When we say things like "I live 12 kilometres from the city", what we're actually saying is that we're 12 kilometres from the General Post Office. The GPO is not only a physical building, it is a measurement tool. Fact.
On another note, I'm one of those outdated folk who consider things like snail mail, pen pals and handwritten letters to be at the height of romantic fancy. You would be likely to find me in a corner scoring my skin with beloved whimsical and worldly words and sticking stamps to myself like bandaids.
The GPO is the only post office in Brisbane that I feel was designed by people who understood the romantic aspects of mail. The GPO was designed by colonial architect Francis Drummond Greville and was built in 1872. Its high arches, its long columns, and its longer corridors all signal a neo- classical influence. The opulence of the building easily accomodates overly romantic ideas concerning dealings with mail.
I like to imagine that back in the day, each letter was treated as a sacred and fragile treasure, to be regarded with singular and utmost importance, to be passed on, gently and swifty through several chains of command until it reached its audience at the other end of the line. In my imaginings, the postal workers were hirsute, wore elegantly tailored suits and had custom made silk gloves designed specifically for mail handling (we wouldn't want to smudge ink would we now?). They also had a musical manner of speech in which....

The GPO, as it exists now, is a post office to the left, and houses very handy specialty stores on the right. You will find the RACQ here for example- very handy people to know indeed. I like to think of it as a utilitarian service centre of sorts. Whatever reason you find yourself going there for, you will be getting something done. read more
