Troutman Cafe is all about the good... and friendly too.

We chose a table near a window, much to our liking. It was surprisingly not too busy for a late Sunday morning. They have a sizable breakfast menu. Our food came quick and we were served together; you'd be surprised how many places don't understand this basic concept. I appreciate that they know how to time orders to come out simultaneously. Breakfast was breakfast, though their home fries are pretty good. I'll have to order them for myself next time. One thing that threw me off was our waitress asking if we'd like to leave a tip, and what amount. I understand the way they currently utilize Square POS may require the amount entry upon payment, but it was just awkward and an unpleasant interaction. There is a way that you can set it up to have a separate tipping screen upon signature collection. Despite me having more to say about that than anything else, our overall experience was a good one. We will have to come back another time.

Fantastic Sunday brunch with this new restaurant! Waiter was attentive, and great with…read moresuggestions. I came with my husband and two girls, 8 and 5, and my mother. Immediately they brought glasses of water in glasses appropriate for the young kids. I had the cafe du monde coffee which was very sweet but still enjoyable. We started with the beignets, which were like fried croissants. Different but incredibly tasty and the yeasty flavor really shined through. Next, my mom and I had the lobster bisque. So good that my 5 year old gave it a thumbs up! Very creamy and they didn't skimp on the lobster. My girls ordered the chicken and waffles. Waiter then asked us if we preferred tenders, which was very much appreciated. Very thoughtful. One waffle accidentally came back with syrup on the waffle and they immediately made it right. 10/10 for making sure the customer, even the 8 year old, got what they wanted. The adults got the etoufee, the gumbo, and the shrimp and grits. Gumbo with the added seafood had real fried soft shelled crab! A true treat and I helped myself to my mom's plate. My husband ordered the etoufee and he had finished it in just a few minutes. They make a really brown, creamy roux that has a great depth of flavor. I got the shrimp and grits and once again, my 5 year old kept eating off my plate. A bit spicy for her, but great for me. The grits were creamy and the shrimp was perfectly cooked. We ended with the bread pudding. It truly was like eating a custard. It came out hot and steaming, made fresh. Super vanilla flavor, really rich. After all this food, we couldn't finish it, but the waiter made sure to bring fresh spoons to make sure we could all try it. Would definitely return. Can't wait to come back and try more of their seasonal menu.
