I dreaded the idea of sitting for 8 hrs. in a defensive driving class. I expected to feel shame…read more(for having to be there) and bored. Instead, I found in Mr. Smalley's class to be an environment that was neither condemning nor boring. It was instead engaging, informative, convicting (without the condemnation) and convincing. Mr. Smalley went beyond lecturing about rules and regulations, but explained the logic, reasoning, commonsense and even science behind the rules of the road. And he offered practical advice about best practices in driving. I came away from the class not only thinking that I should be a more better driver, but also that I COULD BE. Mr. Smalley's class included attention-grabbing and jarring videos that made clear the risks for myself and others of not being conscientious and intentional when driving. Though they showed horrific scenes, the videos were not gratuitous horror. They were warnings of how risky driving can be if one is not CAREFUL (i.e. full of care) and reminders of the preciousness of life. Smalley obviously has a teacher's heart and skill. And his honest sharing of personal driving challenges exposed his motivativations for running the class. His motives to provide service, inspiration, and encouragement for the safety of all were apparent. I could go on, but I'll stop and conclude by stating that A1 Defensive Driving School is worthy of the highest possible rating.

I had low expectations. But the class was actually excellent, and although I have been driving for…read morealmost 70 years, I learned more than a few things that will improve my driving. Steve Smalley takes a pretty dry subject, interjects humor, sprinkles in many pertinent personal anecdotes, and the recipe keeps the entire class engaged for the whole day. Nearly everyone is taking the class because they have to, and it's a pleasant surprise to come away feeling that I got more than my money's worth.

Terrible service and overpriced. This was an overpriced and really miserable experience. I asked about this and they did not even respond. Scheduling was then a nightmare for the Behind the Wheel portion with no . The instruction seemed very lax with no confidence building. Once my son reached his last lesson and test, we ran into a scheduling conflict and were told they do not re-schedule. We paid a lot of money and scheduled during a pandemic and there was no way to reschedule a final lesson and test? Additionally, they were extremely rude, my son didn't seem to learn much (they never even did any interstate driving), and the cost is much higher than other driving schools. Zero helpfulness or even a shred of compassion with our situation to try to reschedule. We now have to retake (and repay) for the entire course elsewhere. Do yourself a favor and choose a different company. They seem to just be going through the motions and taking people's money without any care for families or students.

I have found the staff to be rude and difficult. The owner was rude and impatient with me and my son. Would not recommend. Too bad there are so few choices. Albemarle Driving School is much more student driver focused and positively supportive of young drivers. Call Tom at Albemarle Driving School first.
