Well, while we started w/ a great attitude - "give us a list of what you want done and we'll offer you pricing, so you can determine what you can afford", { how is that for a residential GC? } there were increasingly lengthy periods of not responding to text, voice-mails and e-mails. after reaching the 6 month point in a "5-6 week project", Dana's words several times, we have a partially finished house and are searching for another contractor to correct problem work, and just finish the job. I've owned 4 homes and survived 9-10 renovation projects. this one was over $100,000 w/ multiple trades inside and out. maybe he was just in over his head? the sequencing of the work made no sense. there was no apparent supervision of the sub-contractors, and absolutely no quality control. a few subs. did do good work, but that was over-shadowed by the totally wrong work, zero progress and finally abandonment of the project. RUN, don;t walk as far as you can.

We called around and got a few quotes and Michael was the only person that was honest and straight forward. Other companies told us we would need to pay a fee for them to pull a permit or re-roof the entire house and Michael straight up told me that due to the size of our job, a permit wasn't required by the city and that most of the roof was still in good shape! Seems like other companies we were in touch with were trying to take advantage!! I called Michael and he was able to go out and inspect our roof and give a quote in a timely manner. He kept me up to date via text about every step of the project and sent pictures to me so I could see everything. He was reliable, quick to respond, professional and friendly. When picking out materials for the project, he explained all the differences between the types of shingles in a way that was easily understood. I absolutely could not possibly give him and his company any less than 5 stars. Service, quality, price.... No brainer, here. Got roof work? This is the dude to call!

In a world of flaky contractors, his great communication skills and follow-through really stand out and set him apart. He took care of a couple minor things in a reasonable amount of time and for a reasonable price. He's now our first call for any other home improvement projects that drop up. He is a nice guy and during one of our chats told me he and his gf lived in a trailer behind Home Depot and heating bills were high. His gf did not work. I felt bad and told him that if I was satisfied with his work, I would let him replace my patio. Up to that point the paint job he did was fine. Covid hit and future work had to be temporarily halted. I asked him several times to return my key but he never did. I found out why. He and his gf and pets were squatting and partying in my home. The white berber carpet was now dark gray with cigarette ashes and pet stains. The bed was unmade and the new bedspread and sheets stained with bodily fluids. The new carpet in the bathrooms had apparently been saturated with water and there was mold. The toilets were not only stained but one upstairs toilet that Jon had gone with me to pick out and make sure I got the right one leaked all over the floor and stained the ceiling beneath. I suppose living in a beautiful townhome with central air and heat sure beats a trailer. Glassware and items used to stage the home were also missing. Other then myself, the only other person with a key was Jon. I immediately called the police and made a police report. They told me I could press charges but since for all intents and purposes Jon was indigent, the only thing that would happen is a bit of jail time. I would never recover for the damage he had done. It was the LAPD that suggested I write a review. BTW, Jon also mentioned that on another occasion he was accused of entering a home he was working on w/o permission and actually causing more damage then he had been hired to fix. This couple threatened to sue Jon and refused to pay him. When Jon told me this story, I believed he had been wronged but now not only do I wish the couple had left a review, I wish I had seen the red flag. As the police suggested, I posted a review last year which Jon responded to via a private message ( which I kept) laden with expletives and wishes that I die. He also managed to get my honest review removed. I have learned a very valuable lesson. From now on I will only use professional people or people recommended by someone I personally know. In my effort to save a few dollars, I ended up spending a whole lot more to replace carpeting, toilets, towels, bedspread, sheets and pillows and repair the mold and ceiling stains. It's too easy to get a group of friends to write stellar reviews and Yelp does not vet its businesses. All I can say is caveat emptor. Do your due diligence and by all means if you insist on hiring Jon, do not entrust him with your key, and make sure someone is on the premises when he is there.

He went directly to what we needed and recommended Pedro, and gave us his phone number. We contacted Pedro and he came to the house and gave us a bid. His truck sign said BRIONES CONSTRUCTION. He installed the surge protector, then we asked for a bid on a new driveway because ours had several trip hazards in it from settling. Then we had him bid on the removal of some old chain-link fencing and replacing with a solid wall to match the rest of the privacy walls on the property. THEN we had him check out the composition three-tab roofing since it's coming up on 20 years old. Pedro said the roof had a few more years of life in it and when the time came, instead of replacing the roof he could put a coating on it that would extend the life for another 5 years. Sounds good to me. He could have made a lot more money by telling us it had to be done now. We have also had them install a whole-house water conditioning system. No more need for the Brita filter. The water tastes great now. Always fair; always on time!! Even today we had Frank here and he took care of leaky exterior water faucets and a problem with our gate.

We are very satisfied with the work. We think we would have paid a little less, had we gone with someone else, but we doubt the quality would have been as good. Joe Goodpaster, the owner, has worked in construction for over 50 years, and we got the impression that he's learned quite a bit over that time. But he was also very open to our suggestions regarding how we wanted the house remodeled. He tried his best to accommodate our every wish. We found him easy to work with. His crew always showed up on time. There were schedule changes on a few occasions, but Joe always called us ahead of time to advise us of the revised schedule. His workers, including Shannon, Justin, Larry, and Luis, were always very polite to us. They also seemed competent and professional at the work they performed. His crew cleaned up at the end of each workday, so no messes were left behind. And construction debris was promptly removed from the property, usually on the same day. A few small problems arose during this remodeling, but we think that's to be expected for such a major job. Every day, Joe would solicit us to talk about anything that left us dissatisfied. And we were always able to work things out and resolve the few issues that did arise. I highly recommend Goodpaster Construction to those who don't mind paying a little extra for the quality and care this contractor puts into a job.
