Often times our remote projects are in the western United States where homeowners already understand the value a designer brings. The biggest downfall of designing remotely is not having a contractor to refer to our remote design clients because as I'm sure you can imagine, things don't usually go to plan and corners get cut. That changes for us when we met Joe. High end custom outdoor living construction is expensive, it takes a while and it's stressful but if the communication between all parties is on point, the project is a breeze. We're happy to have aligned ourselves with Aspenwood. Our other projects in the area have been train wrecks due to contractors promising things they cannot deliver, overbooking themselves and most importantly horrible communication. This company has knocked it out of the park for 3/3 of our area projects and we're looking forward to the next one.

After a few years of seeing our dog destroy our backyard, we finally decided to consider installing…read moreturf. I checked Yelp and Google, and I also posted in my neighborhood Facebook group to see who my neighbors used for their turf jobs. While there were several options, one company seemed to rise above the rest...Rock 'N Block. Based on the reviews, plus info I read on their website, I assumed Rock 'N Block would be out of our price range. I made appointments for both them and a few other competitors to come out and provide estimates. Austin came out and gave his pitch. Although, I'll say, it wasn't really a pitch like what I expected from a used car salesman. It was more what you'd hope, as someone like me who doesn't know much about turf other than the little I had read, to get from the experience. Austin answered my questions. He further educated me. He gave me other things to think about...and things I hadn't thought of...to ask the competitors. Yes, he measured and did the other things you'd expect as well. Before leaving, he gave me the price on the spot, and I was shocked at what it was. While I still wanted to talk to others, just for the comparison, I was pretty sure Rock 'N Block was who I wanted to do business with. In my discussions on the neighborhood Facebook site, I met another former customer who invited us to come see their yard, which was many times larger than ours. They raved about every aspect of Rock 'N Block, from the top down. From sales, through installation. Their yard, which has the same natural turf we were looking at, was gorgeous. Within a week, we had confirmed what we thought a week earlier. Yes, price was important, but it was also the quality of the turf, what we thought would be best for our dog, and what we thought would be best for us. Add in the reputation and support of the company, and it was easy for us. Originally, installation was supposed to take place today, but with heavy rain forecast, they pivoted on Monday and did the installation yesterday. The crew showed up on time and, after a brief chat with me, they went about their work. Mario, the project manager who came out last week for another measure and to make sure he had his sketch and the order correct, was the first one onsite yesterday morning. I was told it'd be a one-day job, and as it turns out, they were in and out in around five hours. Our backyard is gorgeous...maybe even better than what we had hoped. And our dog likes it too. The team was friendly, courteous, and definitely experts at their craft. While there was a big mess in both the front and back of the house when they started and during the day, by the time they were gone, you'd never know anyone was there. Everything was pristine, and we had a lush green backyard once again. Mario was originally coming back today for the final walkthrough and signoff. However, Travis, the owner of the company, was actually the one to come by. It's clear he cares about the customers he serves, and it's obvious his views on doing whatever he can to make sure every job is right is passed down to his team. I cannot recommend Rock 'N Block enough. This is the way a business should be run. If you're considering turf, you owe it to yourself to consider Rock 'N Block for the job.

We hired Mendoza Brothers in 2023 to redo our front and backyard landscaping and irrigation. Based…read moreon what happened afterward, I would not hire them again and would not recommend them. The most serious issue was the grading of our front yard. After the project, water collected near the house rather than draining away. A timber-edged planting bed they installed also impeded drainage. After our basement flooded, both our general contractor and an engineer inspected the property and identified the grading as a major contributor to the problem. We later had a second flooding event when a major irrigation fitting they had built failed and released a large amount of water into the yard. When another contractor later rebuilt portions of the irrigation and drainage systems, they found additional problems, including sprinkler heads that had been buried while still connected rather than properly removed or capped. The backyard work was also disappointing. The sod they installed ultimately died, we were later told there had not been enough topsoil beneath it, and the yard was left uneven. We ultimately spent tens of thousands of dollars repairing water damage and correcting drainage, irrigation, landscaping, and basement issues. I cannot fairly attribute every dollar of that expense to Mendoza Brothers because multiple factors were involved. But their work created or contributed to several of the problems we had to spend substantial money correcting. I do not write this lightly. In our case, problems with grading and irrigation became serious problems for our house. I would not use Mendoza Brothers again.

Admittedly, the only thing that gave me any pause was that he doesn't have many reviews- don't let that deter you!! Nick gave us an incredible design and worked with us to revise and phase it out for budget purposes. We completed phase 1 of the work with him this spring (deck demo and paver patio install) and it was absolutely seamless. From tweaking design to picking materials, Nick was always accessible and a great communicator. His crew worked quickly and efficiently and we are SO thrilled with our new outdoor space. We'll be calling Nick again next year to tackle the rest of our project! Cannot recommend him highly enough.

Many aspects of the project fell short, and if you don't want to read any further, my recommendation is to look elsewhere for your landscaping needs. Pros -Very solid design work, our backyard originally looked great and the design is much more functional and private. Cons -Patio: the subcontractor ran short on concrete and I witnessed them pulling what was left from the pump lines and a catch tray to complete the project. The result is a portion of our patio that has incorrect drainage/pooling, spalling and cracking. -Irrigation: and entirely new system, including valves, was supposed to be installed. None of the valves were replaced and I am now having significant problems that will require a complete replacement of the 20 year old valves. -Plants: Nick assured me that the 7 boxwoods he had planned would hold up to my two male dogs. They were dead within 3 months, replaced under his warranty, and were all dead again the following spring. In researching, it turns out that boxwoods are not tolerant of dog urine whatsoever and something else should have been used. -Fire pit: beautiful centerpiece in our backyard. Unfortunately, it was slammed together at the last minute and the internal structure couldn't support the lava rock. I rebuilt it myself less than 6 months after the project was completed. Lawn: extremely lumpy and uneven, is going to require a bunch of sand and labor to get it where it needs to be. I spoke with Nick many times after our project was completed to address some of these issues (not all were immediately present or known about) and was brushed off and made to feel like I was putting him out...after cutting him a check for $60k. Not only is the value not there, I am now paying a second time for things that weren't done correctly the first time and in some case were borderline fraudulent like the sprinkler valves.

Steve (owner of This & That) was very personable, answered his calls when able, and responded in a timely manner. We received our landscape quote the day after he reviewed our yard. Before we committed to This & That, Steve came out again to discuss changes. Once we signed our agreement with him, Steve continued to be available to receive our calls, texts, and emails and was flexible with design changes. Steve was also very knowledgeable, straightforward, honest, and sincere in his communication. We showed Steve pictures of trees that we liked and he advised that he could get these trees, but also advised that the picture did not reflect how it looks in Colorado. We told him about our HOA requirements, and he explained and put us at ease regarding how he would meet them. Installation was also a great experience. Steve started on Tuesday, said they would wrap up on Monday. They finished early Friday, a full business day early. They absolutely overdelivered and surpassed our expectations. We were also able to make some minor deviations as they worked (made a play area for the kids larger, plant placement, adding additional rock, etc.) Also, while Steve wasn't onsite the entire time, he WAS onsite every day and for most of everyday. When he wasn't here, he was out picking up the material for our project. Thank you, Steve, and crew for the fantastic job!

Teo was able to recycle a lot of material in our back yard to help bring the price around $5k cheaper than the next best offer. Now when the price is that good, some might expect poor work or follow through. That wasn't the case. The job took a bit longer than expected but Teo was great at communicating if he was going to be back in 1-2 days so he could fulfill smaller projects which I was fine with, especially for the price he saved us. After he laid the sod we did have a couple areas die and Teo came back twice to patch the areas of concern and even patched areas we were not concerned about and changed sprinkler heads to make it more efficient for us. Again, when the price is that good some people might expect to pay the contractor and never see them again but that's not the case. Having a company that follows through and comes back to make things "perfect" is all you can ask for, and him working with us to recycle a lot of material and save us $ made it all worth it. The concrete he added in the front also turned out great. Definitely call to get work done by them if you are on a budget and don't want to worry about half asked jobs. I was referred to Daysi, of Leaves, and contacted her by phone call, initially on Saturday 4/12. She texted me that she'd call me back, I waited, then she never did. Then she asked for my address, via text, without any phone call, consult, or explanation, such that I had no idea what she was going to do with my address. Was she scheduling an in-person walk-through? Was she looking up the size of my backyard, using publicly available information, to approximate the size of my backyard lawn to mow? I truly had no idea, given her poor communication. She also never told me her name, initially, forcing me to do all the work in our communication / endless text chat, which I found unbelievably exhausting. The only reason I stayed the course with her, was because she was recommended by a contractor who I highly trust. I continued waiting, patiently, for her to get her act together, then followed up with her, again, on Friday 5/2, given she'd read my texts, then fail to reply, so - yet again - I did her job for her, and asked her her working days/hours, to facilitate a better response from her. She never replied, or answered this question - directly. It started to become abundantly clear she was never going to call me. I returned back to the contractor who I highly trust, and asked him if he could move things forward with her. He did. 3.5-weeks later, we finally scheduled an in-person walk-through for my grass/lawn mowing, and side yard estimate, for Tue 5/6 at noon. Then it rained that day, and she asked about canceling. I have multiple medical issues, so I didn't want to delay any further. I said, I was still up to meet in the rain, if she was, and I politely offered her an umbrella. We discussed my grass mowing, she told me to name the price - which was also surprising & strange, so I asked my boss for his business case / pricing - then shared it with her, to modify for the size of my yard, which she did, and it was a fair price. She told me she'd send me an estimate, with options, for the side yard. I was expecting a normal estimate, I receive, from my normal contractors. An emailed PDF, with options, like I receive from my HVAC, electrician, plumber, for me to consider, then select, then sign, then schedule, then move forward. What I got instead was an incessant, inefficient, random, inconsistent, stream of texts, in a totally disorganized manner, with multiple photos of unlabeled plants, so of which were not according to my request, or even right for the side yard, per our discussion, and my requirements. Worse? We finally scheduled the lawn aeration, fertilizing, re-seeding, and grass mowing for tomorrow, Fri 5/16, from 8-10am, such that I take off work this entire week, to get a ton of home infrastructure projects completed, including this initial lawn mowing, given I don't trust her, so I want to be focused for the first time. I text her to confirm on Monday 5/12, she reads my texts all week - never responding, then less than 12-hours before our scheduled appointment, she comes up with a lie, that allegedly her equipment won't fit through my gate, when she saw both the gate and knows her equipment during our in-person walk-through over 1-week ago. Something is suspicious, and not adding up. If you want to waste 1-month & 3-days, being disrespected - to your face, and having all your free time wasted, contact this "business". She also never listened to me about requesting rock for the side yard, instead of mulch, or answered my questions about pruning the bushes she recommended, and she only gave me two options, none of which were what we discussed in-person, or what I wanted. This was a truly terrible experience, and one of the most unprofessional experiences with someone alleging to be a business, in my entire life, with time I don't have.

However, after a couple of storms, our basement nearly flooded. We knew we were on borrowed time and needed to overhaul the drainage in our front and back yards. We decided to combine this project with landscaping and fencing to create the yard we wanted. We researched many other landscaping firms and did our due diligence. Then, we connected with Amy at Outside Dreams. From our first meeting, it was clear that she knew what she was talking about. She listened to our goals and perspectives and was invested in giving us an outstanding finished product. From that first meeting until the end of our project, she delivered everything she promised. Amy was great to work with from a design perspective and understood our desire to have a fun but low-maintenance yard. One of the things we loved about Outside Dreams was that they are a one-stop shop. We didn't want to coordinate between a fence builder, a sprinkler person, a company that does hard-scaping, a landscaper, and a junk removal company. Instead, Outside Dreams handled all of it for us, which was a huge relief because it ensured smooth coordination, communication, and accountability. The crew from Outside Dreams was unbelievable. They worked so hard, starting by 8:00 every day, and were diligent and meticulous in their work. They were respectful, communicated well with us, and cleaned up the yard every day before leaving. It was the same friendly team every day, and the great communication up and down the organization made the entire process seamless. Their workmanship and work ethic were outstanding, and they had the expertise to do all of the *many* tasks involved. The quality and quantity of materials Outside Dreams used were impressive. They did not skimp on anything, especially the cedar mulch, which they generously applied. The plants and sod they used were top-notch, and everything has grown in beautifully. They built us three raised beds with micro-sprayers, and we are now growing a bumper crop of vegetables! The trellis they designed and built, complete with three beautiful clematis vines, adds a stunning focal point to our yard. They also planted trees and shrubs on a drip line that runs as a station on our sprinklers, ensuring everything gets the right amount of water. Outside Dreams' attention to detail was evident in every aspect of the project. From the careful placement of plants to the meticulous installation of the irrigation system, nothing was overlooked. Their workmanship was outstanding, and the final result exceeded our expectations. Amy and her team were incredibly flexible, accommodating our needs and adjusting as necessary. Their customer service was top-notch, always keeping us informed and involved throughout the project. They delivered on every promise and went above and beyond to ensure we were happy with the result. It's hard to explain how much we enjoy spending time in our yard. It looks beautiful, and we are confident that our drainage issues have been resolved. We couldn't be happier with the work done by Outside Dreams.
