I dropped my truck off for them to diagnose a problem I suspected was a timing chain issue. Tony called me back and informed me that I did need a new timing chain kit and it would cost ~$2300 (parts/labor, less sales tax and "shop incidentals"). I decided to get a second opinion from another mechanic and when I picked up the truck, Tony charged me $65 for the diagnostics. I asked him if he had performed any diagnostics on the truck and he said no. They just listened to the truck and agreed with my assessment. I told him that his "diagnostics" fee was unfair since he had done nothing to confirm the problem. He simply pointed to the sign on the wall ($65 shop fee). I told him I would never use his shop again and he said "I'm glad". That afternoon, I stopped by another shop. The lead mechanic listened to the engine and said, "Well, I can't confirm it's a bad timing chain unless I briefly run the engine without the serpentine belt in place." I agreed for him to proceed and his diagnosis confirmed the timing chain was ok. The water pump pulley was bad (making noise). He quoted me $750 to replace the pump (parts/labor).. In Summary, Lowery's Automotive (with Tony calling the shots) did NOTHING to confirm the engine problem and were prepared to charge me over $2300 for a timing chain I did not need. We've all heard the stories of mechanics/shops charging for work that's not necessary. Well, I experienced it firsthand and I'm lucky I did not allow Tony's gang to work on my truck.
