A big thumbs up for my first VR experience. We took a group of 6 here and the team running this place were rock stars letting us know what to do. We played for 30 minutes which in hind site was not enough. It took us a while to figure out the controllers if that makes sense. Here are some tips. Let people know your name. We picked names like 'hero' which was cute but no one knew who I was until we were all screaming at each other our game names and forgetting Arrive a few minutes early so you get your full 30 min or whatever. There are disclaimers you sign. Etc. Listen to the rules and tips. In several games I was several minutes in before I figured out why I could not teleport or something. I should have listened better. It was fun though. My nephew had his birthday party here and said it was good. I would come here again. read more

Soooo fun!!!. Took my boyfriend here as a fun activity for his birthday. This was both of our first time, so we weren't sure what to expect. Well this exceeded my expectations. Not only was this so fun, I feel like I had a workout. So many game selections. We played Creed (of course I won by TKO) and Sunshine Arizona (Zombies). We had a 2 hour play pass and I wish it was even longer. If you have not tried this out, you really are missing out on a great time. Came here as a surprise birthday activity for someone who wanted to try out virtual reality. As soon as we walked in, we were ushered into our area (as long as you book an appointment and complete the waivers online ahead of time). I booked two people for 70 min each. The staff was very helpful and super into describing how things work and throughout the experience. The walls are padded for the possibility that you walk into them, which I did a couple times. You have a staff member also warn you if you're going to hit the wall or even the person you came with, which I also did. As for the game selection, there are popular games such as Among Us and the light saber to music. We asked for suggestions since there were so many options. Some you can play alone or some you can tag team with or play against the people you came with. In our 70 min session, we probably played 5 games, trying out a full round for each game. I suggest Battle Magic for the Harry Potter/wizard fans out there (don't forget to look up, down, and behind you!). Even if you're not into virtual reality or playing video games, I'm sure it would be interesting to watch as a spectator as you can see what the players are seeing on a TV. They have some light refreshments available for purchase. Merchandise is also available for purchase in a wide variety of sizes. Transactions were almost completely touchless. You can pay with the card used to book or you can pay with another method. I suggest wearing something comfortable as some games will have you bend and move around. If you have a longer session, wearing comfortable shoes as you will be standing a lot. You may experience a little dizziness during and after if you're not used to immersive experiences since it really is a whole world you're in. The best VR experience you'll ever have as a group! The staff as a group did a great job getting us hyped and managing our time and got us in some games we really enjoyed. HEADS UP: We went as a group and swapped on our stations. We asked when we could swap and they abided. Just be aware that they have multiple groups in the building, so you decide when you want to swap and they take care of the rest. I did hear another group complaining that some of them didn't get enough time (they were also really late for their session) but they relied on the staff to ask them to swap. That's not their responsibility. They handled everything with top professionalism. read more

This was our third visit, but first time at the new location. We had the most fun this time around. Devin was our host - and let me tell you - WE ACTUALLY APPLAUDED AFTER HE WALKED THROUGH THE INSTRUCTIONS ON HOW TO USE THE CONTROLLERS!!! That's how into it he was. He was theatrical, he was enthusiastic, and we knew we were in for a treat. The games did not disappoint. Devin stayed engaged with us through the entire experience, and we were all intermittently laughing in delight, shrieking in surprise, gasping at breathtaking 3D scenery, screaming in fright, and exhaling heavy sighs of relief. It was a roller coaster of emotion. Our legs felt like jelly after we were done. We had so much fun, and the time flew by. Highly highly recommended. Go for the full hour if you can. It's worth it. The game selection is good and the staff is very friendly, yet professional. Hosted a birthday party for our 10 yo recently with 11 kids total and everyone enjoyed themselves. We did have a younger child that was not accustomed to VR and so his interest waned quickly (30 minutes of play; we booked 110 minutes total) but was entertained by watching the other kids play. This was an amazing experience that I would recommend for adults, kids, and families! We were in town for a short vacation and our 9-year-old noticed the Augmentality Lab while on a morning walk with his dad. We booked a 30-minute session for the entire family for Friday night (Mom, Dad, and 15, 13, and 9-year-old sons). Our host, Devon, got us hooked up and started right away after a quick intro to the equipment. I am not a gamer, but even I got the hang of things pretty quickly! Of course, the boys were off to the races like they'd been doing it from birth even though it was their first time. There was non-stop laughter from everyone in our family! The 30 minutes went by so quickly. Fortunately, there wasn't a group after us, so we got to buy another time slot. The kids left us in the dust and went off to kill some zombies in Arizona Sunshine while we nearly exhausted ourselves with Rhythmatic and then had a blast with Drunken Barfight (a guilty pleasure if there ever was one)! When it was all over we couldn't stop laughing and telling stories about the fun we had. It was so great, we booked another 30-minute session for Saturday (this time with a Groupon). We would have done more time, but they were booked! We were so happy to see Devon again. I can't say enough wonderful things about him. Not only is he a wonderfully informative and attentive host, but he's also just really an all-around nice guy, and he made our experience that much better. If you are even considering trying out the VR experience, I highly recommend you give Augmentality Labs a try. One word of caution though. When you get into the VR world you have the feeling you are Uma Thurman kicking butt and taking names, but in the real world you look more like Steve Urkel, so make sure to record your friends and family! read more

What a hidden gem! Augmentality Lab is located downtown Durham. It's an AR Lab with immersion games. I went on a Sunday and was able to walk in without wait. My sister and I played 3 games in about 30 minutes -- Creed boxing, a bow and arrow game and a game where you had to dodge toxic fish. It was a lot of fun. I have been to Augmentality Labs a few times now and I can honestly say this place is the bees knees. You don't have to be a video game junkie to like it. There is a game for everyone and the employees are always so gracious in answering questions about each of them. If you're ever in the mood to hit up this place with a few friends, it is conveniently located around the corner from Bull City Burger. Every time we've gone to Augmentality Labs, we've visited Bull City afterward for a dinner. It's become a monthly ritual and I highly recommend you do the same. You won't be disappointed. read more

Rather, it's a fun, affordable way to spend part of your evening. It's different than your average evening so that makes it a mini adventure, and a fun one it is! I took my 10 person team here for a team event that spanned a few hours. Definitely well worth it. A few things I thought were great: - The booking experience on the website was pretty simple. So simple, in fact, I was worried I wasn't doing it right because I didn't need to interact with a human. - The space is great... it definitely has the rehabbed Durham vibe. The upstairs has a bunch of skylights and is very open. Much less cave-like than I thought a VR place might be. - I didn't know you could bring beer (and probably other beverages) but there was a market right around the corner. Would recommend doing this so people who are hanging out while waiting for a station can socialize. Caveat: we did this for a team event so I'm not sure you can bring beverages if you are just walking in by yourself. The VR itself was really well set up. There were a few minor technical glitches but on the whole we had someone there walking us through everything the whole time and every station was well maintained and working great. The games are really awesome when you start playing mulitplayer VR. More tiring than you might expect, though. By the end of a 2 hour session most people were starting to wind down. We had a couple of racing stations included in our package but since they were in their own area, compared to the other 4 stations we had rented, they weren't as well used and I probably wouldn't reserve them again for a group event. 4 stations was definitely enough for ~10 people by the time you factor in people taking breaks and sitting around talking. It was worth going up to 4, though, because of the multiplayer games. I will definitely come back and recommend this place to others who I work with as a great team building event. read more

So ridiculously fun! This was our second visit, first to the new location. Our kids had gift cards and we decided to play along also. Sometimes we played together, sometimes we played solo, everyone had a great time. There are so many different games. My favs were Quiver, Badminton, and the bar fight one (that was a little bit of a guilty pleasure that I can't be proud of but loved so much!) Mike was so helpful with setting us up and then continued to assist us with getting in and out of the games or anything at all. He was also great about making game recommendations and just facilitating the best experience. Two hours flew by. I'm not a gamer at all (kids and hubs are) and I am excited to go back. So fun. Covid-wise, I super appreciated their mask wearing, keeping groups separate, and overall care. Check this place out for sure. read more

Groupons do sometimes show up to get you a break on checking it out, but those deals kill profits for business owners, so if you dig it, think of the owner when you return. What a great new and awesome addition to downtown Durham!!! Particularly for any video gamers out there, I just took my brother here for his birthday (he is a big video game person) and he was ready to move in there and try and get a job here after our 70 minute session, which tells you how great and how addicting this place is. You can book 30 minute sessions or back to back 30 minute sessions which gives you the 10 minute bonus which I think is totally worth it. It isn't super cheap, but they have staff there who guide you through the games, etc. There are cooperative games you can play with friends like killing zombies and ogres and such which were SO fun and then there are individual player games too like Matrix style ones call Hot Shot where you have to virtually move around objects and enemies and such. If those types of games aren't for you there are kid friendly ones too and google earth where you can fly through the world and see famous landmarks and such. So really the world is your oyster here at Augmentality Labs. It is still a work in progress and they have random glitches in the games here and there but the staff here really just want you to have an awesome time gaming out. They have late hours too, so perfect for any time really! Can't wait to go back and try out some other new games too! read more

This was our first trip to Augmentality Labs (AL), and we LOVED it! My wife and I are not video game junkies however, VR experience blew us away. It even helped me figure out that my wife kicks ass in video games (embarrassing yet, somehow, appealing). Our experience began with Kevin (an awesome employee at AL) patiently walking us through the VR gaming process, and ended up with us wanting more of the fun. Kevin, incredibly, extended our fun time (beyond the scheduled block), which left an indelible impression on us. We will definitely be back and bring some more company with us. My family had so much fun. Augmentality has a great selection of games so everyone was able to find something that they wanted to try. The location was easy to find and there is a parking lot directly across the street. The price was very reasonable. I plan to follow them on social media because I see in the past they have offered a lot of promos. I would suggest booking upstairs because everyone has to walk though the downstairs rooms to enter. This place is so much fun! We range from 10-46, video game junkie to 'meh, Candy Crush is cool.' Each of us has found something we like, and the staff is always helpful. They are so patient and knowledgeable. We've booked sessions for date night, and the four Alpha stations on the top floor for a birthday party. You can watch each other play via the monitors, and the top floor has board games and a traditional Nintendo console in the corner for other guests/those taking turns. FYI - You can book a session and split it amongst yourselves. Three of us booked a 70 min. session the first time to try it out and ended up splitting it 20/20/30. read more

My husband and I went to Augmentality a couple of weeks ago and had a blast. They have a decent array of games, including multiplayer. We started with a multiplayer then branched off and played single player for the remainder of the time. The staff are extremely knowledgeable and polite and very helpful. They have TVs above the stations so if they see you struggle with something in your game, they'll comment on what specific hand movements you may need to do or which direction you may need to face, etc. Overall, a really fun experience for most ages.
