Towed my car in for what I feared was major engine repair. Mike charged me a very reasonable $90 or so to run a pressure test to diagnose the problem (which he kindly offered to deduct from the bill should I get the necessary engine replacement). Mike's "beside manner" is beyond excellent - he spent nearly 30 minutes over 2 calls kindly and patiently explaining in detail what happened, what my options are, and what he might recommend I do. I'd gladly take my car to Authorized again for any major repairs that require deep mechanical expertise. Mike inspires confidence. read more

These are my guys! I've been going here for 5 years now for all my general needs. Mike always gets me in quickly and makes it easy for me to drop off and pick up my car. They always do great work, and will happily suggest another good shop if there's something they don't do (tires, body work). It's so comforting to be able to try on a mechanic you can trust. About a month ago my car's oil pressure light came on, the engine got really noisy, and accelerating become very difficult. I checked online for suggestions on what it could be, but got no definitive answer (ideas included the fuel pump or switch), so I took it to Authorized Motor Service based on strong online reviews. The gentleman I spoke to about it was very friendly, and I paid the $75 ($70?) they charge for a diagnostic. I was then told that the engine was definitely done for (the car is an '02 but has less than 70K miles on it) and that he would look around and see the cheapest option for getting the car back in working order. That option, I was told the next day, was a used engine with far more miles on it than mine, and it would cost $1,700. I don't have that kind of money to just drop, so I took the car back and started pondering my next move, until a friend who's a retired mechanic heard about the situation and suggested I run an engine flush, then do an oil change with decent oil and put in a new oil filter. The person who suggested this to me never once saw the car, just was told about the symptoms. I followed his advice, paying in the range of $40 (and mind you, none of those steps was exactly advanced auto mechanics to do). Well, three weeks later, I have been driving it without a problem almost daily, including 4-5 trips a week from South Philly to Vineland, NJ and one weekend in Brigantine, NJ. I don't know if Authorized Motor Service's failure to suggest this cheap, simple solution in lieu of a $1,700 one came out of greed and deceit or just a failure to consider it (again, the guy was very likable and seemed sincere, so I guess I'm hoping it was the later?), but either way, it has certainly turned me off from considering this place for future work. I just wish I'd been told to try the painfully simple solution before I shelled out the $75 for the unnecessary diagnostic, since even that was nearly double the cost of fixing it. read more

Being new to Philly and knowing how important a *good* mechanic is, I will take ALL of my business to Authorized from now on. I registered on Yelp just to review this place and talk about how fantastic it is. Here's why: On the way home from school, my car started making this horrible noise and had no power whatsoever. I limped back home, squealing the whole way. Since I didn't know any decent mechanics, I decided I'd take it to the VW dealer in Ardmore. I *know* dealers overcharge, but I figured they would at least be able to tell me what was wrong. They did. One of my spark plugs had stripped the threads in its cylinder, so it no longer stayed in the hole. They told me they tried to fix it, couldn't and that I would need a whole new cylinder, for $5000. After picking my jaw up off the floor, I called my mechanic back home to find out his opinion. He told me I should find someone to try a Helicoil, which will slide into the cylinder and make new threads for the spark plug. Using Yelp, I called 11st Auto, who said they didn't do Helicoils but that I should call Authorized Motor Service. And I did. Amy was *fantastic*! She's great to talk to, very friendly, and also agreed the $5000 from the dealer was ridiculous. She put me on with Mike, on of the mechanics, and he told me about the process and that he would have to take a look at it, but he should have no problem fixing it. So I dropped it off overnight, because I couldn't get it there before they closed. The next morning, as soon as they opened, Amy called me just to let me know they got the car. That's it. The whole reason she called was just to let me know my car was safe. How awesome is that? And then she kept me updated constantly, apologized because she had forgotten about a morning meeting and so Mike wouldn't be able to get to it as early as she thought. Not a big deal at all, but it was nice of her to call and let me know. My car was fixed that same day, they kept it overnight to make sure everything dried properly, took it out for a test drive the next day and then called me (again, first thing in the morning) to let me know it was ready. Best part is the final charge was 10% of the dealer's quote. I'll take that any day of the week. I've been going to my mechanic back home for years, and I trust him explicitly. After this experience, for as long as I'm in Philly I will take my car to Authorized Motor Service. Great people, great service, just a great place to go for something no one wants to have to do. read more

I really like these guys I originally went here because I needed a Motor in my 2002 Chevy box truck it is very hard to find someone to do the job both for the size of the truck and the time it takes. A bay with a truck sitting is not making the shop money they where quick with the motor swap and very honest about what you might or should replace. Amazing service and friendly people. I had an issue that needed to be looked at. Made an appointment with Amy who is super nice and explained everything to me. The owner called me during the week to ask about the issue. His son, Mike, was great when I brought in my car during one Saturday. Mike went over all the issues and possible costs. 2/3/15 I had the pleasure of meeting Amy, Jerry and some of the other staff at Authorized Motor Service Inc. when my transmission needed to be replaced. Although the company that sold me my extended warranty for my 2000 Dodge Intrepid was giving me some outrageous demands that they wanted to take place before they paid anything, Jerry and Amy went to bat for me. And although I ended up cancelling my policy with that warranty company before it was too late, I still ended up saving a lot of money by paying only half of what the transmission would have cost. Amy is the BEST, because she moved heaven and earth to make this happen for me, and she also surprised me by having it replaced ahead of schedule. You can't beat service like that. It is so reassuring to know that in today's society, there are still small business out there that are all about customer service and satisfaction, and not what they can get out of you. First I have to say thank you to everyone at Authorized Motor Service.They got me my truck back to me in three days. Here i was thinking i would be weeks before I had it. They will have my business from now on. Was getting the run around from another mechanic, they couldnt even tell me what was wrong. Googled and found Authorized Motor Service, spoke to amy, she said to send it down. That way we could figure out what was wrong. I didn't know that was for sure. Got it down to her, she calle me as soon as the truck came in on the tow truck. The diagnostic was my engine was gone. They got a reman engine the next day, the following day, my truck was done. They were professional, honest, got my vehicle back to me quickly. All the things I want in a mechanic. They truly value the customer. read more

I was referred to Authorized by another mechanic who didn't have the expertise (or tools/time) to repair my car. That was two years ago and I've been coming to him ever since. Mike is an incredibly nice guy and is honest. I'll keep coming to him in the future. read more

My regular mechanic told me I had some spark plugs seized in the engine block and recommended me to Authorized Motor. Took my Mustang there on Friday right before close. The owner and receptionist gave me the run down of the problem, how they were going to fix it and what the cost would be and the "worst case possible" cost if they had problems with removing the spark plugs (they are made of ceramic and tend to break off). The car was done the next Monday. For having almost 120,000 miles it runs like new! Highly recommended place. read more

Sadly, my 1999 Jeep Cherokee Classic began to overheat, the problem being a rusted block. My mechanic offered a used motor as a solution. When I asked about taking it to Authorized motors, he warned me that they might be a little expensive. Boy, am I glad that I didn't listen to him. Personally, I think he was trying to get my money. The guys at Authorized couldn't have been more professional. They really know their stuff. Mike and his dad must have over 70 years of experience between them. All I can say is that you get what you pay for and what I got was a new lease on life for my Jeep. They installed a rebuilt engine with a 100,000 mile warranty and the confidence that if I have any problems, they are there to help me. I've had occasion to consult with them about other issues with my Jeep and friends engines and they have always been right on with their diagnosis and suggestions. I've tried other local mechanics for engine problems, few are even willing to tackle issues like timing belts, head gaskets, piston jobs or rebuilds. I haven't been to every shop in town (though a friend took her car to Sigismondi, and I can't say enough bad things about these ripoff artists) ,but it seems that major engine work it is not part of their usual service and I would be highly suspicious of their abilities. I can safely recommend that anyone who cares about their car and needs engine work go to Authorized with one caveat, if you are a bargain hunter and are looking for a cheap mechanic, don't waste your time or theirs.
