It was pretty simple for me to discover this. I just took 12 hours on a Saturday to read every online list and poll of best U.S. ice creameries, placed them all in an Excel spreadsheet, and averaged their Google, Yelp, and TripAdvisor crowd-sources ratings. And the Icecream Factory came out on top! So naturally, I had to make the seven-hour pilgrimage from Nashville, Tennessee, to Greensboro just to see for myself. And yes, I get it. When I visited, they had 66 flavors!! And 12 of those are dairy free. Going with my favorite, the classic mint chip, the ice cream quality was evident! Having eaten ice cream in all 50 states, I've had maybe two scoops of ice cream in my lifetime that were better. And that's saying something. But here's what puts the Icecream Factory over the top! Creativity! The selection is massive. The plant-based and oat-based options are significant. They have very clever dishes like ice cream tacos, ice cream boats including banana splits, stackers (kind of like a sundae on steroids), loaded shakes, ice cream nachos using waffle cone chips, brownies, bars, and over 50 free toppings! I dipped my scoop of mint chip in chocolate sprinkles and that took it to a whole new level!! Confession: It was so good, I went back to the counter for an encore performance. But my stomach can't handle too much dairy. So I went with an ice cream taco using their oat-based Biscoff bliss ice cream, a hard butterscotch shell, and their coconut-based whipped cream, all that sprinkled with crumbled Biscoff cookies and an entire Biscoff cookie intact. What a masterpiece!! Yes, even if you're lactose intolerant, you CAN have your ice cream and eat it too! The two young ladies working that day were very friendly and helpful. And the atmosphere is clean and trendy with great music as well. I highly recommend America's best ice creamery!! Chalk up another five-star review for the champions!

Their peanut butter cup flavor hit the spot for me. A seasonal raspberry truffle didn't quite; the raspberry flavor was strong, but there were some ice crystals and overall textural unevenness and the chocolate truffles were not present in sufficient numbers for my liking. There is also a store which houses a small amount of produce and other fresh and preserved items, as well as a deli counter with some prepared food. I didn't find a ton of interest outside of the ice cream I came for.

Let me start by saying I was REALLY excited to try this place as I've heard good things about it. I am normally not compelled to write a review on food, but this was so disgusting I felt the need to warn people. The wait staff (if you could call them that) is AWFUL, rude & disorganized...offered our table about 5 different foods that weren't ours b/c they had no idea what table it went to. The bad food started with microwaved onion rings...yes I said microwaved...outside was soft...inside was mush. Very apparent they were not cooked in hot oil, or even to order, just a little zap in the microwave. Every ounce of food served is straight out of a can, or a package...the attempt to cover the awful, metallic taste of canned pizza sauce consisted of piling at least 2 pounds of mozzarella cheese on top (not kidding) Steak and cheese sub consisted of steak ums anyone could buy from the grocery store...no seasoning to help camoflauge the awful lack of flavor...obviously also cooked in the microwave as it was barely even warmed. The only positive element is they do serve some very limited varieties of beers...which apparently does the trick into making some folks think their food tastes good. For anyone to think their food is good you either have to have lived in a hole, be unable to cook OR be drunk. On a scale of 1 -10 it was a ZERO. Absolutely DISGUSTING! Waste of money....save yourself and eat in Danville, Roxboro, or even at Hardee's in Yanceyville. read more

This place is terrible all around. The food was average and the service is the worst I have experienced in a long time! Two of the people in our party have a nut allergy and we clearly stated that when we placed an order for ice cream sundaes. We confirmed this with our server several times before she left to put our order in. She rudely said that she had it noted and walked away. Well, when we received the sundaes, they had nuts on them! When I brought this to the server's attention, she just gave us a uncaring "sorry" and did not offer to bring one without nuts. As we paid our tab, I told the cashier about our issue with the nuts and she just shrugged it off too. Obviously, no one there cares about the well being of the customers. They also charge a fee for using a debit or credit card which I will also report to the correct agency. Stay far away from this place! read more

One of the WORST restaurants I have ever been to. The service was terrible, the wait staff were belittling to me and the woman I was with, making me think they are a sexist establishment. Great Pizza! Loads of meat and cheese! If your hunger isn't satisfied when you leave it your own fault. Beer on tap at a small bar. Friendliest staff you will find! All this in a historic store. Worth a stop when passing through or when visiting nearby Virginia International Raceway. read more

We sat outside and enjoyed the scenery. It is a beautiful location right next to the River District. There's a lovely park, splash pad, and playground right along the Dan River. But when we were done, I did not like how she presented me the check. She just quickly flashed me an amount on a screen, and then hid the screen. The burger meat in each was shaped perfectly and was as hard as a hockey puck. They appeared to be cooked medium but the meat was tough and gristly. I have no idea how they got all the burgers the exact, uniform hockey puck shape. They must be like those frozen ones you can get at Costco. But $17.95 for a frozen hockey puck? At one point, while my kids were telling me how gross the patties were, while my husband and I told them they had to eat them to go play on the playground, I flagged the server down and asked what type of meat it was. She said beef. However, it did not taste like beef. Thank goodness for all the toppings because if they were plain burgers, they would have been inedible. We were so hungry though so we ate what we could. Notably, the buns also tasted cheap like they had just come out of a stale grocery store deli bag. The seasoned fries, sweet potato fries, the homemade ranch and ketchup, and salad with homemade vinaigrette were ok. After we left, I added up what we ordered again and realized she must have charged me an extra $12 to swap out a veggie patty for a beef patty. I was not told there would be an upcharge so felt a little swindled, especially with how she presented the check. I wish I had kept the veggie patty though, because it probably would have been better. Also my kid who had said the burgers were so gross puked right after we left and immediately felt much better and enjoyed 2 hours on the playground. My other kid was jealous of the other one puking. Like you can't make this kind of stuff up. This spot has so much potential. I would honestly hope to visit again just to chill outside but would not ever eat the burgers.
