A classic Punk / Rock n Roll Bar in Toronto CA. Basically the CBGB's of that scene…read more It's been around since the early 1990's and is exactly what a spot like this should be. Very nondescript outside facade - no sign telling you what it is other than a small "BSC" (for Bovine Sex Club) painted near the door. Hard to miss though as the exterior is made up a punk rock style sculpture of rusted bikes & other assorted ephemera. The interior is similar, visually. Great sound system & chill vibes pervade throughout. Weirdly the stage is right in the entrance of the club, on your left, with a long bar along the right side, heading back. Great, crowd, great location in cool area with lots of restaurants & plenty of parking - both on the street up to 2 hours & extended parking for a flat-rate of CA$20 (~$14 USD) from 6:00pm until the next morning, just 2 blacks away.

Are the beer cans running out? It's possible. But, it's a dive in the way of the old dives. And the acoustics for bands are... not great. But they are a sign of what once was. Without attempting to try to present a front of a time long gone, The Bovine simply exists today as it once did in that time long ago, before Smokes stickers, before iPhones, back when people would just go to a bar to talk with those they didn't know the morning prior. Bring cash though, unless you're looking to make some big orders, because credit card is a minimum fifty-dollar spend.

A few more after us got a seat at the bar, and the rest after were turned away They have full bar service. The menu likely has something for everyone, with tacos, flatbreads, apps, and pasta feature. As hubs noted, for a place called uncorked, their wine menu is a bit light. However, if you include liquor choices, it works. Service was good overall, perhaps slightly lacking polish but made up for with genuineness. Live music on Friday and Saturday nights at 7. The trio playing was enjoyable playing a lot of classics most would know. Good music for conversation. The sound system was a bit distorted, so that did detract unintentionally from the band. As far as food goes, they brought the appetizer out after the tacos, and my main seemed to have gotten a bit lost. Ideally the kitchen would have delivered both mains at the same time. So Hubs ate his, then we ate our appetizer...and then I ate my main. Not ideal but pretty tasty. The brussel sprout dish was quite delicious, but a slightly lighter hand on the sauce would improve it. Pulled pork tacos were enjoyed by Hubs. I enjoyed my fish tacos and my duck taco. All in all a good meal.

Prices are not bad and selection is great. I think it hasn't been around a long time, but they're doing something right. Finally met the owner this week, lovely team of people in general. A+ service and ambiance.

He was very personable so it made for an enjoyable experience. I just had the calamari appetizer which was excellent. I was impressed that with the service and the place had a neat vibe to it.

Walking in feels like walking into a SpongeBob set, it's nautical and cheesy and owns it. Jake's knows exactly how silly it looks and it is proud; I kind of love it for that. Comfort-wise it's pretty good, well-spaced out and decorated. I feel I missed out as I feel Jake's atmosphere truly shines during the night-hours as I ate during the mid-day - keep this in mind during the review. The staff was kind and speedy, not much to report in that regard. Not the most memorable experience staff-wise but they got the job done and made me feel appreciated. The menu had the boathouse essentials with seemingly decent prices (in this hell-hole of an economy, at least), however, the price means nothing when looking at the burger. THE BURGER: A Cheeseburger and Fries (~25 bucks) Presentation-wise, it looks fine. Not much to report but this is one of the times where no news IS bad news. Not that it wasn't handled with care but it had no jazz to it. The fries in the deep-fryer basket was a cute touch, however, with the fries providing a nice crunch. The burger itself was smaller than I'd hoped. Give the price point, I'd hoped it would have at least been as big as the bun but it looked like it has a big hat and giant boots. Taste-wise, it got the job done. Nothing phenomenal but the glory of a good burger is amazing regardless. A juicy patty with a great cheese-melt. Handled with love; if only there was more to love. Jake's Boathouse, in my eyes, is an experience that happens to be a restaurant. With great food but disappointing portions, it is not my go-to when I'm in Steeles. HOWEVER. I believe that the experiences and performances must make up for it as people tend to go in large groups. Plus I like fish too so, can't complain.
