We recently stayed at the AuSable Campground, and I have to say, it was one of the worst experiences I've ever had. We booked Cabins 2 and 6, as those were the only ones available. Cabin 2 had a terrible smell that hit us as soon as we opened the door. It was a mix of mustiness and a perfumy scent that seemed to be an attempt to mask the odor--it was unbearable. We tried airing it out, but the stench was so embedded that nothing helped. Oddly, it seemed slightly better in the mornings, but by late afternoon the smell was back in full force, even with the fan running and windows open all day. To make matters worse, there was visible mold in several areas. This is a serious health hazard, and it was clear that the cabin hadn't been properly maintained for quite some time. Cabin #6 showed some signs of mold, but it did not smell as bad as Cabin #2. Our neighbors in Cabin #5 had it even worse. When they arrived late at night, they found mold all around the cabin and had to have the staff scrub the walls with bleach for over an hour. What a nightmare! Aside from the unbearable conditions of the cabins, there were many other issues. While the bathrooms were clean, most of the stalls did not properly lock. In the women's bathroom, only one stall locked, and in the men's bathroom, half of the stalls didn't lock either. When I approached the staff about the issue, I was politely told that if I was concerned, I should use the bathrooms at the other end of the campground, which apparently had properly locking stalls. On top of that, the staff seemed to pick the most inconvenient times to clean the bathrooms--like right at 8:30 a.m., when a lot of people were trying to brush their teeth or use the toilet after a morning coffee. The pool was a nice addition for the kids, but at only 3 feet deep, many kids scuffed their knees jumping in, not realizing how shallow it was. There is also zero shade around the pool, which makes it very hot for anyone supervising the younger ones. Overall, I'm extremely disappointed with the condition of the cabins and the lack of care from the management. I would not recommend staying here unless they do some serious cleaning and maintenance. We won't be coming back here--if you value your health, I would also recommend not booking a cabin here! read more

After our Hike we came here for the night. We rented a rustic cabin. It was perfect, minimalist but a notch above sleeping on the floor of a tent. The cabin was clean, a double bed and bunk beds a little desk and a couple of chairs. Outside there was a fire ring, picnic table and a food grill ish... Our cabin was perfectly located and was private with the woods surrounding us near by. The bathrooms and common areas were super clean , I didn't take a look at the showers but unlike some campground they are free... wood is available at the store along with some other useful camping things that we ofter forget. Unfortunately we went in Oct with crisp weather so we didn't get to take advantage of the pool or the playground but it looks very nice and well maintained. Im surprised there aren't more negative reviews of this place. I would not recommend staying here. I'll start with cons and end with pros: The staff is superficially friendly but do little to nothing to help if there is an issue and throw up their hands. We rented cabins 2 and 6 and both smelled horribly of some type of strong cleaner that did not dissipate when we opened the windows and doors for the whole time we were there. They said they had never had anyone complain of their cabins smelling and there was nothing they could do. After this, we watched cabin 5 sit on their porch for a few hours after they checked in because they also walked into their cabin with the same horrible smell AND visible mold. The camp staff just treated their cabin with a bleach solution and told them no one had complained of a smell either and there was nothing more they could do. You are kind of stuck if you don't bring a backup tent as the cabins were all rented out and could not be swapped. Bathrooms were clean but they clean them at the most inconvenient times of the day when there is high traffic. Also most doors on the toilets did not properly shut or lock, and they said "well two of them do!" Like, fix the locks, is that so hard to do?? The road that the cabins are on is so washed out and uneven that you have to drive on the grass to avoid bottoming out. The pool water is so murky you cannot see the bottom when you are swimming in it and it is only 3ft deep. The deck of the pool has paint peeling everywhere and there is no shade umbrellas at the pool for anyone hanging there not wanting to swim but are just watching their kids. Please add some shade! You have to pay an extra fee to "lock" your site, which feels like a total fraud. If we reserve and pay in full for a site that we choose, we shouldn't have to pay an additional $20 per site for you to not switch us around at your leisure. You wash your dishes in the laundry room utility sink, which is kind of awkward. And it's super hot and humid in the room if anyone is doing laundry in there. The water is also extremely hot. The town is depressed and there is really no good restaurant options or grocery stores so plan to cook your own food for every meal or travel father for food. Pros: They have a playground that is sufficient for kids. There are lots of biking and hiking trails right off the campground (if you mountain bike, bring your bike!) It's convenient to ausable chasm being across the street. Showers were free (but not labeled so it's confusing as it's just a row of white doors with no labels). If you still plan on renting a cabin here, I heard cabin 3 is relatively new and does not suffer from these specific issues of mold, but who knows! read more

Campground is well maintained, bathroom is clean, convenience store has all the things you need if you forget something and shirts are 12.99 which is cheaper than in the welcome center. Downside when it rains- the place pool with water, soaking your tent, better have an RV or cabin when raining, some trees are dead too make it a little anxious to a camper. But employees are all nice, it maybe a little hassle when they clean the bathroom in the early morning for an hour but definitely a good place to stay as long as no thunderstorms in the forecast. read more

The staff on arrival was very friendly and helpful. The road down was a little uneven as was the sight itself but the sight was decent size and hookups were easily accessible and worked well. Bathrooms at the camp office were clean and in good shape. Showers and bathrooms in the middle of the camp were ok, but the place was quite busy. A nice pool and many hiking/biking trails are available. Overall a pretty good experience. We will comeback if we travel to this area again. read more

I give the campground 5 stars for the place after season. Limited availability of staff on site at the camp ground, FYI. It's a nice campground overall, and very quiet which is what we were looking for, during tourist season I'm sure this place changes a bit. Here's what you don't see in other reviews, the towns surrounding this diamond in the rough are.......well not great, dilapidated and off putting are words you could use to describe Keeseville and Peru. There are liquor stores in town that sell wine and liquor and there are a couple gas stations and a beer place that sells beer. There are no actual grocery stores unless you drive to Plattsburgh, which isn't far, and there are a family dollar and dollar general right next to each other on the other side of town aka Keeseville. All the restaurants are pretty much closed, what I cannot figure out is if they shut down because of covid or because it's the end of tourist season? Or they were shut down long before any of covid? All the hotels and motels and seasonal stay places look like they have been ravaged by drug use/hoarders/vandals. If I was to come back to the Ausable Chasm, I wouldn't stay in this are, I would head into the mountains like Lake Placid area and camp up this way and drive down to the Chasm. read more

I love this place and always stay here. It's a once a year trip for me I won't miss no matter what. The bathrooms are clean, I've done tenting along with the cabins. Everything is always top notch, the shop has all the essentials, there's a game room for kids, an in ground pool and a discount at the chasm right across the street. The"road" into the campground is more like a goat trail, with numerous washouts and uneven rocks and dirt. RV site 8 is so out of level that we couldn't get our Airstream level unless we put 10" of blocking under both axles. And the whole idea of paying a"lock fee" is total BS, especially when we paid for our site, in full, 2 months in advance. The ladies at the front desk and the maintenance guy went out of their way to try and make things right, but the manager, his boss and Campspot are completely incompetent and only care about making money. read more

I went up with some friends. We rented two cabins. For the price it was not so bad but I feel like there could have been more. The website doesn't specify certain things. Such as, what is in the cabin (tv electricity beds sink etc). Being that I've never been there I emailed a ton of questions for answers. I got most of the answers back from a reply a few days later but had to call for the rest. All in all, it's not so bad. We had fun. Some things could be fixed. Such as free coffee rather than paying for a cup you make yourself. Maybe fans in the cabins ( I was smart though and brought my own). Provide some coal for the grills or at least don't charge so much for wood for the fire. And they were out after I paid for it. The staff isn't really customer service friendly. They sit around in the lodge and eat and play on computers and when they do drop off the firewood they aren't very nice about it. At least the one lady wasn't. I'd go back. I would. But maybe it would be my second choice. read more

We ( party of 3) are thankful we only stayed 1 night at this campground. First impressions , the campground entrance and roadways were in poor shape and hard to navigate. The office area was clean. The cabin we stayed in was on the exterior seemed nice enough but the interior was a different story. The beds ( cots) were in unbelievably poor condition, they were torn and ripped dirty, stained with what looked like blood and were really uncomfortable. The beds looked like they were gotten out of a dumpster or on the side of the road. We don't like hotel beds because they are normally like that so we normally stay in cabins because they are in our experience better for comfort and cleanliness. The boxspring was so broken both my wife and I could not sleep in same bed so I got stuck sleeping sitting up in a chair that was also broken and dirty, needless to say I did not sleep. I chose a cabin for our stay because we have never had a bad cabin ( mainly KOA cabins) and they are always clean and comfortable. I have a phobia of bedbugs and germs and I felt awful sleeping at this Campground. We complained to the Manager and he basically laughed ad argued and refused to admit the lack of cleanliness to the dumpster beds they have. We asked for our money back but he refused. We were cheated and it was the most disgusting place we have ever stayed. Everything about our stay was awful and We felt dirty. I would recommend never stay in a Ausable Chasm Campground cabin, sleeping in your car is a wiser choice. read more

We went camping with friends for Memorial Day Weekend 2019. Although I made a mistake with my site number, the staff quickly and cheerfully fixed everything! FRIENDLY and HELPFUL are the words to describe the staff at Ausable Campground. The facilities are immaculate...clean restrooms and showers. If you are traveling with children, the facility has a very nice playground, pool and trails for walking or biking. An added bonus is the admission discount for visiting the Chasm when you stay at the nearby campground. -Happy Campers read more

First night...cabin with a family. Parents slept inside the cabin and let their 4 kids play blasting music in their tent until 1am. 2night night-3rd night not but then Friday came and I thought I was at a Rave around 10:30pm. Nobody around to enforce anything. People drunk, blasting music, screaming and playing volleyball at 11pm. Never again. This place is for people who come to party and not camp. I emailed and called the campground to vocalize and nothing. No return call or email. 600 bucks wasted to not sleep or relax when I could have done that where I came from...Queens NY read more

Our issues are with the facility itself and not necessarily with the staff. We visited The last weekend in August 2017. The first night we camped adjacent to an RV site we shared with family members. The neighbors had tons of friends visiting that were loud and running a remote control car. The car was creating tons of dust and was monopolizibg the vacant area adjacent to our site. The commotion didn't stop until 11pm. We had our 3 and 5 year old children with us, and because of the noise, no one fell asleep until closer to midnight. Exhausted children and parents make for no fun the next day. The next night we stayed in one of the cabins. The cabin next door had a skunk living under it. The skunk walked by our cabin and didn't seemed phased by us, but we were worried about getting sprayed. Our cabin seemed a little dirty, but we all needed rest, so stayed anyway. Everything was generally fine until we went home. About a week after we returned home I started getting bites on my body. Long story short, in Oct. 2017 we confirmed we had bed bugs that we believe we brought home with us from our august trip. We can't guarantee they came from this campground, but we had only traveled here. We generally don't vacation because our kids are young. We made some critical mistakes including using our comforter from home in the cabin, then placing it right back on the bed upon our return. We also placed our luggage on the ground, put it on our bed at home to unload, then put it under the bed for storage. Fast forward to October 2017 where we discovered we had bed bugs in the same luggage we used on this trip, bed bugs in our box spring and in the frame of our bed, and they were spreading. Nearly $1000 later and we're praying that the exterminator has fixed our nightmare. We have bagged up everything from our bedroom including our clothing which still needs to be dealt with. Again, we can't 100% say that the bed bugs came from here, but where else could they have come from since we never go anywhere but work and home? Plus, we made inexperienced traveler mistakes and these cabins have high turnover. If you go and stay in the cabins, check the bottom of the mattresses and don't make the same mistakes we made. Wash and dry everything in hot water upon your return home. In the future, we will not hesitate to report anything. We didn't want to ruffle feathers and had we done so, we probably would have had a much better experience. Lesson learned!!! read more

Only giving one star as the management is not monitoring the Covid safety measures in the bathroom. A huge family group that is occupying the majority of the cabins have not worn masks while using the communal bathrooms and showers. read more
