and terrible cough that followed by the documented 911 emergency next day, the judgment was issued without us.This is not just about us. This is a larger problem in America--when property owners a window. Attorney Nate told the court that we never informed Avalon about our illness. That is false; we have phone logs and emails proving we did. And when we were only one hour late to court because of a documented 911 emergency, the judgment was issued without us.
This is not just about us. This is a larger problem in America--when property owners act like they own people too, and sick tenants are treated as disposable.
We are not alone; other families in our building have left under pressure. People are afraid to speak because they think no one will listen.
We need the public to see that behind every "luxury apartment" there can be a story of pain, illness, and fear. We need laws that protect tenants who are sick, and accountability for corporations that forget compassion.
