I said that I wouldn't give a bad review, but I've got to warn other authors about this company... I cannot begin to say how frustrating my experience has been with Authorhouse. They are a print-on-demand publisher, hence, you are paying them a lot of money to create your book, market your book, and send THE CORRECT INFORMATION to the Copyright Office to receive an LOC # for your book. First issue, it was a paranormal romance that some of their staff found religiously offensive, so let my book, which they had already been paid to design, sit in their inbox for months...no return phone calls, no return emails until I called and asked to speak to whoever their supervisor was. I had to switch contacts 3 times before the head of the Department got a call from me, and gave my book to someone it wouldn't offend. Then, they make the font bigger, to up the page count, which jacks up the price by $4 or $5 a book, and when I resubmit the book (and pay the new fees) with a smaller font to get the price down, they then tell me that they can't change the price. I once again had to speak to the head of the department before it got brought down $2. There were a multitude of other issues, but the final straw was when I discovered that they had permanently screwed up. Once Copyright information has been approved, it is part of the public record, FOREVER and cannot be changed. 1. They used my legal name instead of my pen name. 2. They MISSPELLED my legal name (which should not have been used in the first place!) I would highly recommend CreateSpace.com. It's owned by Amazon.com, you can design your cover and interior yourself, FOR FREE, and it keeps the cost for a 374 page book down to around $6. If you want to use their publishing packages, they are reasonably priced, but I went the free route, love my new book( the second in the series),and sell it through a store on amazon.com for a price of my choosing. Now, I'm taking my first book back from Authorhouse and will use Createspace to design this one as well. read more

hi, I read nearly all comments/evaluations but I'm asking myself:why non of them with thumbs off, propose you a better publisher than Authors house? it's easy yealing at every body when you're not yourself criticisable. I've a book, a painting one, under command on Authors house, they're quiet serios,I'm quiet delighted by their contacts taken regularly. a year ago I pushed them back 'cause I had no money.they didn't insist anymore.now I have the little money they need to process and I took contact again with them by myself.they are not crabs looking after your money; they present a job,it's legitimate to ask money for it.although I myself am not there to earn money but it's fun for me.I get my book done and it's a dream for me to transfere my thurst for Art to youngesters, or to oldesters also.this would be "the" book of my life 'n my passion. I hope everyone be finaly happy in their lives, no matter with AH or without it. read more

AuthorHouse makes many promises to authors but, keeps few.. After they have your money, you are on your own. As an author, I recommend that other authors stay as far away as possible. I had repeated problems during the publishing process and also social media. Although press releases were sent, when I tried to follow-up, first, Authorhouse wouldn't give me the email addresses. Once, I finally received the email addresses, I found they were either sent to "bogus" or other accounts that had nothing to do with books, Many press releases had been sent to general inquiries. There are many other publishers, who are more reputable, ethical, and honest. Please, be warned! read more

I am really upset. I have two books published through this company. I only made a few dollars. And now that I can advertise the books and do my own marketing I can't even find them on their portal. Amazon still has a few books but OMG read more

I switched to Authorhouse five years ago and have seven titles in print. One book is under two seperate titles because it is directed at different audiences. Three books are fiction, three are non fiction. Religious themes are not an issue. Two of my non-fiction books deal with my critcal take on Islam and the Muslim family, and it's relationship with the People of the book, Jews, Pagans, and Christians. The plot of my fiction novels are based on Islam's radical side. Although I ran into some internal friction with someone from a marketing arm of AH, the contents of my books has never been critized by any member of the AH direct staff. Wheather you are publishing a personal biography or the next great fiction novel, AH has numerous plans. AH publishes your book and is there to assist in it's design. AH gives you an opportunity to make resonable correctons to your text and your cover design, at no cost. The end product is your baby, not theirs. Packaging is important and a lack of experience, or a rushed process can mean a poor product. AH publishing time frames are exceptional. When I read complaints about poor quality, lengthy time frames, and high cost, I reflect on my own shortcomings during the publishing process of my first two books. One needs to submit a publish ready manuscript. All companies are in business to make money, not to coddle premia dona authors. Obviously changes will add to the time frame and add to the cost of production. Each of my books is better than the preceeding one. I finally felt I came of age when I received the first hard cover edition of my last book. After I reviewed it, I contacted AH and asked what it would cost to revisit my earlier books. I was sujprised to find that changing covers and subimiting a revised manuscript was not only possible it was affordable. Yes, I'm a fan, and thanks to AH I now consider myself an accopmlished author. Patrick. J. Roelle Mr. Pat read more

I submitted my manuscript to Authorhouse in 11/2018; the response I received in 5/2019 was, "The book initially failed content evaluation because of libel. We need to work on them first in order to pass evaluation and proceed with the next stage." I addressed the libel issues but there were also many things that they wanted me to change that I did not agree with. I reminded them that this is an autobiography. Since they did not want to print the manuscript, I have repeatedly asked for a refund which they have failed to honor. The marketing team called about marketing a book that has not been published. I have called several people on their staff and no one returns call. I have also sent emails with no response. Prior to submitting my manuscript, I was receiving calls monthly; now, I hear from no one. read more

I had an idea for a book in my head for years. Finally I wrote it down. I sent it around to a few traditional publishers, but didn't get any bites, so I decided to self-publish instead. Fortunately I have been able to sell a few copies of my book. AuthorHouse set my up with a website and got me started on Facebook and Twitter and I did the rest. It took quite a lot of work, but I was able to find like-minded readers, who were willing to give my story a look. Fortunately they liked it and word of mouth has helped my reach a bigger and bigger audience. AuthorHouse was a great starting point for me. If you really want to sell books, you have to be willing to put in a lot of your own hard marketing graft, but I chose the AuthorHouse services that best suited me and took it on from there. Choosing self-publishing was the best decision I have made. And AuthorHouse has been a fantastic supporter. read more

One word...Don't!!! I ordered a book published through AuthorHouse by a friend of mine. I placed the order on Dec. 17th. It was a Christmas present for my parents. They still have not received the book, and the money was debited from my account. I have emailed them twice, called once, and no book. The woman on the phone laughed and told me the book had been returned to them. I also never received information of what company was doing the shipping. These people are crooks. They are engaged in fraud and deceit. read more

Problem: Author House is running a scam. And I was suckered. First, they mislead potential customers about the prices of their services. Upon first conversation with their sales rep I was told one price only to have the price changed on the day I called to purchase. Next, and this is where they get you, they have their "process" set up so that you are basically forced/conned into paying additional money. This is how they are doing a classic "bait and switch". The first step in their scam has you speaking with what they are calling "Check in Coordinator" from the sound of this person's title you think that this person is just gathering preliminary material? (Misleading) If you try to ask questions to get a better understanding of what part of the process you are in they deflect, avoid, lie or give vague information. The "Check in Coordinator" is actually the Rep doing the majority of the scam. Really the main objective for this "Check in Coordinator" is to gather enough information that will allow the company to thwart your project so you'll then be FORCED into paying additional monies to have corrections made later on in the process. Which leads directly into the second part of how they effect this scam: WHATEVER you submit to the "Check In Coordinator" is then REARRANGED ( by Author House ) so that the information you have submitted to the "Check in Coordinator" is Egregiously and Severely misrepresented, incorrect, inaccurate, erroneous, flawed, imprecise and done so INTENTIONALLY. AND THIS IS WHERE THE MAJORITY OF THE SCAM TAKES PLACE. Per the contract you sign with Author House AS SOON as you submit ANY information to the "Check in Coordinator" the "Check in Coordinator" then rearranges the material and calls the REARRANGED MATERIAL "NEXT STAGE". As soon as you give them the initial material (rough files not formatted not ready for print) you think your just beginning the process "Check in Coordinator" right? NO. They immediately rearrange that material and then call it "NEXT STAGE". The technical term they use for this stage is called "Ready for Design" AGAIN the title of this stage is MISLEADING and makes you (the customer) think that this is where YOU will get the chance to YOURSELF finalize what you have given them (what you have given them still needs to be formatted) ? NO. NOT ACCORDING TO THEIR CONTRACT. Per their contract they say this: Once the AUTHOR HOUSE REP TERMS what you have INITIALLY provided them (rough files no formatting) THAT is the design phase COMPLETED in their eyes AS FAR AS MONEY IS CONCERNED and you Automatically owe them 75% of what you have paid. AGAIN IT WOULD BE OK IF WHAT THEY TERM NEXT PHASE IS ACTUALLY WHAT YOU PROVIDED THEM BUT IT'S NOT WHAT YOU PROVIDED THEM IT'S THEIR VERSION OF WHAT YOU PROVIDED THEM A MADE UP VERSION. That's it. It's too late you've been suckered. THE NEXT PHASE IN THE SCAM IS THE PART WHERE THEY TRY TO CONCEAL THE SCAM. The way they conceal this scam is by making it a point to tell you that you get to make ONE round of changes. Which is true you do get to (at least attempt) but it doesn't matter what changes you make at that point they have lied about what you have provided them and now you can not recoup your money at this point in the scam. They try to subterfuge THE SCAM AND THE FACTS OUTLINED IN THE CONTRACT by saying "Oh but you get to change stuff still" . Yeah you could submit changes to be made but what if they do the same thing they have already done and disregard the changes you submit just as they have already done? Now you would owe them ADDITIONAL money and they could put your account in collections IF YOU NOW AT THAT POINT DON'T WANT TO PLAY ALONG. During this stage "The Design Phase" you ( the customer) get to " fix " design problems. HOWEVER, they have already taken what you have provided them and blatantly and intentionally changed it. Why would you then trust that additional requests would be accurately reflected AND TAKE A CHANCE AT OWING THEM ADDITIONAL MONEY ? The MANIPULATION of what you provide them IS THE SCAM along with the contractual language that makes THEIR ACTIONS FINAL (not your actions theirs), they have the control in the situation there's nothing you could have done unless you knew what their scam was going into it. It is intentional and they have written their contract speak around this scam. It would be fine if they actually took WHAT YOU PROVIDED them and then charged you 75% but that's not what they do. They change what you give them, you've lost your money and now at that point YOU HAVE TO KEEP GOING IN THE PROCESS TO FIX WHAT 'THEY' HAVE DONE INCORRECTLY OR YOU LOOSE YOUR MONEY THIS IS THE PART THAT MAKES IT A BAIT AND SWITCH THE FRAUDULENT PRODUCT THEY GIVE YOU COMBINED WITH THE PRESSURE AND RESPONSIBILITY THEY PUT ON YOU TO DO WHAT THEY TELL YOU WHICH "COULD" INVOLVE GIVING THEM MORE MONEY. THEY REFUSE to tell you if it will cost money to fix what THEY HAVE DONE, these are NOT corrections that ........ read more

I would definitely warn all writers against getting involved with Authorhouse. They have no business ethics and will take you (and your money) for a ride, and deliver nothing or very little of what is promised. My nightmare started when I contracted with them to publish my Children's Storybook, and paid them their up-front $599 fee. Nothing happened for months. Lots of excuses but no action. Everything I requested was either "Not Available" or "can't be done" or "not Part of the Contract". After fighting with them for three years and dealing with maybe 10 different agents, I finally got some action, and settled on getting what I could out of my investment. I got my PROOF Copy. By the time that happened, I had located another printer who was willing to do it my way, and comply with my every desire (for a price, of course). I immediately contacted Authorhouse and Cancelled my "contract" ordering them to Cease & Desist, Close the Account and that I would NOT be ordering any books from them. That was nearly 10 months ago, and now I find that my book is being distributed, BY Authorhouse on Amazon, Barns & Nobel, and at least 6 other sites, without my authorization!! If they are selling any, I do not know, since I have not received any cheques. Do a search for "authorhouse scam" for more reports. read more

I just got scammed by AuthorHouse and am FURIOUS! This is a total scam, scam SCAM! Please people, don't fall for this. I wanted to write a book (thank God I never submitted a manuscript) and thought they were legit. My fault as I got so excited reading their website, I didn't read the reviews. They "sweet talk" you and will keep doing that. I made arrangement to make payments, so I didn't pay in full (I thank God again). They will LIE LIE LIE, even in comments I see from them on bad reviews. WHAT THEY POST IS A LIE! I was first assigned a male assistant whom I didn't like (he didn't seem to really care). Then one day, I get contacted by another lady telling me she is my new assistant. When I finally told her that I wanted to cancel via email, I got no response. I feel I was conveniently ignored. To make a very long story short, I find that I am NOT due a refund for what I did pay dues to fees and penalties. I arranged to make payments to them and didn't lose much money thankfully. They did NOTHING for me as I never submitted a manuscript to them. They will get you every which way the can. A bunch of con artists and scammers! Negative stars if I could. read more

I beg of you to learn from my ignorance. This company is a scam! Their marketing team engages in fraudulent practices. Their book editors and publishing representatives utilize improper grammar. I reported them to the BBB (Better Business Bureau) of Indiana but they were able to worm their way out of refunding me for fraudulent marketing campaigns. I lost over $8,000.00 from start to finish with this supposedly legitimate publishing company and realized perhaps $35.00 in profit for my poetry book. How they have retained an A+ Rating with the BBB of Indiana is a complete mystery to me! read more

I decided to review all of the publishers I contacted or had an experience with. I'm bored andvdecided to help save lives today. Do not publish with Authorhouse. Out of all of the bad vanity publishers out there like Pagr Publishing, Outskirts, Xlibris and Authorhouse are the worst offenders. I published my first book with Authorhouse more than a decade ago. I had a bad grammatical error in it that I didn't know about. Instead if telling me, they published the book. A reader left a bad review because if the mistake. I went to Authorhouse and asked if I could resubmit the manuscript with corrections. They told me I had to pay them $25 a sentence that was corrected. I told them I couldn't afford thst because the entire book had to be fixed. They didn't care about the readers, just making a profit from me. So I pulled the book off the market. To make matters worse, Authorhouse kept trying to sell it so I had to send a cease and desist. I was really mad. They then did a revamp and I saw that they were selling market packages thst cost up to $12,000, a lot of what was on it, was had no cost associated with it, mostly things publishers do for free. I waited years before publishing again because I couldn't trust the publishing industry. I'm so pleased I'm working with a new Publisher, New Book Authors Publishing. They have been so honest with me about my book, they edited and fixed my mistakes and even asked me to correct a few lines that were not written properly. Please do not publish with Authorhouse. Do your research. read more

Authorhouse used to be a top of the line subsidy publisher that read your material from cover to cover before agreeing to publish it. They would not just publish any piece of garbage, which annoyed many a wannabe author. I've had four books published with AH up until 2011, and I was handled in a very organized fashion. The quality of the service as well as the books was excellent, with few hiccups. One of the criticisms I see here (from Que C.) has to do with printing his/her book with typos. Line editing is the responsibility of the author or writer - never the publisher; unless the publisher agrees to take care of it; and a subsidy publisher never will. And no, Susan C. a subsidy publisher does not take you by the hand and dry your tears every step of the way. I've been in this biz as a writer/playwright/ghostwriter for many moons, and that just ain't the it works. It's a tough business - get use to it, or ply your talents elsewhere. However, compliments notwithstanding, AH always forced the author to charge high prices for their books, because they took the lion's share of the royalties. They have also gotten very sloppy with respect to their sales reporting, due perhaps in part to their outsourcing part of their operation to the Philippines. I know full well that many sales have not been recorded, and paid on. Fortunately for me I have a considerable body of work 'legitimately' published, and, step by step, will be pulling my work with AH and republishing it elsewhere. A company I once highly recommended, especially for beginning authors, now gets a very pronounced 'thumbs down' from me. The only reason I give them two stars is because of the relationship I had with them in the past. read more

Authorhouse publishing is a hot mess. I sent in a manuscript that was proofread already, yet once it was converted to the book, it is literally filled with errors. I was absolutely assured that the book had been proofread and was ready to go, however I was lied to. I only signed off on it bc I was assured it was error free. I am so amazed this place stays in business! If you want to self publish do it with a place that isn't going to lie to you! No stars at all. A rip off bordering on a scam. A company without a heart. Please be careful. If you have any expectations of talking to one person to guide you through the process let that go. You talk to many people, too many and none of them have read your book. It was a stressful, heartbreaking process. Unfortunately, my first experience with a publisher. Money is the driving force behind the company. The experience was awful and costly. Good luck to anyone who is willing to risk working with AuthorHouse. You will need it. read more

AuthorHouse does one thing really well... get's your book published. There are a lot of books that don't appeal to larger, traditional publishers because the market isn't big enough or the topic is controversial or narrow. Self-publishing is the way to go. I didn't have the technical know-how to get the book formatted and distributed so instead of sitting on my manuscript and waiting for a miracle I took matters into my own hands, hired AuthorHouse, and the rest is history. First of all if you are interested self-publishing you need to read Mark Levine's The Fine Print of Self-Publishing. Secondly, don't think for a moment that it's an easy process. It's not. And I think that is true for any publisher (I've used three). Levine's book does not rank AuthorHouse very high. One problem with AuthorHouse is that beyond the initial publishing of a book it gets expensive and the purchased price of the books is also expensive, which can discourage buyers. When I first published with AuthorHouse I went for all the bells and whistles without much success. But my book was also part of the problem. It really wasn't very good. Writers tend to exaggerate the value of their books and writing. You need to keep in mind that there are more than a quarter of a million new books and edition each year in the U.S. (Wikipedia). That's a lot of competition, and many of the writers are very, very good. So I backed off and started using AuthorHouse to get my books in print, not to promote them. If your book is really good, and you've gotten feedback indicating that it is, and if you have the extra money, then pay to promote it. Otherwise, just write your book and publish it, and promote on your own. You must be ready to take control of your book. I selected all the images I wanted for the covers of my books and explained how I wanted them to look. If you're paying the basic price, then don't expect them to spend a lot of time designing your book. I realized early that I had to take responsibility for cover design and make it as easy as possible for the designer to create a cover. I believe the basic fee for publishing a book with AuthorHouse is about $300. That's not a lot of money. People will spend that much on a fancy meal or more for a new set of rims. You can't expect too much for that price. But you can expect to get your book copyrighted, published, and available online with Amazon.com, Barnes and Noble, etc. However, DO NOT treat your book as an investment. It's not. It's a hobby for 99% of writers who publish with self-publishing publishers. Tell yourself that you write because you enjoy writing, not to make a living. Don't go into debt to publish. Don't use your credit card, except for the transaction. I learned that lesson early on. Find out how much you will have to spend to get published. Save up that much and an extra two or three hundred dollars for unexpected expenses. Proof and reproof your book during the wait. Pay with a card (it's fast and easy, checks get mislaid). Then pay off the debt. Expect mistakes. You must carefully proof anything and everything the technicians do on your book. Yeah, they misspell words or get something wrong. But it's your job to proof what they do. You can make corrections in your text. Sometimes there are technical glitches such as those resulting from the change from one format to another, but you must carefully proof the newly formatted document. For example, if you have chapters with page numbers, the page numbers can change. But if the errors are the fault of AuthorHouse, there's no charge for correcting those errors. Making corrections can be expensive though, so get the book right before submitting it. Have a couple good readers read it. However, it's possible to resubmit the text of your book for about $300. I find that very fair and have done it a number of times because I've often rewritten parts of a book and that's the least expensive way to make those changes. AuthorHouse's staff is much better now than they were ten years ago. The person assigned to you will do his or her best to help you through the process. But don't expect them to perform miracles. The reality is this: the book is your responsibility, not theirs. And sometimes the person you're working with can become impatient, so live with it and get on with completing the process. But not being in a rush really helps. About AuthorHouse not accepting religiously offensive material--I haven't found that to be true. My books certainly fall into the category of being critical of certain religions. Indiana may be a religiously conservative state, and maybe everyone at AuthorHouse are churchgoers (probably not), but that doesn't influence what AuthorHouse publishes. Certainly, it won't publish books that violate libel laws or encourage criminal acts. That's true for all publishers. So is AuthorHouse the best publisher for you? I don't know. I do know that there are publishers that offer advantages that AuthorHouse doesn't, lower cost, for example. Get Levine's book (which I'm not promoting). That's a good first start. But most of all don't expect it to be easy and be patient. And if you're on fire to write and get published, you'll have what it takes to deal with the headaches. I might have given AuthorHouse an extra star, but I felt the overall rating was unfairly low. read more

Aurhorhouse pubished my book several years ago. Today I got an email from them about their new "pitchfest" event and that was the last straw. I felt compelled to warn everyone getting involved with them to be very cautious. I fell for the pitchfest scam then, but not again. They promise that Hollywood moguls are there to listen to you pitch your book and perhaps your book would be considered for the "big screen." What I found was that after spending thousands of dollars on this event only to realize it's a total scam. People eke out money they can barely afford because of promises built on something which is so dear to them, which of course is their valued book, and so they are vulnerable. There are no Hollywood producers who come to this event. You sit through several lectures. At the end of the weekend you get to pitch your book. But what I realized was that I was pitching to what seemed to be college kids barely interested in what I was saying. Hollywood producers? What a joke. I met no one who impressed me as a CEO in any way whatsoever. read more

No, no, no. Have a look at this for guidance on providers on Alliance of Independent Authors: http://selfpublishingadvice.org/allis-self-publishing-service-directory/self-publishing-service-reviews/ My sorryass decision to sign with them had cost me £337.50. No cooling off period, see: Author House UK charges a hefty penalty of £105 fee, or 10% of the entire deal, whichever is the greater (£289 in my case) for 0-90 days cancellation for contracts where no materials have even been submitted. I changed my mind witting a couple of hours and still had to buy my way out... Which covers the things They Don't Tell You, but there are also Things They (plain) Lie About. No time to list right now, suffice to say I'm now engaging the Ombudsmen Services for having been sold a contract based on misrepresentation, as well as well as misleading and aggressive practice. Have tried to contact & discuss with AH UK, btw, but it's like talking to a bunch of robots with a collll.lective. softwa.re. m. m. m. alfunction. The lesson, dear reader/indie author: if the Powers That Be gave you the gift of talent, then they also gave you plenty enough admin/business savvy to take it out into the world. I wrote a review and somehow it disappeared, so allow me to reiterate. I would never recommend Authorhouse to anyone interested in self-publishing. There are some good people there, but in the end I received a shipment of books, 80% of which were useless to me because there were scuff marks all over the covers. After weeks of arguing with AH I got a new shipment and it was worse than the original. I sent a sample book back and of course I got the answer I expected. 'The books are just fine.' They couldn't care less about the quality of the finished product. I've published 3 books with them, but never again. I hope this review doesn't somehow mysteriously disappear. If it does I'll just keep putting it back in. There are plenty of far batter choices in self-publishing. Good luck. mfstout read more

Having previously published 5 books with McGraw Hill and Princeton University Press, I am not a novice in working with publishing houses. However, dealing with Authorhouse with my 6th book was by far my most frustrating, unproductive and disappointing interaction with a publishing company. After 6-months of exchanges with their incompetent, inexperienced, confused, and mismanaged personnel, I filed a claim in Multnomah County, Oregon Circuit Court and won a judgment against Authorhouse. On October 11, 2012 (Case # 120023259S) I was awarded a full refund of my monies, plus a fine and 9% interest levied against Authorhouse. After three months, they still refuse to pay the judgment against them. Now I am pursuing collections litigation against Authorhouse at their Bloomington, Indiana headquarters. The following is a recap of my Oregon court complaint against Authorhouse: 1. Authorhouse grossly misrepresented its technical capabilities and abilities of its personnel to produce a work product in a timely fashion and of acceptable quality. 2. Authorhouse staff repeatedly ignored directives and instructions given by Author. 3. Authorhouse repeatedly failed in its attempts to create a working document from a PDF-formatted manuscript provided by Author. During the period of contract negotiations, Authorhouse made false claims and representations that a PDF-formatted manuscript provided by the Author would greatly enhance their ability to produce a book in a timely fashion and that would reduce the likelihood of errors. When, in fact, Author did provide Authorhouse with a manuscript in PDF-format, Authorhouse staff was incapable of utilizing a manuscript delivered in this fashion. 4. Authorhouse reneged on its commitment to allow Author to establish the retail price of the book. 5. The paperback version of the book produce by Authorhouse in May 2012 contained hundreds of print-quality flaws, rendering a work product unacceptable to Author. 6. Authorhouse failed to produce a hardcopy version of the book with a cover that was of acceptable quality. 7. Authorhouse failed to produce an e-version of the book. AuthorHouse has stolen from me. I paid them $4,000 in late November to edit my manuscript, and until this day they have not delivered anything. I filed a claim for credit with American Express, but the company responded that I had violated their cancellation policy. In other words, they claim that I cancelled a contract just because I was trying to get my money back because they did not do anything! Can someone tell me what are my choices at this point? Can they get away with keeping my money without delivering any services? Is this not blatant theft? I appreciate any help that you can give me by writing me at ovidio@ifapan.com Thanks O.E. I would not pay this company to produce an 8th grade year book. If you are an author or an artist, don't even think about using them. They are so far below any standard of a professional company that I cannot believe they are still in business. Do not use them, you will regret it. read more

Author House Publications is a terrible publication to work with, and that was my biggest mistake this far. I called today to ask about my check and percentage I'm getting back from it, which they should've told me from the beginning, and I'm not even getting half back of what I put into my own damn book. I advise all of you to be careful of who you work with nowadays, ask questions, as many as possible! read more

I must admit, I was disheartened when I saw the list of terrible reviews because I was already mid contract with them. Fortunately, my experience was going great. It started wonderful and ended spectacularly! My first connection was with Scott Hensley, he's tops! Then as things progressed, I was passed on to the next arena with Frannie, she's amazing! And then there was epic Nova! The entire team was cool and each department I worked with truly excelled in the area of communication. They were totally on the ball, returning emails and phone calls and always reiterating what I said in order to confirm everything. I was really intimidated & ignorant about all the legalities of the contract and I felt like an idiot always having to bring it up, but every time I did, they were patient and understanding with me and even friendly having to re-explain it in layman's terms so that I could actually comprehend it to my satisfaction. At first I misunderstood the package that I purchased. I thought they were going to edit my manuscript and I really didn't want them to. It turned out that having them edit is an add on service, so I was relieved that wasn't part of mine. There was only one time I didn't receive a call back when I thought I would. It was after multiple issues, on my end, with lousy reception. We played phone tag a few times and then I never heard from him again, despite leaving several messages asking him to get back to me to confirm if we were finished communicating. I believe his name was Lester from the marketing department. However, another marketing rep, Michael Grady contacted me and he's awesome. AuthorHouse encourages authors to promote themselves, which is all fine and good, but I'm NOT A SOCIAL MEDIA KINDA GAL, besides, I used a pseudonym, so even if I used social media, I didn't think I'd be able to promote the book as mine due to it being about childhood abuse. However, they said that was all resolved since it passed content evaluation for libelous content and it was up to me to keep my identity a secret. In an effort to follow their advice, I did start a host of social media thingy's to promote it, but, it's really a chore and I'd rather shut them down and do things a bit differently. For now, they'll remain until I make up my mind. I designed business cards and bookmarks (on vistaprint) that match the book and I'll use those; the bookmarks as gifts for the purchaser and the business cards to spread the word. Alas, my book arrived and I was a little worried that it would look unappealing, be marked up or damaged (since that happened to another individual), but to my surprise, it couldn't have looked better. The damn thing looks so awesome, it practically sells itself! I requested that 2 photos be combined as one for the cover and they did a fabulous job!! I would absolutely recommend AuthorHouse and would definitely use them again, in fact, I'm already working on book 2 of the trilogy I plan to do with them. The most important thing I've learned through my experience is to make sure each step is understood before proceeding to the next. Even if they have to explain something a million different ways to best clarify, so be it! And be aware of what's included in the package purchased. The way I see it, this process is a partnership, a team effort; together we succeed or together we fail. I wish I could help all of those who had lousy experiences with AH. May you all find exactly what you're looking for in a publishing company and may all your writing dreams come true. Sincerely, Flower read more

I would not recommend this company for book publishing based upon my recent experience. Although the salesman was very friendly and attentive he cost me money in the end due to his incompetence, inexperience (I guess) and ineptitude. I ended going to blurb to have my book published. At first I liked AuthorHouse because I got an actual person on the phone. But I should have seen the signs when I realized that he didn't speak English properly and didn't know how to write properly ( when he started sending me emails). In most cases this would probably be no big deal but I was dealing with a publisher!! I should have seen this is a red flag. Anyway - he offered me a very good price on self-publishing so I took it. As soon as my check cleared I received the contract with the submission guidelines and I immediately realized that they did not print the size or format I wanted. He knew this all along. I had actually sent him page spreads from the book! I realized they were the wrong publisher for me but the contract said that they would keep $150 as a 'set up fee' and return the rest of my money. I'm not sure what they had to set up! It was nothing. Anyway, his ineptitude cost me $ 150! His mistake not mine. Why should I pay for it? Anyway, I would not recommend this publishing house. read more

I used AuthorHouse to publish my first book. The editing was terrible. I have tried now for days to order copies of my own book. I have written my first book "Submariner Tales Truth or Fiction You Decide" and it is now published. The first thing you need to decide is who to publish with I had narrowed it down to three and AuthorHouse was by far the best in price and quality. You can pay less but do you want an inferior product. They helped me through the process and went above and beyond to help me.If you have a good book it will always be a good book. If you have a great book use the best and receive the service and quality you deserve. My second book is in the editors hands and I know I have nothing to worry about. Dean S. Lewis read more

Why did Yelp delete this review? It is both factual and deals with two specific interactions with Author House. From the outset, let me say I have very mixed emotions about AuthorHouse. I have now published two books with them, both works of fiction. Books published by AuthorHouse are priced according to their pages, nothing else. The novel I published in 2012 was nearly 800 pages and got hit with a $37 price tag for the hardbound copy. My 2013 book was only about 288 pages and the HB was priced around $27. While your books may appear on Amazon, Google, Barnes & Noble and in e-book format, including Nook, Kindle and iTunes, don't expect to go walking through Wal-Mart, Sam's Club or Costco one day and find your book nestled in with others for sale. These chains and other bookstores refuse to deal with Author House. Neither will you find your book at a Barnes & Noble store, so you can forget local 'meet the author and get an autograph' types of events. Any customer of AuthorHouse needs to be warned they farm out most of their designer graphics and post-publication marketing to the Philippines. For my first dust jacket cover, I submitted my own design, which the Filipino group promptly discarded and designed their own. This group also took liberties and re-designed the interior of both books without asking permission. Once you receive your proof copies back, this takes precious time to rectify. The Philippines group was such a disaster with my first book in 2012 that I made it clear in 2013 they were not to touch any part of my second book. Their concept of English grammar is horrible, plus the group shuts down operations frequently for religious holidays and things like typhoons and floods in Manila. I asked their supervisor last year a question about the design of my book and after 10 days, she never replied. Accordingly, I "fired" them and told AuthorHouse only an American design crew was to work on my book from that point forward. This year, from the beginning, I told AuthorHouse no one in the Philippines was to touch my second book. In spite of this, they still assigned the book to the graphics unit in the Philippines! Also note, marketing services at AuthorHouse cost extra and are assigned to....the Philippines. Want to advertise your book in the NY Times Sunday Book Review, get ready to shell out at least $4,500 or more. Expect their Filipino group to call you around dinner time or early evening with their sales pitches, as they have zero concept of the time difference. All pictures used in your book, with the exception of the front dust jacket cover, will be rendered in black & white. You get 10 freebie pictures with your book, but will have to pay for extras over the limit. AuthorHouse's graphics group maintains all pictures submitted must have a resolution of 300 DPI. They are very quick to remind you if your photos or illustrations aren't 300 DPI, they will not be held responsible for the poor quality of the pictures, thus you have to sign a waiver. If you're a copy and paste person as I am, you have no idea if your picture is 300DPI but I don't like being threatened with crappy quality pictures or forced to sign any type of waver. AuthorHouse will, of course, for an ADDED fee, fix your pictures and render them in 300 DPI. A word to the wise is find someone beforehand with PhotoShop and let them change your pictures into 300 DPI before submitting them with your book. All clients are assigned numerous project managers, each in a different department. If there's a problem with your manuscript, expect them to be slow in responding, if not actually trying to avoid your calls. My main project manager this year, Tim F., stuck to a regimen of returning calls only once a day, even if then. He was also absent a lot from work as well. My book printing project manager, Sherman W., was even more adept at ignoring phone calls and email requests. If you want something beyond the realm of "normal," AuthorHouse requires you to sign a waiver, not just any waiver, but THEIR waiver. Depending upon the book program you choose, you will receive xx "free" hardback and xx "free" paperback copies of your book, but the minor catch is you have to pay for the postage on the books. This year Sherman W was about to charge me $42 in postage, until I told him that was the amount I was charged last year for my 800 page books! He quickly retreated and re-calculated, coming up with a fee of just over $20. Had I not caught this, Author House would have pocketed an extra $22. To make matters worse, last week the printer screwed up the mailing label on my "free" copies and mailed them to an address in New Jersey, not Houston, Texas! read more

I spent a decade thinking about writing my book and then two years actually writing and editing my manuscript. I obviously wanted to make sure the final product was worth all the hard work and time I put into it. I made sure I looked at a range of self-publishers and compared their services to make sure I choose the right one for my book. I had a very specific look and style I wanted to create. I eventually settled on AuthorHouse based on their publishing packages and the good conversation I had with one of their publishing consultants over the phone. I'm glad that I did because the final book that was produced is exactly what I was looking for. I was able to work closely with the AuthorHouse artists and they really got my concept. I was also surprised, after having taken me so long to get my manuscript ready for publishing, at how quick the process was. I think it was less than three months. Now I am looking forward to marketing my book as I have had great initial feedback from my friends and relatives (but they would like it, wouldn't they?). read more

I have always wanted to write a book since I was a kid. What stopped me was the fear that my book would never get published. Recently a friend of mine told me about self-publishing. I had never heard of it before, but what an amazing opportunity self-publishing offers writers! Just before this year's Superbowl I heard a radio interview with Dan Pastorini talking about his new book. I found out that he self-published his book through Authorhouse. Well Dan is a hero of mine, so if Authorhouse is good enough for him, it's good enough for me. I have seen Authorhouse has published a few athletes I am a fan of (Henry Rono and Mark Crear). That's good news because my book is about sports stars (wish I was a sports star myself!). Anyway, I have called this publishing consultant and everything is very interesting. I wasn't sure which publishing package to choose, but I was given some very good advice and the consultant I spoke to was very friendly and courteous. I am now going through the packages to decide which one is best for my book. read more

Scam/fraudsters have sucked $16,000+ from my 84 year old father. He sold his annuity to pay. They keep calling and now these con artists want my dad to send him $1000 more for marketing material he can print at Office Depot for $25-$50. I have hired a lawyer and am sending a cease and desist letter. This is predatory and exploitation. Stay away from this company. They will not help you sell your book. Name of my father's book: "Men Coming Home From Work...Late." Galen Hobbs is the author. The cover and publishing is fine. The ongoing fees for marketing are outrageous. Example: A big conference of book buyers/sellers and he needs to be in the catalog. Cost: $5000, to be in a catalog of thousands of other writers. He would be a grain of sand in a huge beach. Stay away from them. My name is Stephen Hobbs and you are welcome to contact me. Authorhouse: Please sue me so I can counter sue you. We have evidence of you exploitation and scam. I want to get back the money you stole from my father. Note: All the reviews are 1 star. read more

Customer Service for this company is very shady. They are very nice and friendly at first. Once you purchase your publishing package they become very sneaky and try to up sell you on overly priced items. Their editing services is very expensive when you can have an outside company do it for much less. They have a service called "Author Learning Center" that is unnecessary and simple not needed but they harass u to try it to make extra money. After telling me that it would be free for one year I finally signed up for it. I made sure to ask them if it would automatically renew and they insisted that it wouldn't. After the year was over I realized that they automatically charged me for another year without my consent. When I called to complain they said the charge was not refundable and directed me to the "terms and conditions" page of their website. I am very disappointed with this company and advise other authors to seek another publishing company that is more affordable and has better reviews. read more

What you have to realize is that Author House is not a mainstream publisher but what is called a Vanity Press. They prey on hopeful authors who want their books published and will take any publication for the money and simply print it as is. Their next step is to convince you that it can be so much better if you would just pay for proofreading, editing, artwork, etc. The truth is your book or other publication will be seen by many and purchased by very, very few. If you want to see "your name in lights" so to speak, then get it published and pay the big bucks but expect zero out of it. If you believe this will make you an author and you will make your return on investment, it is 99.99% doubtful and you will be very disappointed as you read the comments on this site and others. Reminder that this is a "vanity press" and in my opinion should come with a mandatory caveat that your publication has a near-zero chance of you making your money back. Hope this helps. read more

This company is ridiculous. They harbor criminals. If you do a wikipedia search on them, you can find one such case; but I warn you, there are many more that haven't gone the lawsuit route. This company prints a very poorly written book with my name on it and issues a check to my SSN and name, then sends it to a psycho to forge my signature on and avoid informing social security of income. They have been informed of it and I've sent documents to them to prove my identity. They will do nothing--not even give me copies of the forged checks that are issued to MY name and SSN so I can report it to the police. At this point, they are criminals along with the psycho who wrote this book. read more
