Venues occasionally change, but currently the performances take place at the First Presbyterian Church in Santa Monica near the Promenade. The location makes it convenient to tag on dinner plans, etc. What sets Jacaranda's programming apart from most intimate music series is its dedication to modern and contemporary music. A glance through the 2012-13 line-up includes a who's who of 20th-century composers - Debussy, Britten, Schoenberg, Stravinsky, Copland - and many who are still alive and kicking - John Adams, Philip Glass, Steve Reich, Esa-Pekka Salonen... The concert I attended recently featured Messiaen solo organ works in the first half, deftly performed by Mark Alan Hilt, followed a solo organ piece by Sofia Gubaidulina, a solo cello piece by Henri Dutilleux (a marvelous, virtuosic performance from Timothy Loo), and a grand finale West Coast premiere of another Gubaidulina work, this time with organ, trombones, trumpets, cellos, violins, and a double bass. It was clamorous and celebratory. I would argue that if you're not usually "into" classical music, then these are precisely the concerts you should attend. You may not find the music "beautiful" but you will certainly take notice and react. Whether you laugh, cover your ears, or raise your eyebrows in scorn, you'll find yourself engaged and, before you know it, "into" the sounds. The venue of the First Pres Santa Monica makes for a more intimate experience than, say, Disney Concert Hall. You're much closer to the musicians and your fellow audience members. A nice touch from the Jacaranda volunteers is the complimentary coffee and cookies during intermission.

Intrigued, I told Allison that we were out of quinoa and I'd be back from Whole Foods in half-an-hour. I then made a beeline to The Kitty. A few qualifiers, here. 1. I generally do not like instrumental bands, 2. I often find the music produced by wicked smart, "Mensa-musicians" to be inaccessible, and 3. Over the years, I have been exposed to a wide variety of hallucinogenic drugs. I ordered a bloody mary and sat down at the bar next to Lucky. For those of you unfamiliar with Lucky, she is intelligent, hilariously funny, and extremely easy on the eyes, so the night was already off to a great start. Then the music started. After a minute, I wandered away from Lucky (the smart, funny, hot chic) to get a better view of the band. That last sentence says it all. For the next couple of hours, I was transfixed, transmuted, and transported. The band was channelling a hall-of-fame full of musicians and composers - Dick Dale, The Doors, Sergio Leone, Yes, The Specials, Zappa, just to name a few. The band-mates wove their individual masterpieces together so intricately, like a textile made from the silk of the orb-weaver spider, that the result was like listening to one beautifully impossible instrument. And here's the best part: Despite the fact that each member is godlike in the mastery of their craft, their music is accessible to a guy like me. There is zero pretense with these guys. They are to "Cinematic punk jazz surf instrumental" what Neil deGrasse Tyson is to astrophysics. Let me break it down a bit: BASS While the band played, my mind was constantly filled with yet-to-be-written Quentin Tarantino films and Bass-player, Marc Doten, was definitely the Michael Madsen character. Relaxed, cool and solid, he lays down bass lines like butter, then on a turn, I suddenly saw him strangling the notes out of the neck of his axe. His face was completely calm as his left hand did the dirty work. It reminded me of the murder at the lake scene in "At Close Range" http://movieclips.com/vrtkX-at-close-range-movie-murder-in-the-lake/ DRUMS During his solos, Drummer, Joe Berardi, is so frenetic, fast and precise, it looks as if he is using his drum sticks to successfully knock unconscious a hive of bees - one bee at a time. GUITARS During one song, Marcus Watkins ' guitar (more notes-per-second than I have ever seen and he makes it look easy) and Paul Lacques' lap steel were engaged in a "conversation" such that I HEARD voices. This is not hyperbole. I actually heard lyrics being sung, particularly by Lacques' lap steel. I was about to say something about it to the woman sitting to my right, but when I previewed my question in my own head (as schizophrenics are won to do) , "Hey, do you hear voices, right now?" I knew how it would sound. I was tripping balls without the benefit of hallucinogens or a spirit guide. SEE THIS BAND. Thank you, guys, for an amazing evening and thank you, Lucky, for the heads-up.
